Progressivism isn’t selling well in college
Posted by: McQ on Saturday, July 12, 2008

There was an article the other day saying that the professors who were products of the '60s were beginning to retire from academia. I, personally, couldn't be happier. For institutions which seem to be over-the-top with their concerns about 'diversity', one bit of diversity over which they seem to have little concern has to do with the political ideology of the faculty. In most cases it is "be progressive or be unemployed". Maybe attrition will do what their faux concern about diversity has never been able to do.

Which brings me to this little blurb in today's AJC:
Former faculty at Antioch College, which is temporarily closing amid financial problems, plan to teach in coffee shops, bookstores and parks to keep alive the spirit of the Ohio private school known for offering progressive liberal arts courses while encouraging learning for life, humanitarian acts and collective decision-making. Scott Warren, former associate professor of philosophy and political theory at Antioch, said 22 ex-faculty members have formed the Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute in the village of Yellow Springs, where the college is located.
Apparently "progressive liberal arts courses" aren't selling to well.

"Collective decision-making?" If you run your life by the collective you can be assured of one thing - the collective will run your life.

My guess is Antioch is finally finding out -the hard way- that while these may be fun courses for retired activists (obviously with an outside source of income) and trust-fund kids who won't work seriously in their entire lives, such courses aren't the most sought after by those who actually want to spend their time in college learning how to earn a decent living during the rest of their lives.

So, properly in my opinion, they're presently relegated to coffee shops and parks where, hopefully, they'll all be joined by unicorns under beautiful rainbows as they learn useless nonsense which will only benefit their egos (and build precious "self-esteem").

The professors, however, will certainly be taking their money for the experience without consulting the collective once - what you thought they were doing this for nothing? Where have you been?

Nah, everybody knows unicorns are only attracted to virgins.

There will be plenty of fluffy bunnies and kitties and big-eyed puppies though.

Yeah, but now the cafes and parks aren’t safe.

The ’60s profs are only there in numbers because campus radicals basically ejected their colleagues, often with threats of violence.

These people have *never* stood for academic freedom, freedom of speech or anything of the sort.

Located about 15 miles east of Dayton, Antioch College is known for producing students with a passion for free thinking and social activism. Famous alumni included Coretta Scott King, "Twilight Zone" creator Rod Serling and evolutionary scientist Stephen Jay Gould.

Warren said the Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute has developed a curriculum and plans to begin teaching classes Sept. 4, charging between $1,500 and $2,000 a semester. "The Art of Political Discourse," "Suburbia and Suburban Sprawl" and "Ecological Sustainability in Community Economics" are among the courses.

Antioch College, founded in 1852, doesn’t grade classes, encourages students to develop their own study plans and combines academic learning with experience through a co-op program in which students leave campus to work in various fields. About 200 students were enrolled at Antioch last academic year.

No big loss...

This is a fallacious anecdotal example, since it appears that Antioch has usually had financial trouble throughout its history and doesn’t have a big endowment like the higher-level liberal arts schools do. No doubt regressive totalitarianism is selling well on your tax dollars at public universities.
