A Gutter-al Scream (Updated)
Posted by: MichaelW on Saturday, August 30, 2008

It's almost as if the Dems can't help but to resort to misogynistic antagonism in dealing with Gov. Sarah Palin. This comes courtesy of Alan Colmes, citing Rogers Cadenhead who questions Palin's maternal abilities:
One bit of weirdness associated with Palin concerns the birth of her youngest child. As the Alaskan media reported, Palin was attending an energy conference in Texas on April 18 when her water broke four weeks before her due date. After this happened, Palin didn't head to a hospital or even leave the conference, even though the premature rupture of fetal membrances is normally a cause for an immediate examination by an obstetrician, who will observe the fetus on a monitor to guard against infection and other life-threatening complications. Two other reasons for heightened concern were Palin's age, 43, and the fact that prenatal testing indicated the child had Down syndrome.

Palin stayed at the conference and delivered a 30-minute speech, then boarded a 12-hour Alaska Airlines flight from Dallas to Anchorage, neglecting to tell the airline her water had broken — most airlines won't fly a woman in labor. The motivation for all of this appears to be the Palins' desire that the child be born in Alaska. Her husband Todd told the Anchorage Daily News, "You can't have a fish picker from Texas."

When she arrived home, Palin was hospitalized immediately and the baby was born prematurely after labor was induced in the middle of the night.
Aside from baby Trig suffering from Down Syndrome, the child was quite healthy at delivery and has been doing fine ever since. It is true that when amino leaks occur, the general advice of doctors is to get to the hospital immediately, but that is not always the case. In fact, when delivery proceeds within 24 hours of an amino leak (a.k.a. water breaking), the risks of any complications to the baby are quite low. Indeed, some women experience minor leakages, as Palin did, well before they are due without any complications whatsoever.

In Palin's case, she delivered Trig well within the 24 hour window recognized as "safe," and actually had to be induced because she wasn't in labor. Moreover, she was in touch were her physician throughout the event, and he did not advise her to act otherwise.

As an aside, the accusation that Trig was born prematurely does not seem to hold water (no pun intended ... well, maybe a little) since Palin was past her 36th week, and the definition of "premature birth" is a baby born prior to the 37th week of gestation.

In any case, these are just facts that undermine the credibility of anyone asserting such ridiculous accusations. That Obama supporters are seriously challenging Palin's credibility and competence as a mother is just stunning on a political level. Not just in the brashness, but also in the sheer stupidity of leveling such charges. I mean, how do idiots like Colmes and Cadenhead think women are going to react to their second-guessing of Palin's birthing decisions?

I can hear my wife's retort now: "You try carrying a bowling ball in your belly for 40 weeks, and then shooting it out your pee-hole with the entire hospital staff staring at your nether region. And that's not even mentioning having to pee every 20 minutes, feeling like a fat cow, persistent fatigue, and constantly worrying about how your caring for unborn child. Plus you have to do your job just as competently and efficiently as you always did before you were pregnant (including dealing with any previously born children), only to be confronted with some a$$wipe having the nerve to tell you 'You're doing it wrong'."

I imagine that a lot of women would feel the same way.

**UPDATE**

Some commenters are pointing to the DKos speculation that Palin did not actually give birth to Trig, but instead it was her 17-year-old daughter who did, and the Governor is just covering for her.
Okay, I just have to diary about this, although in many ways this falls into the "none of our business category".

But it appears that Pallin's last child, a baby with Down's syndrome, may not be hers. It may be that of her teenage daughter.

[...]

Apparently her teenage daughter was out of school, unseen, for months, because she "had mono".

I'm not quite sure what to think of this. Seeing as how she opposes abortion even in cases of rape and incest maybe she's actually not a hypocrite.

Normally I'd say this is a totally private issue for them, but seeing as how she's quite willing to butt into the private lives of every other American woman, I think it's fair game.
This sort of conspiracy mongering is so pathetic it doesn't even deserve a debunking. However, it is yet another indication of how the left is rather confounded by McCain's VP pick. So far, the dirt that's being cast about regarding Palin just makes the peddlers look nasty and ill-informed, and actually makes the VP candidate look pretty darned good.

Near as I can tell, no Lefty (or anyone very close to being a Lefty) can conceive of anyone who thinks differently than they do. So, obviously, anyone who claims to think differently than a Lefty is lying or delusional or something. Since behavior obviously (for a Lefty) flows from thought, Lefties also can’t understand anyone acting differently than they think they would.

From this lack of ability comes all the Lefty urge to force others to think/act properly, using government force.

Puts the whole concept of "tolerance" in a different light, doesn’t it.

