Wesley Clark demeans McCain’s military service
Posted by: McQ on Sunday, June 29, 2008

Of all the "ex-generals" floating around out there, perhaps the most odious is Wesley Clark. Today he decided it was his place to demean John McCain's military service on Face the Nation:
Gen. Wesley Clark, acting as a surrogate for Barack Obama’s campaign, invoked John McCain’s military service against him in one of the more personal attacks on the Republican presidential nominee this election cycle.

Clark said that McCain lacked the executive experience necessary to be president, calling him “untested and untried” on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” And in saying so, he took a few swipes at McCain’s military service.

“He has been a voice on the Senate Armed Services Committee. And he has traveled all over the world. But he hasn't held executive responsibility. That large squadron in the Navy that he commanded — that wasn't a wartime squadron,” Clark said.
That's just foolishness. A squadron command doesn't become "executive experience" only if the squadron is in a combat situation. It is either an executive experience or it's not executive experience whether at war or during peace.

Does commanding NATO not count as executive experience if NATO isn't at war? And btw, does getting fired from his NATO command negate Clark's claim to executive experience?

And then this:
“I don’t think getting in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to become president.”
Clark's attempt at denigrating and minimizing McCain's service aside, McCain's service is a qualification among many. Say what you will about McCain otherwise, but his service to the country was exemplary.

But here's a question: if the willingness to fight for your country, put your life on the line and suffer the brutality McCain suffered as a POW doesn't make the cut as far as qualifications go, how far below that does a "community organizer" show up on the list of non-qualifications?

Given the bar he set when he explained why he didn’t want public financing, I expect Obama to publicly chastize and get Clark under control...

Wow. So, all the tens of thousands of peacetime officers have just been twiddling their thumbs the whole time.

All that time out in the field is just one big camping trip, huh?

[H]ow far below that does a "community organizer" show up on the list of non-qualifications?

Woah there McQ! We can’t question his sacrifices. That’s not on the list of approved issues that matter to the American people.

Yet in Clark’s mind a junior senator with about a year of unremarkable experience in the US Senate before running for the highest office in the land is somehow "tested and tried"? Yeah, okay... Seems to me that McCain has not only been "tested and tried" but has a resume of experience far superior to his opponent. Btw, I say this as someone who would prefer other candidates but realistic enough to know that we’re stuck with one of these guys. I’ll take the one I think will do the better job and cause the least amount of damage.

Funny, at the 2004 Democrat Convention the General thought that John Kerry’s 3 months on a swiftboat in Vietnam were just the thing to qualify him for President. He also didn’t seem to think that Kerry’s complete lack of anything even resembling executive experience was worth mentioning.

Odd that.

You should read the Nightingale’s Song and you will discover that everything Wes Clark said was true.

McCain is an "expert" at being an admiral’s son, a POW during Vietnam but he NEVER did get the training that would enable him to be competent at foreign policy and national security matters....the things that McCain calls his strong suit. There are Republican Senators and military leaders who "know" John McCain and believe he should not be our commander in chief.

McCain only has one strategy...If you don’t do what I want when I want it he’ll bomb you...His temperment is too unstable to make him able to negotiate diplomatically.

McCain is said to be more like Cheney than Bush.

Buzz...Buzz..

*YAWN* yeah, I guess Rev. Wright instructed Obama in foreign policy, national security, economics and everything else he’s addressing on the campaign trail.

I swear, you people don’t even try very hard anymore.

You would have to know GEN Clark to believe the size of his ego. Trust me.

I’ve written before that I was shocked that he was running for President, because it is such a step down from God.

That sounds remarkably like Sen. Obama’s plan for dealing with Pakistan...

But in that case it’s the Light-Worker’s idea, not McHitler’s, so it’s ok...

And Sen. McCain has at least spent some time in the senate, unlike a certain junior senator from Illinois who hasn’t even served one term yet...

General Wesley Clark McClellan strikes again. The Copperheads’ general.

The fact that he would actually go on a national Sunday news show with this kind of "analysis" speaks more eloquently than anything he could say.

It really makes Obama look like the Chicago Pol he is.

