Is this a smart strategy?
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, August 26, 2008

On the one hand you have the Obama campaign pulling out all the stops to have a 527 ad prevented from airing. The ad, by the American Issues Project, links Barack Obama with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers.

I can understand them wanting to quash that sort of a linkage.

But then they run an ad of their own to counter it?

Doesn't that now open the door for the McCain campaign to pick up on the theme (obviously it bothers the Obama campaign) and hammer it for quite some time?

There is no question as to who Ayers is or that he is an unrepentant domestic terrorist. None. Why in the world would you draw further attention to an association with him by running your own ad on the matter? It is like handing the issue to your opponent on a golden platter.

Like Willie Horton...didn’t know the man was black until the anti-add adds came out and the Dems made a huge stink about it.

In this case I knew Ayers was a terrorist, but for Obama to acknowledge any linkage is just stupid.

The conventional wisdom, according to Democrat strategists, keeps changing. First it was "don’t call attention to their attacks". Then after the Swift Boat guys hammered Kerry, it became "aggressively fight back against their message".

And all along, they have missed the whole point. If your opponents have a valid point, then no strategy is going to magically erase the damage.

But some responses are worse than others, and this one reeks of desperation and ineptitude. It threatens to bring in the mainstream media against Obama, because no matter what the Ayers association really is, Obama’s accusation that "John McCain is talking about..." is clearly false.

I think the best response when you get caught on something like this is to admit the facts and get points for candidness to offset some of the damage, and then try to move on. But what do I know? I’m not a politician. Whether it’s good strategy or just a characteristic of the personality type that tends to get into politics, dissembling about any flaw seems to be the automatic response from most of them.

On my own best inference, Obama and Ayers are fairly close friends and political allies and Obama and his campaign are doing their best to deny it.

And there’s this article in the WSJ that agrees with me on that score:
Many reporters are well aware, even though Mr. Obama has described his connection to Ayers and Dohrn as "flimsy," that the senator’s relationship with his radical Hyde Park neighbors is actually quite warm, even close.

In her tepid, wobbling way, Hillary Clinton has attempted to use this well-known fact to portray her opponent as a secret subversive. But mostly, the press doesn’t want to touch this story – and no one else does either, as if it actually were TNT. Perhaps right-wing evildoers are holding onto this story to exploit in the general election.
The author of that, Elizabeth Wurtzel, rationalizes the matter as a "let the 60’s die" issue and one of those "let’s move on" things.

The problem, of course, is not just that Ayers is an old Weatherman. He could be forgiven for that after 40 years. The problem is that Ayers has explicitly stated that he doesn’t regret his bombing campaign (Pentagon, U.S. Capitol, NYPD HQ) and wishes he had done more.

Also, Ayers has, a few years back, posed for a photograph as he stomped on the American flag.

That’s not a good friend for a candidate for President of the United States to have. So the friendship has to be airbrushed out of the Obama biography.

It explains the desperation — and that’s what it is — shown by the Obama campaign to attack this ad. The connection to Ayers is not the sort of thing that will play well in western Pennsylvania, among other places (though liberal Manhattan liberals would certainly sniff at it as "irrelevant").

Over at NRO’s he Corner, scholar-reporter Stanley Kurtz has been looking into the Obama-Ayers connection through something called the Annenberg Challenge foundation. Ayers and his wife and fellow terrorist Bernardine Dohrn are actually considerable players in Chicago politics and the head of the Democratic machine there, Mayor Richard Daley, has been out pooh-poohing the Ayers thing, saying that his terrorist days were long long ago, forgetting to acknowledge that Ayers wishes they weren’t.

Those zany wacky Weathermen, they were a hoot weren’t they?

The Obama campaign could sit pretty with the "So what?" approach (pioneered by the Clinton’s, of course) in Chicago, but they apparently think that’s not likely to work elsewhere, particularly with the photograph of Ayers stomping on the flag.

Hating America (Wright, Pfleger, Ayers, Farrakhan) seems to be to Chicago what the cheesesteak sandwich is to Philadelphia.

