Plot to Kill Obama?
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Maybe yes, maybe just some white supremacists mouthing off.

Regardless, there is absolutely no place in American politics for this.

4 have been arrested in Denver concerning an alleged plot to assassinate Barack Obama.

A local reporter had an opportunity to speak with Nathan Johnson, one of those arrested.
Nathan Johnson, 32, an associate of Gartrell and Adolph, was also arrested Sunday morning. He told authorities that the two men had "planned to kill Barack Obama at his acceptance speech."

"He don't belong in political office. Blacks don't belong in political office. He ought to be shot," Johnson told Maass.

"Do you think they were really plotting to kill Obama?" Maass asked.

"I don't want to say yes. I don't want to say no," he said.
Of course plotting an assassination and it being a credible threat are two different things. At the moment, at least, the feds are claiming "no credible threat" presently exists:
"We're aware of the matter discussed tonight by the Aurora Police Department," said Colorado U.S. Attorney Troy Eid in a statement late Monday night. "Federal law enforcement is working hand-in-glove with the Aurora Police Department. Because this matter is currently under investigation, there is little we can say right now.

"We can say this: We're absolutely confident there is no credible threat to the candidate, the Democratic National Convention, or the people of Colorado."
I'm not sure how to interpret that, but it seems to be an assurance that there are no other credible threats they know of at the moment. How credible this threat was remains to be seen. However:
Law enforcement sources told Maass that one of the suspects "was directly asked if they had come to Denver to kill Obama. He responded in the affirmative."
As for the white supremacist link - another of those arrested provided that:
Law enforcement sources say [Shawn Robert] Adolph broke an ankle in the fall and was captured moments later. Sources say he had a handcuff ring and was wearing a swastika, and is thought to have ties to white supremacist organizations.
Per Brian Maass, the reporter who interviewed Johnson:
Maass reported earlier Monday that one of the suspects told authorities they were "going to shoot Obama from a high vantage point using a ... rifle ... sighted at 750 yards."
If true and if convicted, put them under the jail and forget about them. Like I said, there is no room for this sort of thing in American politics. While they are free to think whatever they wish, when they attempt to turn that into action which violates the rights of another, they don't deserve to see the outside of a jail for a very long time.

Even though it looks as if there wasn’t a real credible threat, can we just throw them in jail to rot anyway?

This is the kind of thing the Democrats are praying for to turn up the burners on White Guilt to help Obama get elected.

Jail? Oh no.

See, I might not care much for the man, But Sen. Obama is one of MY Senators. He’s also the apparent nominee for the Dems. I repeat that I agree with the man on little to nothing, but if you don’t like someone who’s running, you work to persuade people to not vot for them. that’s how the system works - it is a contest of Ideas, not Power.

These guys should not, however, be locked up. For plotting to kill Sen Obama, I would personally like to see them put to death.

To paraphrase Churchhill (Winston, not Ward), this is something up with which I shall not put.

So, what’s the over under on who’s behind this.

1 - small group of lone nutbags
2 - Republicans (because they evhal)
3 - Clinton campaign machine (because she wants to be nominated)
4 - Obama campaign machine (because he needs even more sympathetic press

Republicans wouldn’t do this sorta thing.

If Clinton was behind it, it would be a done deal.

That leaves 1 or 4.

Now now...we can’t go killing them just because it’s Obama unless Colorado has the death penalty for conspiracy to commit murder. They should get whatever penalty anyone plotting murder gets (and I’m sure we’ll throw in the obligatory hate thought/crime charges too), and I’m sure there’s probably some Federal statues against plotting to kill a candidate.
So, under the jail is what it will be in the end.

Trying to kill a sitting President, that’s another story, but I don’t think that has a Federal death penalty associated with it either, based on John Unhinged Hinkley Jr’s sentence.

Just what this country needs - a black leader to get assassinated by white idiots.

Yep, that would do wonders for race relations.

And it would make Obama into a martyr - something I am sure these three geniuses didn’t think about. But it is so hard to think when you have a peach pit for a brain.

Heh - it’s just another reprise from ’68...

Bruce, thank you. You seem to be one of the few conservatives straightforwardly writing about this aborted plot without feeling the need to trivialize the threat to Obama or put people down for even mentioning it.

Technically, he’s not a conservative. But what conservatives are trivializing it? I mean, sure the secret service said it wasn’t a "credible threat," but a threat is a threat, and should be taken seriously.

That’s easily the most ridiculous rubbish that I’ve read today.

750 yards?

Well, unless it was a .338 or a .50BMG, and they’re professional military-grade snipers, they had zero chance of actually hitting him.

For that matter, you don’t "sight in" a rifle like that "at 750 yards". You use the scope to compensate for range given a known ballistics table.

(As for "high powered" rifles, well, the term is utterly meaningless in police and media use. I’d be shocked if they were more powerful than a .30-06 or .300 Magnum, and thus useless for precision shooting at 750 yards.)

This is not to suggest that the people in question might not want to shoot Sen. Obama, but that the "750 yards" claim is either a misstatement or proof of sheer incompetence on their part.