To understand fighter combat in Vietnam, you must realize that in 1968, Hanoi was the most heavily defended city on Earth. It was ringed by overlapping and interlocked SA-2 surface to air missile sites. Although the greater threat was AAA (anti aircraft artillery) McCain was downed by an SA2 and so was I. (I was rescued.)

Here’s what happens. A Fansong radar tracks you, activating your radar homing & warning system. When they launch, hopefully you acquire the missile visually, put it on your wing tip, jam and chaff, dump your nose and select max power. This puts the missile in its most difficult tracking environment and it gives you the kinetic energy to maneuver defensively. If the Guideline missile comes down with you, it’s yours. Here’s the hard part. When it’s "close" you pull up at max G and roll into the missile. If you pull too early, it will make the turn and hit you. If you pull too late, it will detonate its 400 pound warhead and you’ll be in the fireball. If your break is perfect, the missile will depart controlled flight and detonate, but don’t relax, there’s another one right behind it.

McCain was hit inland, ejecting while his A4 was out of control. Ejection from a tumbling fighter yields a low probability of survival. He landed in a lake seriously injured, was beaten and bayonetted and taken as a hostage by the NVA. (None of our servicemen in Vietnam were recognized or treated as POWs.)

Most people have heard the stories about torture, denial of medical care and isolation these men endured. Water boarding it was not. When you see McCain move his arms, you’ll notice a stiffness. This is a result of his captors having tied his hands behind him and hauled them up until he was off the floor, dislocating his shoulders. They would then beat him with truck fan belts. These sessions sometimes lasted for days.

Wesley Clark was wounded in Vietnam and took an early return to the States, a procedure followed by another democrat presidential candidate.

McCain was offered an early release and refused it, holding to the code that prisoners would come home in the order in which they were captured.

I voted for McCain in 2000 and I will vote for him again because he has the integrity, leadership and experience necessary to be President.

I knew Clark when he was a one-star and I know all about that ego - trust me. Clark was the poster boy for those generals David Hackworth called "perfumed princes".

I have only 3 words ...

Remember Pristina airport

I kind of get the feeling that Wes Clark believes those clowns at the link, when he seemingly tried to start WWIII to keep the Russians out.

Why do I get the feeling that this here is about as trustworthy as the "unnamed sources" the New York Times relies so heavily upon? Say what you like about McCain but I’ll stack his resume against Obama’s anyday of the week. Of course, the fact that I am forced to vote for McCain and defend him at the same time I find to be quite irritating since he is not my ideal candidate. Yet I’d rather do so for McCain than that empty suit Obama.

Maybe Mccain should’ve asked the Vietnamese to shoot him in the ass; that seemed to be enough for Kerry.

Kerry had a bigger trick up his sleeve... the schrapnel he caught in the ass was not an enemy’s weapond, but his own.

Whoa!

You guys need to be hosed down. I saw the entire interview with General Clark. He did not dispute Senator McCain’s war record nor degrade it. He simply stated an opinion that his military service does not necessarily lend itself to executive power.

I was in the military and served under many award-winning officers. The majority of them would be a total disaster as politicians. They actually expect to be obeyed without question, immediately, regardless of the consequences. This may be one reason why Sen. McCain has such a temper, he can’t stand not being obeyed.

It’s interesting ... I wonder how many of these comments were as outraged with Senator Kerry’s war record was attacked by charlatans. I doubt very many at all (prove me wrong). All this rubbish about Kerry wounding himself, about him not being entitled to his medals —- is actual rubbish.

Once again we appear to have hypocracy oozing...

Vote Barr. It’s that simple.

Again, those on the right miss the point - probably because it involves thinking. McSame was shot down FIVE times - FIVE TIMES. Two of the planes he stole from the Navy - you heard me - HE STOLE THEM FROM THE NAVY!!!!! Then he crashed them. You may not know this either - because your preferred version of the news comes from limbaugh (that warrior who you support and listen to, he never served either, except in Viagra induced underage girls videos) - but McSame also made propoganda films for the vietcong to use against the US. Does that sound remotely like someone who ’deserves’ the WH? Of course it doesn’t. Besides stealing, then crashing planes McSame has no - NO - experience in any endeavor which requires management. He even had to leave his first wife - ON HER DEATHBED - so he could flock with a younger beer lady. Does that sound like the character you want in your WH? of course it doesn’t.