Sure, looker. Unfortunately, Brian McDonnell could not be reached for comment.

I guess they’ve decided that the Maoists in the Revolutionary Youth Movement were right, and there was in fact time to build a vanguard party. I just didn’t expect it to be the Democrats.

(Yes, I know looker’s comment was tongue in cheek, in case the reading incomprehension brigades are out and about.)

This is the ad that elicited Obama’s very ill-considered, very damaging response.

The killer point inside and outside the context of this ad is that "Obama’s political career was launched in Ayer’s home."

You’d think he’d try to refute that if in fact he could.

One thing about the Ayers connection: it is synergistec with the whole "Obama is anti-American" view.

Obama himself is rather cagey, but with his wife’s comments (and thesis), his pastor (of 20 odd years), his commie blogger, and Ayers on top of all this, we are painting a rather awful, anti-American picture.

To put it mildly.

Much of the Obama background consists of a reaching back to New Left conceits of the 1960: it’s The Revolution baby!

Jeremiah Wright’s "theological" mentor James Cone invented his "black theology" in the ’60s, as a variant of Marxist "liberation theology" (an attempt by Marxists to take the wheel of Christianity; see Michael Burleigh’s "Sacred Causes" for an account of how the political religions of the 20th century either tried to destroy traditional religions or convert them to their own uses).

Father Pfleger, Obama’s Catholic priest friend, borrows his way right into that, and is welcome in the pulpit of Wright’s church.

And it’s no big leap to understand why Wright and Pfleger both admire Farrakhan, because they all share the same anti-American animosities.

Ayers is actually the least exotic of the bunch. He’s just your garden-variety upper-middleclass white kid who thought he could get away with bombing the Pentagon and the Capitol, and did get away with it.

That’s Obama’s posse.

Obama got his original training from that old commie in Hawaii (whose name doesn’t immediately come to me) and then he later moved on to the Alinsky "community organizer" routine, which took him right to Chicago, its home.

You know, I should have gone for an Emily Latella moment -
"Why are so many people angry at Weathermen, predicting the weather is very hard to do, and I’m sure Mr. Ayers did the best he could to get the forecast right..."

"Why in the world would you draw further attention to an association with him by running your own ad on the matter?"

Good question - and one that is posed because, I believe, Obama’s campaign is being run by morons.

Now, I am not saying that as a Republican just to bash Obama. After all, as Russian tanks were invading Georgia, where was Obama? On vacation, in Hawaii. Either Obama or one of his advisors should have said, "Wait - we need to LOOK presidential. Obama will leave his vacation early, go back to the US mainland, and deliver speeches on foreign policy." Obama needed to make people believe that he is ready to be President.

Instead, he stayed in Hawaii, eating ice cream and playing golf, which McCain delivered those speeches on Georgia, which was why when he said "We are all Georgians" the crowds in Tbilisi yelled, "McCain! McCain!" Not "Obama! Obama!"

Obama’s campaign is doing the same thing with regard to his ads. He put up an ad with silly music and the song "Wonderful World" singing about gas prices and the middle class - an ad which was so bad I cringed. Who made this stuff up? And then Obama jumped on the housing issue - which allowed McCain to bring Tony Rezko up again.

So, is it smart to bring up Ayers? Of course not. Is is just one more sign that Obama’s campaign - and the candidate himself - are just not ready for prime time? Yes, it does.

And, as I predicted in January, McCain will be the winner in November. I don’t know the margin of victory - it will probably be wafer thin - but be prepared for images of Democrats to run into the street screaming about another lost election, so of what used to happen to Red Sox fans in October.

And they can lay this at the feet of Barack Obama and his campaign, who so far have used the time since he won the nomination to run ads with silly music and talk about McCain’s seven houses, while McCain has hammered Obama on every issue and demanded oil drilling to lower gas prices.

Yet another data point to add to the graph was a picture of a campaign worker in one of Obama’s campaign headquarters. On the wall , a picture of Martin Luther King? JFK? FDR? Nope ,Cuban revolutionist CHE!!! But,you know, move along, nothing to see here.

