The left’s reaction to Palin is simply stunning
Posted by: McQ on Sunday, August 31, 2008

And you can mark my words - they will go to far. They simply can't help themselves. As you'll see, they're already headed in that direction.

Ron Beasley of Newshoggers quotes some sound advice from Digby of Hullabaloo for the suddenly apoplectic left:
So, I wouldn't be too smug about Palin. She's got something about her that the people who know her really like. She has an 85% approval rating up there, which includes quite a few liberals. Her western state appeal is an amalgam of right wing populism and libertarianism, something that shouldn't be discounted among swing voters who might also find her to be an attractive working mom who manages to run the state while taking care of her snowmobile champion husband (Arctic NASCAR) and their five kids. (A politically incorrect friend of mine in Alaska called the ticket "The Maverick and the MILF" and it may work better than we think.)
Even when dispensing sage advice, Digby can't resist a dig or two herself(MILF? "Arctic NASCAR"?).

Beasley adds his own advice:
I think the best thing the Obama/Biden campaign can do is ignore her. Anything they say will be seen a sexist. The POW thing is getting old we don't need to have it replaced with misogyny. Above all we should stay away from this.
The "this" Beasley links too is the Kos Dairy MichaelW addresses in his update below.

Interestingly there's a poll on the dairy which asks whether it is appropriate to continue to spread the rumor that Palin covered up her daughter's pregnancy. At the time of this writing there were 13,714 votes. 60% of the readers there said "Yes, the future of the world is at stake, nothing's off the table."

Well, except Ayers, Trinity Baptist church, Obama's wife, Obama's children, Obama's middle name, his patriotism, race and record.

But other that that, everything, no matter how despicable, is on the table.

I never really expected anything better from the left, they have sort of set the bar kinda low. It will be somewhat amusing to see them attack her for her family, her down syndrome child, her religion, and her hunting and fishing.

It’s all coming, they have only started. Pass the popcorn.

This is a winning line of attack for the left. They should be encouraged to continue on with and even expand it. In fact they should demand loudly and persistently that Obama himself come out and say these very things starting with her just being some backwoods hick from a small town to her being an unfit mother who was covering up her daughters pregnancy.

Heck, some of her supporters are pushing the MILF thing and selling a few bumper stickers while they’re at it ;)

I really wonder if we - those that mostly live on the Right - live in a different universe than that inhabited on the left. I have read political blogs extensively over the last few days, from the Kos Kiddies vileness to the (mostly) gleeful Corner, and bunches in-between, and the different takes couldn’t be more stark.

For those on the right she’s as good a choice as McCain could have made, and in many respects complements his strengths and covers his weaknesses better than possibly an other candidate. This holds true even if she weren’t a woman; the fact that she is just throws Dem’s into a tizzy of identity politics backlash. Dem’s need to understand this, and they will not - her politics make her the right pick, not her gender. That’s the bonus track. Not only will they not understand it, it won’t even occur to them.

Yet for those on the left, the pick of Gov Palin is a joke, a la Eleanor Clift, Don Fowler, and Congressman Spratt, an insult to women, a la NOW, or she’s living the fairy tale, a la Maureen Dowd. Or it’s handed the election to the Democrats as told to us by our resident village idiots MK and Erb. Seriously? This is what the Dems think? After it killed Obama’s post convention bounce and brought millions to McCains campaign over the last 24 hours after her pick?

Are we really this far apart?

Is the cognitive dissodence as disconcerting to y’all as it is to me?

WNFB, the reason you see that split is because we start from a completely different set of base rules than they do.

When you start from the idea that the collective is more important than the individual, then individuals do not contain much worth (if any at all) and it’s easier to deride those who don’t follow your views.

When you view the individual as the starting point for everything, you realize each person has worth and therefor are less able to insult and attempt to tear them down.

I can’t blame them really. It’s incredibly hard to paint a hard-working, pretty, telegenic, young, mother of 5 as "the next Cheney"

All that time and money spent on developing a strategy and oppo research down the tubes. You’d be cranky also.

The left clearly lives in a different world. They live in Narnia. The White Witch took office in 2001 and snow suddenly covered the world. If their guy wins in November, summer will return to the nation the instant Obama takes the oath of office.

I do not live in Narnia. Things have been fine for me and my family all along. The worst economy in 200 years didn’t faze us at all.

Hey, I am down with the MILF meme. I mean, she is America’s Hottest Governor! Lee was on to her possibilities a long time ago.

I’m struck too by the large gulf separating red and blue. The notion that millions of people considered Obama’s bland and querulous convention speech historic boggles my mind. I’m not surprised by the paradoxical attacks on Palin.

Yet I lived in that blue world for most of my adult life. Much of that came out of the sixties: the assassinations, the horror of Vietnam, Watergate, the countercultural questioning of Western values and an apocalyptic sense that the world was on the verge of destruction added up to a huge, instinctive distrust of the US government and the right-wing. Then those combined with a large ignorance of history and economics plus a cozy communal certainty that good people agreed on these things and bad people didn’t.

That’s my thumbnail take on the blue worldview. It seems very persuasive while you are in the middle of it.

On ARFCOM the MILF thing was strong; some are calling the ticket "McMilf". Crude, yeah, but some of us 45 year olds are not all that mature.

Pretty good theme song for the campaign. I’d rather try to work something about a barracuda into that than go with the Heart song.

"And you can mark my words - they will go to [sic] far."

How prescient!

I said in the comments for the previous story, "A Gutter-al Scream," the following:

"The Obama campaign is poised to go overboard, and they don’t realize it."

Sounds familiar, no? Did I beat someone to the punch?

No disrespect, but I read the comments on Daily Kos yesterday, and was sickened to my core at the pathetic and delusional backslapping from the Left. It went like, "Hey! Palin’s baby is her daughter’s! Yeah!" And one of their fellow Neanderthals piped up, "You are so right! I can see where that is true! Let’s expose this woman and demand she tell the truth before we have to force her and make her leave the ticket!"

The level of paranoia - "This is a cover-up from a woman who hates a woman’s right to choose" - is unfathomable on the Left.

I say this again and again, and I am sure I sound like a broken record, but I repeat: If you want this crowd controlling America, stay home or vote Obama. The Daily Kos and Cindy Sheehan Hate America First crowd will thank you.

(And if that mean’s I am questioning their patriotism, that is simply tough crap.)

You know, if calling Palin MILF is so bad (and I’m not wild about it), then the Left should be incredibly happy with the Right using it and shooting itself in the foot. They shouldn’t be using it themselves, as that would take the edge off.

What we hear from the Kossacks (and, Lord help me, I knew Kos in college before he went to law school and believed he was a thoughtful and intelligent young man) is the apocalyptic view of the True Believers that brooks no opposition. Thus they believe that anything they do is justified because it is helping prevent the Anti-Christ-types take over.

Personally, I think a great deal of this is a result of the 2000 election and Gore’s refusal not only to concede but to stop short of SCOTUS.

Ah, well.

Oh, by the way...Not only has Obama not had a convention bounce, according to that CNN poll conducted 8/29-31, McCain has caught Obama. This was a poll of registered voters, which isn’t as reliable as one of likely voters.

McCain thisclose going into his convention, with the wind at his back, as it were. The Obama camp should be in full-throated panic by now.

Seriously? This is what the Dems think?

It’s what they need to think. The alternative is too ghastly to allow themselves to contemplate.

Comparing something to NASCAR is a dig??? And you claim to live in the south?
