Did anybody read some of the comments on yesterday’s Exxon profits stories at the major media websites? They were terribly ignorant, sad really. People really believe that these profits are why gas is so high, not oil prices and not taxes, which far dwarf profits made on gasoiline sales at the pump. This is despite the fact that the oil companies themselves do not operate the vast majority of these pumps, profit margins for Exxon have held steady at under 10%, Exxon’s tax rate is more than 40%, and their total tax bill was several times larger than their profits. No wonder I get a "don’t buy gas from Exxon for a week" email every other day.
