Palin: If she can stand the heat, she could be fun
Posted by: McQ on Friday, August 29, 2008

Let's see how this breaks out.

Foreign policy and national security are the forte of the executive. The Democrats have nominated a presidential candidate with no experience in either area. The Republicans have nominated a vice presidential candidate with no experience in either area.

Which makes more sense to you?

Under the topic of change, the Democrats nominate two US male Senators, one who is the consummate Washington insider and claim to be outsiders who are going to change Washington. The Republicans nominate a Senator with the reputation of a maverick and the Governor of Alaska with a similar rep who, btw, is female, to take on Washington.

Which sounds more like change to you?

On the subject of experience, the Democrats nominate a man who has been a community organizer, State Senator and, for 147 days, a US Senator to be President. The Republicans nominate as VP a woman who has run a town and run a state for a lot longer than Obama has been in the Senate.

In terms of "what have you done and what have you run" who has the edge?

If Palin can handle being thrust into the limelight as suddenly has she has, given her speech today, she is going to be fun and, I think, she could very well re-energize the right at a very critical time in the election cycle.

Ok, but not to be flippant but she is governor of a state with two foreign nations on its borders (Russia and Canada). So I am sure that she has had dealings with them. Sorta hard not to.

She looked nervous at the beginning of the introduction today in Dayton, but as she warmed up to her subject she appeared poised and in command. And she did it without a teleprompter. She most definitely energizes a Conservative base that was less than enthusiastic with Sen McCain.

This is going to be a most interesting election.

147 days? Did you mean, "for the next 147 days"?

So could you please explain the "has run a state for a lot longer than Obama has been in the Senate" part — as that would appear to be, um, wrong.

In any event, even taking your thesis at face value, all that gets McCain is, "Let’s skip the battle of the resumes and talk about the issues. Did I mention that my VP pick loves oil and hates polar bears?"

Etc.

Kip, just a guess, but my suspicion is that he is counting from when Obama was sworn in to when he started running for president.

Obama was in the Senate for 147 days before he began his permanent run for the presidency. Other than occasional stops for a vote, he’s been AWOL.

Sara Palin has been governor of Alaska for almost 2 years (and hasn’t run for anything). I assume you can do the math in terms of days in office doing what they were actually elected to do.

And her experience has been executive experience (both as a mayor and governor), while all Obama has is legislative experience.

If nothing else, she certainly seems to have accomplished more as a Governor than Obama has as a Senator.

Also, I find it humorous that while Obama is running on ’change’, he doesn’t seem to have done much to accomplish any change while a Senator. Mrs Palin on the other hand seems to be doing a pretty good job of stomping on governmental corruption. Sounds like Change we can believe in.

"and, for 147 days, a US Senator to be President"

Wasn’t Obama elected in 2004? He may have been a Senator for 147 days before starting to run for President, but he’s been Senator for more than 147 days.

Not in terms of experience, and that’s the point here. As I said earlier, he has 147 days experience doing what he was elected to do.

Palin has been in political office since 1992, Obama 1997. Plus she has had 2 executive level positions, mayor of Alaska’s largest growing city and the state itself.

And Obama was a community organizer. ok then....

Being a Fred-neck, I was only luke-warm to McCain’s candidacy. I probably would have just stayed home in November. All I can say about the Palin choice is WOW! This is a very smart pick for McCain! Everytime Obama’s minions trash Palin they reopen the wounds of the Hillraisers. Geez....I think I’ve just been energized to get out and vote.

Indeed. Let’s not forget that this being head of the Arkansas NG was exactly what Bill Clinton & the Dems used in ’92 for his experience against Bush Sr. Let them mock the fact that this is the extent of Palin’s experience - as you say, it is FAR more than Obama has! One more thing, Palin visited the wounded troops in Germany this past summer when Obama was too damn "busy" to be bothered with them. Go ahead Dems, bring it.

Bruce, my family is energized more than ever to vote for McCain/Palin. Heck, my sister was nearly in tears when she found out and was shaking. Yeah she has been wanting to see a woman on the ticket for years now - but NOT a liberal Democrat. She wanted a strong, independent woman she could respect. Palin is just such a woman with an impressive backround. I’m thrilled with the pick myself. I mean the woman hunts moose for crying out loud - she’s more of a "man" than Obama is!!! This was a masterful stroke picking her. McCain, you magnificent bastard you - and I mean both words with equal force.

For the 147 days part, could I get a link to an actual/official timeline. I would like to use this elsewhere.
Thanks.

The facts about "Wooten-Gate" are coming out so fast that I would be surprised if Palin was the VP nominee a week from now. It’s not even the issue - it’s the petiness and smallness of the issue that will cook her goose. She looks patehtic. How sad. She seems nice, despite the fact that she thinks the Earth was created 10000 years ago.

Palin = Eagelton.

What’s weird is that the McCain people did not think this through. Who is in charge of vetting? Fire him or her. Someday someone will write a book about this and make a lot of money. After all, it is interesting. But sad and pathetic.

Wow. Just wow. I didn’t think it would end this way.

Try this.

As an aside, I truly enjoy it when MK goes bonkers.

I mean wow. Just wow.

What had he done?"

I think I should point out that the link you give says 143 days not 147.
And though not quite what I was hoping for, I guess I will just start requesting that the Husseiniacs tell me when exactly Barrack formed his exploratory committee.

Yep. MK is evidently totally unconcerned about, say, Obama’s connections to Rezco, Ayers, and Wright, let alone the corrupt Chicago machine, but a Gov legally firing one of her employees over a budget dispute (which the troopers later tried to turn into the situation MK is all incensed about) gets his shorts in a bunch.

How about when everything about ’Troopergate’ comes out the Dems end up with egg all over their face?

Please ... bring on the battle of the resumes. Why are you guys so eager to take experience off the table? Gov. Palin’s experience occupies a space between McCain and Obama. Far less than the former and certainly more than the latter. Please, let’s compare resume size. At the end of the day, our Vice President is more qualified than your President. That’s like saying our center can out perform your quarterback.

Today’s New York Post headline read: WOW! She hunts, she fishes! Palin, apparently, is the female Cheney (I hope she’s a better shot)! Get real folks—-McCain has one foot on the banana peel and he decides that a cross between the Gloucester fisherman and Elmer Fudd with a twist of Andy of Mayberry is good for the country just in case he is temporarily or permanently indisposed? Good lord, it’s surrealistically unbelievable. I am sickened and highly insulted by Palin aligning herself with Hillary Clinton even as a "woman breaking the glass ceiling." She is NOT Hillary Clinton in any way and certainly has not put the good of her country first as Hillary did by bringing the Democrats together. Isn’t it remarkable that Palin did not feel remotely remiss in partnering with a man she knew for a day and went ahead to accept a partnering with him accepting this VEEP position? I would hope an individual with a good conscience would have counseled McCain to choose a woman like Kay Bailey Hutchinson or another proven Republican. Palin is an abominable, abysmal choice. She doesn’t even value the domain of helpless Polar bears, what could she possibly do for this country or Israel?

I can only assume that you’re not serious or, alternatively, have spent too many years in an academic environment, which would also account for the "not serious" impression.

Your parody of Obama’s "bitter and cling to their guns and religion" comment is right on target, however.

Or, alternatively, you have no idea of how powerful a candidate Palin will be in western Pennsylvania, blue collar Michigan, all over Ohio, northern Florida, etc.

She is exactly the person those voters can relate to. They don’t, and cannot, relate to the buffoon mentalist.