Relatedly, it often occurs to me that the moral equivalence so often favored by those of the "liberal" stripe is merely another way of saying: "I don’t come off too well in this particular system, but there must be another one where I do, so we shouldn’t reject any others out of hand since doing so ruins my chance of finding moral clarity without having to accept personal responsibility."

I’ve given birth to four kids (two without anesthesia) and I gotta tell ya, I agree with MichaelW’s wife. And I’d add that by the time you’ve popped out a few of ’em, you get to know the inside of your own body pretty well, and you pretty much know what’s going on by the way it feels. First-time moms feel like they need a doctor to tell them what’s going on and they call in the nurse with every little ouchie, but by the time you get to your fifth you can pretty much tell how many centimeters you’re dilated, and you know exactly what you need to do. Sarah Palin doesn’t strike me as the kind of candy-@$$ modern woman who would run to the hospital at 1 cm, get her epidural turned up all the way and then sit back passively and wait for the doctor to tell her when to push. She strikes me more as the Sacagawea kind of woman who would go out into the bushes pregnant and come back an hour later with a nursling strapped to her breast and get back to work.

The only thing I find surprising about this birth story is that they let her on the plane going TO Texas in the first place. As far as I know it’s routine to deny travel to a woman that close to her due date. Maybe they made an exception because she was the governor.

I think the Dems are so shell-shocked that McCain chose a woman that they are just besides themselves how to combat this. If they don’t question her fitness, they are not "fighting back" - but how to do it without ticking off millions of women? After all they already had to apologize for the "Palin is from a small town" crack. And that was just one day after she was chosen.

The Obama campaign is poised to go overboard, and they don’t realize it. They had their minions in the press demonize Hillary Clinton every which way (even though I cared less if they want to chew up one of their own), and now want them to throw the book at Palin. But Hillary was a candidate; Palin is the VP nominee.

Susan Estrich said on Fox that half of her feminist friends are against the pick, but the other half are quite interested and may turn to see a woman one step from the presidency. We need to spread the word: if women vote against Palin, this may be the last time one is picked for a major party ticket. 24 years between two campaigns is a lot, but two defeats will turn people against the idea.

So, women of America: do you want to crack that final glass ceiling? Vote McCain/Palin. And you may have that female President you always dream of. You won’t get it with Obama/Biden, the Unqualified and the Boring Man Ticket.

(Just for the record, I sound nothing like myself. Just to let you folks know that.)

Palin is driving them crazy!
That’s because she is the utter contradiction of everything that they believe in.

She’s a woman who pushed the boys aside in Alaska, who respects the sanctity of life, who shoots and hunts, who is feminine, athletic, outspoken, worst of all conservative, and who has a husband who could make Chevy truck commercials without acting. As they move to disparage her, they’ll be throwing themselves off of cliffs, but they can’t stop themselves, because that is all that they know.

She will by her nature show Joe Biden to be the bloviating jackass he is and help McCain show Obama to be the callow elitist that he is. And that woman is "clinging to her guns and her religion," for sure.

It speaks for itself, coming from the "kill them if they’re born alive during an abortion" infant protection crowd.

The Neo-Eugenics crowd that has zero mercy for a gestating Down Syndrome child.

It appears dear little worm Alan has memory holed the post. No apology, no correction, he is just pretending he never said it.

I’m willing to bet that if anyone calls him on it, he will look confused and say he doesn’t know what they are talking about.

Even Emily Litella had the grace to say, "Never mind."

As a nurse, it’s a well known fact that once a woman’s water breaks she should seek medical attention immediately. Not doing so places the unborn child and mother at risk for developing sepsis - severe systemic infection. Furthermore, a woman, pregnant with her 5th child would deliver much sooner than the 13+ hour window Gov. Palin wants us to believe she had.

She’s a governor with a 80% approval rating while 87% of Alaskans are positive that she’s lying about her hand in having or trying to have her ex brother-in-law fired. Governor Palin appears to be very well-spoken, an advocate of political reform and yes a self-described hockey mom. But she’s also a blatant liar who didn’t think her plan to attempt to cover up her oldest daughters pregnancy would ever come back to haunt her.

Roschelle do you have any, I don’t know, EVIDENCE, that the child is her daughter’s? And why would she cover for her daughter, just a question, there? Now let’s see Dick Cheney’s daughter is a LESBIAN, but we didn’t stone him or her, "we" being the dreaded extra-chromosonal Christian-Taliban Wing of the Party, but an out-of-wedlock birth, now for THAT we’d rise up?

And don’t stop here, please carry on with the whole set of rumours:
1) It’s Willow’s
2) It’s hers, but she caused the Down’s Syndrome; or
3) Both Willow AND Gov. Palin were/are pregnant...

Roschelle she DID seek medical attention, she called her doctor, In AK who, apparently, didn’t feel there was a threat...

