Spain's parliament voiced its support on Wednesday for the rights of great apes to life and freedom in what will apparently be the first time any national legislature has called for such rights for non-humans.

Spain's bulls, however, remain in the ring with only the apparent right to show up and be slaughtered. And, in case you missed it, keeping apes in zoos in Spain won't be illegal (even if the ape objects?).

Of course, Spain has no great apes wandering loose so this is a pretty easy thing to do. As I've always heard, with rights come responsibilities. Conferring rights is one thing - making the rights holder accept responsibility for their actions is another. Any suggestions for Spain?

I guess Dr. Zaius will be taking his next vacation on the Casa del Sol.

Anyway, there are the Barbary Apes in Gibraltar. I wonder if this is some preliminary legislation before the Spainish try to take the rock back from the British.
