Obama is half black, half white. Will he pay reparations to himself? |

And with this speech, Obama truly locks 95% of the minority vote.

Is the RNC or McCain running ads on all of this crap? Is it too early? I live in AL, which is expected to go to McCain by 20%+, so we do not get the ads that run in other states. |

I’m in Illinois, where McCain would be wasting money just by passing thru on his way to someplace he can win...
Like New York. |

My father refused reparations from the German government though he was a Holocaust survivor and his parents murdered in Auschwitz, their business and money expropriated by the Nazis. He emotionally still hated Germany, but refused to make the later generations pay for the sins of the Nazis. He wanted the Nazis to pay, not the ones that came after. He was principled that way. He might have taken money if it could proved it was his family’s, but he would not take a ’payoff’ reparation from the German government.
In the meantime, he came here in 1948. He wasn’t involved in slavery. My mother’s parents came here in the early 1900’s. They never owned slaves, and in fact, I don’t recall them being prejudiced in any way, and would help anyone regardless of creed or color; the criteria they taught me to judge someone by was DEED. How they acted.
So, how does this put the hook of blame on me or my kin, and why should I be forced even indirectly via taxation to pay for the sins against blacks in the days of slavery? Or even the intolerance shown blacks later on? My grandfather had a grocery with black and white customers. He would extend credit to both when they were down. What should his "guilt" consist of? My father was a microbiologist, and one of his two longest-employed lab techs was a then-young black woman, who stayed with him the entire time he worked until he passed away, was like family. Where is his guilt that I and my kids to have to expiate it?
Obama and his ilk are just Randian parasites, pure and simple. There is no kind of justification he and the other whores-after-our-money can possibly bring to the idea of reparations, and this is just about thievery on a scale that would make the Mob envious. |

All my ancestors that were here (USA) prior to the Civil war were Quakers (i.e. abolitionists), that lived in NJ and Ohio.
Can I get an exemption? |

He said as far as reparations were concerned that he was more interested in strategies to lift people up from the legacy of discrimination. Such strategies would include improving inner city schools, so students received a quality education. Shouldn’t all students regardless of background receive a quality education. If you want the government to provide it, should it matter where the school is, or what group of students it serves?
The problem is, Democrats want to pay the same people who are failing to do this now, MORE, so that the teacher unions will support the Democrats. As if simply throwing money at the problem is going to solve it.
I don’t know what’s happened to the education system in this country since I was in high school. I would suggest we’d be better off spending some money now on figuring out what works, then just giving them more money to try more of what’s failing.
In the end I think we’ll find that family involvement in the education of their children is what makes the most difference. And that may be the biggest distinguishing characteristic between students who fail, and students who succeed. And there’s no federal program that’s going to force certain parents to be more involved with their children. |

Keith, a lot of us who went through the ’old’ education system think it worked...I’m talking the one from the late 50’s and 60’s.
That which has ALREADY been demonstrated. |

Hey, lets keep throwing $$$ at the same "old, broken" education system! Because throwing money at it for the last 3+ decades has worked oh so well...
The illogic of it all is staggering.
As is Oliver’s dishonesty (or is that from Soros?) |

To be honest, this isn’t news. The only thing newsworth is this statement is its harder to spin. He’s made remark this extreme in the past. The difference is they were crafted better with their implied meanings the general public might not catch and had better deniability built in.
The frustrating thing is that this was going on months and months ago, but some people were so fixated to see Hillary out of it, they ignored the bigger nut. |

I viewed Hillary as harder to defeat because she’s not going to make stupid statements like this. Obama’s Iraq trip was in fact a disaster. But to the managed perception it was indifferent or a minor success.
He’s the media’s annoited one. None of his remarks will ever be allowed to come back to haunt him.
The Clintons always made stupid statements, too. But one time they were the annoited. |

Oliver seems concerned about the distinction between merely tragic, and unusually tragic.
And in the process, proves he has some problems comprehending the use of italics for emphasis. Nowhere does Instapundit say Obama said the words "unusually tragic". Nowhere do they say parts of our history are not tragic.
It’s a question Ollie, not a quote. Does Obama think WE, in America, have a lock on tragedy, you now, that our history is ’unusually’ tragic. Is our tragedy more tragic than anyone else’s tragedy or do we just qualify for garden variety standard old tragic tragedy.
And I guess that matters to Reynolds, but Obama certainly did use the word tragedy, so he didn’t make it up (speaking of claims of distortion) - I mean, here’s what was said - "I personally would want to see our tragic history, or the tragic elements of our history, acknowledged," the Democratic presidential hopeful said. And I do have to wonder who this pertains to - "There’s no doubt that when it comes to our treatment of Native Americans as well as other persons of color in this country, we’ve got some very sad and difficult things to account for," No, see, I, personally, never ’stole’ land from Native Americans, I, personally, didn’t own slaves, and (for both) neither did my father, or my grandfathers, or my great grandfathers, and how far back do I need to go for this?
So I’m not sure who this ’we’ is that he thinks feels this guilt for crimes they didn’t commit. I have a fair idea who he thinks ought to pay for it though. |

I find it unbelievable that a candidate for President of the United States could briefly mention reparations in a speech and it gets no air time. As a DAR, I’m apparently scr*wed. What will Nobama’s new campaign slogan be? "20 acres for every *ss!" |

As an actual system is set up for reparations, they will have to start deciding who is "black" enough to get them. Are we going to get down to quadroons and octoroons? I doubt it. It will have to be self professed. And if people were smart, everyone would just claim to have a slave ancestor to ruin this scheme. I envisage a Spartacus scene where white people stand up and say "I, too, had a black slave ancestor."
Frankly, the whole AA set up can be gamed the same way. I knew an Italian background guy who got into grad school at UC Berkeley from CSU Fresno by claiming he was Latino. (See, Italians used to speak Latin.) Sure, he was ostracized the first year or so. He also told me his thesis was about how big corporations were destroying their competitors who were local women making traditional medicines in Indonesia. He explained this was a calculated ploy that would guarantee he got his PhD. Makes you wonder how much real academic work is going on at UC Berkeley.

Please recall that you will not get much "minority" support for reparations from the Chinese, Vietnamese, Koreans, Japanese, Mexicans, Asian Indian, Arab, population. Why should they be taxed to pay for slavery? Second, we need to press for him to explain how he will define who gets paid and who gets taxed. Less than 1% of the white population owned slaves. Some 3000 blacks owned slaves. 350,000 Yankee troops died to end slavery. Millions of people migrated to the USA long after slavery. Most of the companies that were involved in slavery have long since gone out of business. So, if you’re the son of a Kenyan black and a white American woman, do you get taxed or paid, Mr OBama? What gives YOU the moral authority to lecture us about this issue? Your black ancestors were not enslaved, and you are as white as black. What you are really proposing is not reparations for slavery, but reparations for being black. What a shame! What other minority needs to be paid to make up for their skin color? NONE. |
