"The least of my brothers"
Posted by: MichaelW on Wednesday, August 20, 2008

When asked about his own failings at the Saddleback Church forum, Barack Obama somehow turned his answer into everyone else's failings:
“Americans’ greatest moral failure in my lifetime,” he said, “has been that we still don’t abide by that basic precept in Matthew that whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me.”
Hmmm ... meet the least of Obama's brothers:
The Italian edition of Vanity Fair said that it had found George Hussein Onyango Obama living in a hut in a ramshackle town of Huruma on the outskirts of Nairobi.

Mr Obama, 26, the youngest of the presidential candidate's half-brothers, spoke for the first time about his life, which could not be more different than that of the Democratic contender.

"No-one knows who I am," he told the magazine, before claiming: "I live here on less than a dollar a month."

[...]

Embarrassed by his penury, he said that he does not does not mention his famous half-brother in conversation.

"If anyone says something about my surname, I say we are not related. I am ashamed," he said.
Okay, let's see. Americans get lectured to about being stingy (which is false) by a man who hasn't done a damned thing for his own flesh and blood. Is this what hopey-changitude is all about? Mind-boggling hypocrisy and selfishness?

For never having really done anything else with his career, Obama sure is a horrible politician.

In this instance, I don’t blame Obama (Barack, that is) one bit.
My father abandoned us when I was a teenager, and started a new family. That was almost thirty five years ago, and it was a long time before I could deal with my father in any way that approached father and son. It took me fifteen years to agree to meet his second wife, and I’ve never met or spoken to either of my two half-brothers, their wives, or their children. In the case of one of them, I never will, because he died a few years ago. And no, I didn’t go to the funeral. I have no intention or motivation to meet or speak with the other stepbrother or other family members ever, although I suppose I’ll see them at my father’s funeral. And this is despite the fact that my father and I did acheive some degree of reconciliation, and despite the fact that everyone involved lives withing twenty miles of each other.

In one sentence, family dysfunction can keep on dysfunctioning for decades afterwards. I’m sure it has in Obama’s case.

I don’t blame him for not taking care of his brother, kishnevi. I can understand the circumstances. What I blame him for is trying to shame all the rest of us with a myth, using words from the Bible ("whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me") to enhance the shaming, while being oblivious (aloof?) to the fact that he fits the description of one who should be ashamed better than most anybody.

It’s one of the beam/mote moments than are so infuriating. Here’s some two-bit politician declaring that we as Americans are not caring enough about our "brothers" when he has done a DAM/\/ thing to help out his actual brother. It really makes Obama seem like a real a$$hole, IMHO.

Another great story is that Obama visited a school in Africa named after him, because the locals were so "proud" of one of their own. Obama showed up, did the usual kiss-the-behind dance, then promised the folks there, in the middle of nowhere, that once he got home and back to the US Senate he would use his power and clout to get them "financial assistance."

What did he get for them? Zip. Zilch. Nada. Bupkiss.

Of course, Obama could use some of the proceeds from his book(s), but then he couldn’t buy that great big house and the extra land from his good buddy occasional friend someone he doesn’t know or remember, Antoin "Tony" Rezko, convicted felon.

Obama seems to be the grandest user I have ever seen. He uses people, finds out they are bad and drops them like dead weight, or promises them things and then forgets they existed, yet someone tells grandeloquent stories about how he really did help them.

Do you know what that is called? BULLCRAP ON A GRAND SCALE.

And this is why, as I predicted in January, John McCain will defeat Barack "Throw Them Under the Bus" Obama to become the 44th President.

Yet for all that giving, we still have people that don’t have access to health care. I think that’s the point. How much we give to Indonesia doesn’t really change the calculus. (if anything, it sharpens the problem: we’re enormously generous with disaster aid, but are comfortable allowing people to go without health care here.)

And yet, anyone can be wheeled into an emergency room and receive life saving medical care, regardless of their ability to pay.

And yet, Medicare and Social Security make up the largest chunk of the Federal budget at 43.5%

Oh, goody—a politician who wants to use the coercive power of the State to bring the rest of the country in line with his religious beliefs. Isn’t this was "liberals" are always criticizing the Religious Right for?

I’ll be the a$$hole.

And yet, I am not disallowing anyone from obtaining healthcare or health insurance. That is their personal responsibility for themselves and their family. Why anyone thinks I should have to pay for someone else, I just do not understand.

Mike;

Let’s try breaking this down a little differently. Since Obama choses to place this argument within the realm of Christin teology, let’s deconstruct it there.

Look; what he says here, on the surface, is quite correct. We are in fact under a scripturally ordained responsibility to reach out and help others. No question.

Where he falls short of the mark, is where he conflates individual acts of charity, with government involvement. Note again where I say we are under a scripturally ordained responsibility… we as individuals….not the government. Not even as one church or another. As individuals. I eman, at what point did Christ say ’governments are the source of charity"? No. Rather Christ himself said:

” Give unto Ceasar that which is Ceasar’s and give unto God, that which is God’s.”

If you break this line of Christ’s down, you see there’s a rather thick line, drawn between charity and government. Confiscation which is what taxes are, is not charity, and it is certainly not the act of an individual. Charity is the realm of God, and the individual….not of government…. And given Obama’s brother’s situation, we see what happens when such is left to government. We see the work of Obama’s ideal.

He’s clearly of the idea that charity involves giving away somebody else’s money, however you have obtained it... and there’s the crux of the issue; he has bent the religion to his own world view, which I view as being on a level plane with Islamo-Facists… who have done precisely the same thing. Jerry Wright, call your office.

Perhaps now we have a clearer understanding of why Obama’s attachment to Wright and his preaching of ;iberation theology is of such great import to Americans.

He also doesn’t even give 10% of his income to charity. Compare Rick Warren, who gives 90%, and Dick Cheney, who gives 75%. I think this is as clear a case of hypocrisy as ever there was.
