Where there is smoke ...
Posted by: McQ on Thursday, August 28, 2008

There is usually fire.

MichaelW brings you up to date with the Ayres/Obama connection and the over-the-top reaction of the Obama campaign concerning a particular 527 ad.

It gets worse. Today they've gone after Chicago's WGN radio station because they're having Stanley Kurtz on:
"WGN radio is giving right-wing hatchet man Stanley Kurtz a forum to air his baseless, fear-mongering terrorist smears," Obama's campaign wrote in an e-mail to supporters. "He's currently scheduled to spend a solid two-hour block from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m. pushing lies, distortions, and manipulations about Barack and University of Illinois professor William Ayers."
"Pushing lies, distortions and manipulations" about Obama? Wow. At the time he hadn't even gotten on the air and the Obama campaign has already smeared the man.

And, of course, the irony is totally lost on them:
"Tell WGN that by providing Kurtz with airtime, they are legitimizing baseless attacks from a smear-merchant and lowering the standards of political discourse," the note said.

"It is absolutely unacceptable that WGN would give a slimy character assassin like Kurtz time for his divisive, destructive ranting on our public airwaves," the note continued. "At the very least, they should offer sane, honest rebuttal to every one of Kurtz's lies."
Folks this is major league fear and desperation being voiced on the part of the Obama campaign. It should provide the incentive for every real journalist out there to dig into this story as deeply as they can. The campaign is very, very worried about something.

isn’t Kurtz kind of center/center-left? and is there a chance they just have the wrong Kurtz?

Look at that last line about rebuttal.

They’re gonna gin this up and use it as a political cover/pretext to cram the Fairness Doctrine down our throats post-election.

Actually I had the wrong Kurtz, I was thinking of Howard Kurtz with that center/left-center comment.

Geez - if he’s just a University professor, what’s the big deal?

Stanley Kurtz is about the most dignified, thorough, careful reporter-scholar you’ll find anywhere.

He’s a gentleman, not a character assassin, "smear merchant," or "right-wing hatchet man."

If those Obama people are willing to say that about someone like Kurtz, then they are indeed terrified by what Kurtz is finding in Obama’s background.

Kurtz is restoring just some of the facts from Obama’s very immediate past that the Obama campaign believes it has successfully airbrushed out of the picture.

If any references to those facts as they are carefully documented in plain sight are going to be attacked as smears, imagine what this Obama Chicago crew will be like after they’ve been on presidential steroids for just a few months, should Obama win.

People, meet the "Fairness Doctrine" under the Democrats.

And after a President Obama gets to replace a few judges and justices in our court system, narry a negative word could be said about them.

Seems to me it gets better than that;
As of yet, I’ve not heard one... ONE... specific denial of any specific charge Kurtz has made. Not one.

The First Amendment to the Constitution is being recalled to add "unless you try to say or print anything the Democrats disapprove of."

I don’t think it will work. The emperor has no clothes. Nobody can make the story go away. The first rule of arguments - name calling is an admission the facts are on the other side.

If one can’t make the case that Obama should be president because of his accomplishments or his judgement, what’s left?

Nothing.

"Another pro-Obama woman called and, after accusing Stanley of slander but of course not citing anything he said that was slanderous, stated, ’We want it to stop.’ Milt asked what she wanted stopped, and she replied, ’It’s just not what we believe as Americans.’ Milt tried again, asking what she didn’t believe. She responded that it was someone saying bad things about Barack Obama and, again, we just want it to stop."
(Andy McCarthy on this thing, at NRO)

Know what? You could find almost endless variations on that discussion in Ayn Rand, fifty years ago.

Endarkenment. Reason just doesn’t count anymore.

That’s what happens when people listen, but don’t think...

"We need to stop this" absent any actual information, and off they go...

I’m really starting to wonder if, all pardons to Goodwin, Obama isn’t more like a certain national leader than we suspected...

What you’re watching here is the emergence of a freicorps that will begin its real work on the day Obama is inaugurated. It’s operating now in the context of an election campaign. Wait until it operates in the context of power.

And it’s not going to be staffed by those wimps from the netroots. They won’t have the stomach for it.

