Frankly I think we’ll live to regret the court’s decision, but then I’m actually proud of the fact that whether or not I like it or agree with it, we are engaged in the pursuit of what is "right", even in a completely unfamiliar set of circumstances. It’s difficult for people to accept the fact that true liberty means the freedom to be wrong. Either as a person or a country. It’s one of the things that makes this country great. The true American spirit, that doesn’t gracefully cotton to being told what to do, is the backbone of that greatness. But it’s the ability to let someone else have the reins for awhile, even as some of us disagree to the core of our being with how that person will drive the team, that makes us a nation of which to be proud. |

Contemporary liberals hate America and anything that is good for her. Nothing new.
Combine that with a mentality that is unable to discriminate between 30 seconds under a water hose to save thousands of innocent lives and 7 years of bone-breaking, dehumanizing torture and captivity in order only to turn the subject into a propaganda weapon, and you’ve got the contemporary liberal media guy. They dogmatically revere the letter of the law, and have lost sight absolutely of what the law was meant to protect in the first place.
They’re like an army of public middle school vice principals. |

Indeed this country has sinned.
Shameful, terrible deeds, from the earliest settlers through to the present day.
Just like every other nation in this world that ever existed.
But the difference, why we damn well celebrate, is that we see where we did wrong, and we fix it goddammit! We try to do better, honestly try, and if we’re wrong today, we’ll damn well be right tomorrow.
Having ideals isn’t about living up to perfection. Nobody (or country) can do tthat ever! That’s where the left gets it all wrong! Having ideals is about trying to live up to them, setting an example for others, and picking yourself up when you fail, and trying to do better.
Not to sound arrogant, but not many countries in this world do that. And fewer countries sacrifice blood and treasure to give other countries a chance to do it as well.
So yes, happy birthday America. I’m proud of you. |

Evidently this guy doesn’t know much about the period in which the Founding Fathers lived, or much about American history in general. By his standards, the Fourth of July should never have been celebrated. |

It’s not liberal and it’s not guilt. It is decent Americans who feel ashamed of what their country has done and has become post 9-11. We, who dearly love this country, are determined to renew it and make it greater than ever. But that requires honesty, intelligence and humility; we’ve had more than enough jingoism, selfishness, and ignorance. It requires America to look in the mirror and see the scars that have made it ugly. Those of you who enabled the defiling of America, and who deny it even now, should just get out of the way. But even if you don’t, the wave will wash right over you. America is better than this.
Happy Fourth of July.

As I recall, we got more or less the same essay last July 4 from Howard Zinn.

"As I recall, we got more or less the same essay last July 4 from Howard Zinn."
Indeed, like the loathsome Sasanach chienne-whining above, these jackasses never saw a dictator they didn’t want to grovel to, just as long as the murderous thug in question was smart enough to wear red instead of brown. Their greatest desire is to turn this country into Zimbabwe, with themselves as the ZANU-PF. |

America is better than this. If that is the way you feel, then show everybody you mean it - Do Not Take The 4th of July Off! Go to work. Ignor the Bar-B-Qs, the fireworks, the family picnics and reunions. Go To Work - If you think this is a travesty of a holiday, then prove it to everyone.
Yeah . . . Right.

Those of you who enabled the defiling of America, and who deny it even now, should just get out of the way. But even if you don’t, the wave will wash right over you. America is better than this. That’s why we live in a great country, because we consistently tolerate fools like YOU Dave. We constantly celebrate your right to be a blithering idiot and say and DO idiotic things.
Question - Shall we just lie down in our graves Dave to get out of your way, or would you settle for our mere disenfranchisement while you and your kind ’repair’ America.
Here’s the best part though, my votes counteract YOURS...don’t count on us getting out of your way anytime soon.
What an AWESOME country we have! Happy Fourth!

But that requires honesty, intelligence and humility; we’ve had more than enough jingoism, selfishness, and ignorance. This country has honesty, intelligence and humility in spades. It’s part of our national character, and what I trust will prevent complete calamity if Obama manages to move into the Oval Office.
As for "jingoism," I defer to Theodore Roosevelt:
"There is much talk about ’jingoism’. If by ’jingoism’ they mean a policy in pursuance of which Americans will with resolution and common sense insist upon our rights being respected by foreign powers, then we are ’jingoes’."
I suppose you’d rather we cower in the face of Islamic extremism post 9/11?
As for "selfishness and ignorance" ... apparently not. It seems to me that many of my compatriots are easily swayed by appeals to their selfishness and ignorance. See also: socialized healthcare. It requires America to look in the mirror and see the scars that have made it ugly. I see the scars, mister. Believe that. I also understand that scars give character, and I don’t believe in cosmetic surgery. Those of you who enabled the defiling of America, and who deny it even now, should just get out of the way. But even if you don’t, the wave will wash right over you. And apparently you don’t understand what makes this country great.
But Happy Fourth of July to you anyway, my wrong-headed fellow citizen! |

I have been hearing this ’ashamed of my country’ stuff for quite a few years now, and while I have never been one of the Love It Or Leave It types I do wonder from time to time just what kind of person prefers to live in such a shameful place when there are so many good, honest, and humble places to live. Sweden is very welcoming to immigrants, Canada has a much better health care system, Great Britain is on the cutting edge of multicultural tolerance, Switzerland has never been an imperial or colonial power, The Netherlands does not persecute harmless drug users and also welcomes refugees. With all these much more morally upright places to live, why on earth would any sophisticated, caring, honest, and humble person want to live in the cr**hole that is the US? |

timactual, I always wonder why they aren’t on innertubes floating from Miami to Havana.
And their shame basically seems to amount to whining that those who don’t feel as they do should listen to them and do as they say. I’m not sure which bunch irritates me more, the Stalinists who call themselves ’Progressives’ or the self-flagellating whiners who insist everyone else join them.
Mostly I think they’re ashamed that they haven’t made more of the opportunity offered them freely in this country. And of course this means they blame someone else. Until they at least balance all those things they regard as shameful with all those that we should be proud of I’m ignoring their idiocy. |

Well, guys, I think in some cases, the psychology runs like this:
"I’ve got it really good here, but I know I’m lazy and have never done any really productive work in my life. There must be something fundamentally wrong with a society that allows a lazy bum like me to live such a good life. So I need to find ways to feel bad about society so I don’t have to face the fact that I’m a lazy bum taking advantage of others." |