Face it: McSame is the choice of the nutjobs and the MSM. He has flipped so many times on major issues, he should get a back brace - or maybe we should. Please look beyond the pundits opinions of McSame and think for yourself. I know it is hard to do that, but please try. The progressives know you have been pushed down by Bush for so long, you are probably scared to look out your windows. Your country needs you right now to think and do some research on the candidates. Please don’t just fall inline again because you are frightened and scared. Try to find your courage and let your children see that courage - for they are watching you.

Charlatans..really? So let me echo YOU...PROVE they were charlatans...
Vote Barr. It’s that simple
Vote barr, it’s that simple, IF I wanted simplistic answers to complex questions?

Is Drug Use a "Victimless Crime?" Who should I ask, YOU or the spouse of an addict or the children of the addict or the victims of the addicts crimes?

Is prostitution victimless, more arguably, though the crime of "Human Trafficking" certainly suggests that prostitution can and DOES have victims, doesn’t it?

The Gold Standard...so by adopting Gold as our currency all our econmic problems will be fixed? Or will that also require the abolition of the Federal Reserve?

Come home from the world, EXCEPT for our many profitable overseas ventures...because, and that’s the problem with libertarians, they don’t see GM as an imposition on the world, mayhap because they own stock, but Khobar Towers IS, though in most folks minds, not US libertarian, BOTH GM AND Khobar Towers are US overseas impositions...

Oh yes I’ll be casting my vote for lucky to .1% of the US vote, Bob Barr, especially if he happnes to be handling a pistol near me, in which case I’ll promise to vote for him if he’ll just put it down...BTW, if Bob Barr is so stink’n great why isn’t he still representing the good, hard-working God-Fearing people of GA? Did they learn something we haven’t yet?
Again, those on the right miss the point - probably because it involves thinking. McSame was shot down FIVE times - FIVE TIMES. Two of the planes he stole from the Navy - you heard me - HE STOLE THEM FROM THE NAVY!!!!!
He stole them from the Navy? WOW, I’d have thought that the USN would have had better property accountibility than that...and after the first theft you’d think they’d ahve caught on.

If you’re serious; you’re a nut and if you’re Ott Scerb, WELL DONE, Sir!

McSame is the choice of the nutjobs and the MSM.
Are you for real? Have you watched any MSNBC lately, they are creaming in their jeans for Obama and the rest of MSM is following suit, just not as blatantly.
He has flipped so many times on major issues, he should get a back brace - or maybe we should.
Care to examine how many time Obama has flipped - and many times thrown a long-term associate under the bus in the process. You can start with NAFTA, Iran, Pakistan, Iraq (yes - even Iraq), guns, flag pins, Trinity Church and Reverend Wright, and the list goes on and on and on and on and on and on . . .
Please look beyond the pundits opinions of McSame and think for yourself. I know it is hard to do that, but please try.
Coming from someone who has obviously drunk deep from Obama’s koolaide and you are asking me to think for myself? Why don’t you try it for a change.
The progressives know you have been pushed down by Bush for so long, you are probably scared to look out your winndows.
I voted for Bush before 9/11. I voted for Bush after 9/11. I voted for Bush before, and during Iraq. I would vote for Bush again but there is a little thing called the Constitution which prohibits his running again. (I’m tempted to vote for him anyway as a write-in)
Your country needs you right now to think and do some research on the candidates.
I have - Obama is an empty suit with a blank sheet of paper for a resume. About his greatest achievement is voting "Present" over 130 times in the Illinois Legislature - now that is what I call Leadership! Care is change my opinion. Good - provide me with a list of Obama’s accomplishments. I’ll wait.
Please don’t just fall inline again because you are frightened and scared. Try to find your courage and let your children see that courage - for they are watching you.
I am. That is why I am never going to vote for a political huckster like Obama and am proud to announce it to any and all.
