It is called "a show of force"
Posted by: McQ on Saturday, August 23, 2008

I told you yesterday about the 3 US ships headed toward the Georgian coast. There is also a Polish warship with them.

Says our friend and spokesman for the Russian military, Gen Nogovitsyn:
'NATO is enhancing its military presence on the Black Sea under the pretext of providing humanitarian aid,' Deputy Chief of Staff Anatoly Nogovitsyn said, according to a report by the Interfax news agency.

'This does not contribute to stability in the region,' the colonel general added.
Yeah, neither does invading a neighbor.

Apparently we're scheduling two more US Navy ships through the straits as well.

And:
Several other NATO naval vessels passed the straits into the Black Sea on Thursday on their way to a naval exercise off the coasts of NATO members Bulgaria and Romania in the western part of the sea.
Just routine training exercises, planned more than a year ago if anyone asks. Two can play the game as is becoming evident.

I wonder, however, if this will cause the Ukraine to feel it can get a little pushier about its Black Sea ports.

Move, counter-move - the nature of "great power" power struggles.

Hopefully, that includes a couple of Los Angeles class subs, which could put the entire Black Sea fleet on the bottom in 4 hours max.

During the 80s, I worked around some sub types. Their term for the Russian fleet was "target-rich environment". I doubt that’s changed. Ask the crew of the Kursk.

I’d be very interested to know the following:

What’s going on at Incirlik? Increased activity?

What are the Turks doing? Have they moved units back to the Georgian border?

Probably not going to get answers to those questions, but when I have some time I think I will google just in general about Turkey-Georgian relations, and how Turkey handled the crisis in Georgia diplomatically.

Transit of the Bosphorus is controlled by the Montreux Convention, which bans passage of aircraft carriers and capital ships http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreux_Convention

This treaty is a way to keep the Russian fleet mainly in the Black Sea, so the United States has no interest in violating it and provoking a dispute with our NATO ally, Turkey, in the process.

The US never signed the Montreux Convention. However, we abide by it volentarly.

The Russians did move an aircraft carrier through the straits, by redefining it as an "aircraft transport" or some other such lie.

Putting a carrier in such a small area is probably not a good idea, anyway.

Right. Next move is the Russian air force starts making high-speed passes over the ships. Then the ships start to light up their targeting radars to discourage it. Then ...etc.

Let us hope the Georgians or other parties don’t complicate the game.