With a target rich background like Obama’s, it is fairly mystifying why the Clintons didn’t take him out in the primaries.

Maybe the Obama camp had a thick Clinton dossier of their own, which would explain the lack of Clinton action against Obama and the barely concealed fury at the "unfairness" when Obama took the nomination away from them.

Perhaps the Obama crowd had leveled the playing field, in a manner of speaking.

On the other hand, the media had many opportunities to follow-up on Obama’s problems, but it rarely did so. And when it did, it did so lifelessly. Aside from Reverend Wright, nothing really caught fire.

Che was such a good looking fellow — I would think his picture would look good in a McCain ad . . .

You know, the picture of Obama’s campaign headquarters with the Che picture in the background . . .

Obama is now caught in the many corners that he has painted himself into. He can’t ignore the McCain ads—his base is screaming that he must fight back vigorously every time the Right Wing Noise Machine whirs into gear.

If he ignores this stuff, it comes out anyway and he looks like a dunce for not taking it on early.

I think Obama is out of good moves. He can no longer walk in the clouds of hope and change; he has to be specific. There is little he can do between now and the election that won’t look like a bad choice.

I’ve read that The Annointed One’s campaign has also asked the DOJ to launch a criminal investigation of the group behind the Ayers ad. Can somebody tell me what federal law The Annointed One alleges has been violated? Or is the DOJ "threat" just a lot of hot air to try to get media outlets to realize that he’s SERIOUS.

Sadly, I’ve read that CNN (no surprise) will not run the ad, and neither will Fox News. So much for fearless journalism and staunch advocacy of freedom of speech. Guess the new mantra is:

"I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it... unless I get lots of e-mails telling me not to."

Martin — There was too much potential blowback in the party if the Clintons kneecapped Obama in an alley. Also, I think they flat underestimated Obama and the mania he created. As it was, Hillary came within fingernails of winning.

Well, yes, they would have lost the black vote. But the Clintons know how to false flag a political hit. Maybe they were just afraid that Vince Foster was going to fall out of the window of a Chicago skyscraper and land on the hood of Hillary’s limo.

I think the Clintons know what to do to fix the Party, and to be frank they know what to do to fix their own messes, but maybe, on the theory that Al Capone merely visited Hot Springs but ruled Chicago, the big city machine had the big trump card.

I don’t think those refusing to air the ad have a problem with an Obama-Ayers connection. Rather the objection is to the spurious 9/11 connection with which the ad starts.

Spurious? The Capitol was the 4th target on 9/11 of a group of America-hating Muslims. Ayers’ group did, however, bomb the Capitol in the 60’s. The connection is that both groups chose the Capitol as a target to display their hate for America. Having Ayers as an acquaintenance is o.k., even though the guy bombed our Capitol. Would having any of the Muslims that attempted to bomb our Capitol on 9/11 as an acquaintenance be acceptable (if they survived)? How are the two groups that different (besides their origin)?

Spurious? United Flight 93 was aimed at the Capitol, Ayers Weather Underground managed to blow up the capitol...Spurious connection?
That’s it huh? That’s a stretch.
Must be more of the nuance that people are so worried about.

The whole point of the add is about Ayers being a terrorist, and Obama working with the man.
I have to ask myself if I’d be willing to work with a guy who was an avowed terrorist and had attacked the US, I don’t care WHAT his reasons were.

And since I was alive at the time, I can speak with the authority of saying Ayers and his organization were not justified in their actions.
THEY didn’t END the war, they just terrorized and killed people.

By the way, thanks for getting me to watch the add. Good work.

And IS - we’re obviously on the same page...you beat me to it I see.

Spurious? Perhaps this glorious coincidence even took the smirk off of Ayers’ face for the time it took to count the dead at the Pentagon. Or more likely it didn’t. Note the date of the article.

I wonder of those who don’t find Ayers bombing to be problematic, would be quite so calm about things if he’d bombed the IRS, instead.
