The Lebanese Mouse
Posted by: Lance on Wednesday, July 30, 2008

Is war the enemy of trade? Does trade lessen the chance of war?

Or, despite the uncomfortable implications, does war lead to trade? The experience of Lebanon and Syria war suggests it can, and history is replete with examples, as Lebanon is invading Syria with capital and direct investment.

Lee Garnett delves into the history of similar phenomena, ranging from Bastiat to Lenin:

We might notice in conclusion that Leonard Wibberley's plot device in The Mouse that Roared —where the fictional duchy of Fenwick declares war on the United States, solely to surrender and thereby beneficially trade with it— is actually more often inverted, as it is in Syria. The great lion that attacks the mouse, is often followed home to the lair when he departs. By consequence it shouldn't be so surprising that well over half of the foreign direct investment in London today, comes from lands once conquered and occupied by the British army in the age of Bastiat.

There’s also the War of 1812 from our own history.

Although I wouldn’t say that’s a general trend.

Well, if trade is blocked simply by a disagreement between certain people, kill (their body or their will) those people (through natural or unnatural causes) and trade will ensue ... and i would say most any market inherently wants to trade with any other market.