"We just want it to stop."

Just get the power, Barack!

Reason just doesn’t count anymore.
It’s true enough; What we’re being presented from tehse people simply defies logic as we understand logic. The reason we as a nation have such a hard time arguing against this kind of nonsense using logic is that it’s not based in logic to begin with.

there’s no question in my mind that there will always be such people, in some amount, but the question, once that’s admitted, is how to bring that number down to more tolerable levels.

I suggest and believe, as I have argued here and at my own place, for years now, that the way to accomplish that is a concentration on reinforcement of the cultural values that made this country a great one initialy, the absense of which threatens us today. It’s that culture on which our version of reason is based. Without that foundation... is it any wonder the walls are falling in on us?

Of course changing mids at that level takes time... and I wonder a lot if we actually have time enough for the task.

Hmmmm....Well, here’s where we’ve seperated in the past, Billy.
I’ll demonstrate the seperation with a question:

Are we talking about us as a people, or us as individuals?

No question that it was a multi-geneational process that got us this far away from the ideas and ideals that established us, and so logically, it will be so getting BACK, as well, if it happens at all. And I’ve pretty much written off the idea of us getting back to where we need to be wthin my lifetime, as I’ve told you.

But perhaps you misunderstand the thrust of my question; I’m speaking to our having enough time to counter the problem, even from a multi-generational standpoint, before the whole bloody mess falls in on itself because of the illogic we’ve taken on in the name of ’cultural openess’.

Of course I’m just a cynical old b@$+@*d, as one feedback last night put it, right?

I doubt there’s anything specific to fear in the Obama-Ayres relationship but I don’t that’s the reason for the overreaction.

Legends have grown up about the 2000 and 2004 elections. The 2000 election was stolen by fraud, deceit, and a conservative Supreme Court; John Kerry lost the 2004 election not because he was a poor candidate who was despised by some of the Viet Nam vets for his conduct after leaving the service but because he was unfairly lied about. The legends are now more important than the truth and Democratic activists are bound and determined not to let it happen again. Of course, it’s pretty hard to devise an effective remedy when you’re wrong about what the disease is.

So I expect that we’ll be seeing these overreactions all the way to November and maybe beyond, win or lose. When you’re taking care to avoid the recurrence of events that never happened you’re bound to be grappling with shadows.

That’s a very good assessment Dave. But given what they did to mobilize their Chicago constituency is nothing less that what they claim to be fighting - they insulted, defamed and smeared Kurtz.

That’s more than grappling with shadows. That’s being what you claim to be fighting. And that can backfire profoundly in the short time left between now and November.

But remember who it is that suppports him, Bruce. That they support him in this, would seem to dampen the chances of shaming him.

The fact that Obama’s thugs are trying to kill this story before it even gets out tells me that they are frightened to death that it will get out.

William Ayers is the key to this election. The more people hear about how Barack Obama was cavorting (I like that word) and making nice with a domestic terrorist who blew up bombs in the Pentagon, the more Obama will look like the left-wing nutjob those of us who have studied him realize that he is.

And Joe Biden can go to hell.

Maybe, but not on the current evidence.

Well, he’s still in the race, just got the Democratic nomination, and it’s well know that he was cavorting with a racist church for the past 20 years.

What’s needed is just one little audio or video clip, or some very direct evidence, that would put Obama and Ayers on the same ideological page.

Something that in its immediacy rips Obama’s mask clean off. Something like the "clinging to guns and religion" audio clip X10.

I’m not so sure that anything, up to and including being videotaped stabbing puppies with a fork, will cause a massive desertion of Obama’s base, Martin.

You’re basing your arguments and projections on logic, you see... and the support for him is not... and is therefore not arguable on logical ground.

Yeah, there’s about one-third of the country that will stick with the messiah, no matter what.

But that’s not enough to get him elected.

Harun;

That Obama is friends with Ayers.. an unrepentant terrorist... serves on boards with him, and accepts Ayers’ political help, makes Obama’s values and his judgment both highly suspect, in my view.

Frankly, that you don’t understand that on an intuitive level makes me wonder about yours, as well.