Hold it HER water broke, did it, REALLY, then this isn’t WIllow’s baby, or is it WIllow’s, but then how did Gov. Palin emdanger the baby? I don’t know, I’M SO CONFUSED....which is it Roschelle, her baby, and her water, and she endangered it, or is it Willow’s baby, so no water broke and Gov. Palin endangered NOTHING?!

Please h’ep me out here....

Roschelle, it’s strange that you would be a nurse when you show so little compassion for a fellow human being. Shame on you. What is it about people that they have such a pathetic need to tear down others? Sarah Palin is a beautiful person. She has more goodness in her heart than you will ever know. The spectacle of women trying to tsmear this wonder(ful) woman is just disgusting. But thank you for providing my 3 daughters a perfect example of what I’ve been teaching them for years, i.e. true feminists versus poseurs like yourself.

It’s almost as if the Dems can’t help but to resort to misogynistic antagonism in dealing with Gov. Sarah Palin.
I am reminded of an old Steely Dan tune, wherein we find:

"Like a gangster on the run, you will stagger home, to your precious one".
OK, the reference is a little vauge, and I suppose you’d need to be a fan of Steely Dan’s "thinking man’s music" to understand the reference.

I made a bit of reference to this whole thing the other day:

Consider Hillary Clinton, whose sole reason for having the power she has today is because her erstwhile ‘husband’ repeatedly screwed around on her. Given Hillary Clinton as the example of the powerful woman, it’s logical to assume all women who attain positions of power, have similar backgrounds, or slept their way to the top. This is in no small part, a fear reaction. They don’t understand it, so there’s only one possibility. Sex.

Thing is, Palin, in reality, presents no such attachments. Not only is this a woman who attained her position on her own, and without the soap opera, she raised a family, with a special needs kid, while her Hubby was off earning a living, to boot. These morons simply don’t understand it, and can find in their list of possibilities, only one condition for Palin to have been so successful.

Open minded, these Democrats. For possibly the first time in their lives they’re being confronted with a powerful woman who didn’t get her power from a bunch of know-nothings on a sympathy jag. And they simply don’t know how to cope. Or, maybe they just don’t like a powerful woman. Either way, what we’re witness to here is a fear reaction. Anyone who has seen a cornered raccoon, will tell you fear reactions can get pretty nasty.
So, when we now see Colmes... (...who, even before he became an item in the political world, really has never been worth the air he wastes...)... comes up with a knee-jerk line in this way, I cannot say I’m surprised. It’s pretty much expected, in fact. The bottom line is, he’s scared to death, too, and doesn’t know what else to do. So, he goes instinctively down the road most familiar to him.

Who said this?
Growing up, I thought my mom knew everything. How could she possibly be wrong? After all, she was my mother. If she said I was a democrat, then I was a democrat. If she said the tooth fairy would visit me the night I lost my tooth, then I knew to try with all my might to drift off to sleep as soon as possible. You know the tooth fairy isn’t so nice if she finds you awake!
Still, the most important things my mom told me were about who I was. According to my mom and of course she knew everything, I was beautiful. I was a gift from God.I should love all people and respect everyone. I should never be a follower instead be a leader.
Yeah, Roschelle-go read it.

Roschelle, as a nurse, you ought to know that the near-universal reaction from nurses when women call the OB ward with "X is happening, should I come into the hospital?" is "No, just wait until your contractions are Y minutes apart and regular." So don’t pretend that if Sarah Palin had called your OB ward she would have been told anything different. And if I had a dollar for every pregnant woman who had been given bad advice on when to come in by an OB nurse, I would be rich; but you can’t sue nurses for malpractice, can you?

And as a nurse, you should also know that each pregnancy is different (even fifth pregnancies), that amniotic ruptures vary in scale from huge deliver-me-now gushers to pantyliner-level drips, and that not every rupture results in instant labor. I’ve heard plenty of labor stories where the membranes were broken, either by the doc or on their own, and the mother went 24 hours before going into labor. They don’t let them go past 24 hours because of the danger of sepsis, but inside of 24 hours there’s not much danger unless the woman goes swimming in a ditch. A multip with 4 successful births is going to know when she’s in labor and when she’s not without deferring to the likes of you, and Palin knew she was not in labor.

Let’s suspend our beliefs for a moment and pretend everything they say at DailyKos is true: that Governor Palin has secretly adopted her teen-aged daughter’s Downs-Syndrome baby.

Does that somehow make her evil?

Not in my book. To willingly take on the responsibility of a child with Downs take an amazing amount of mettle, far more than most of us will have to face in our lives.

Compare and contrast Palin’s alleged actions with Obama’s statement that he wouldn’t want his daughters "punished" with a baby if they make a mistake.

Who is the greater humanitarian?
