And it’s the Republicans who are cynical?
Posted by: McQ on Friday, September 05, 2008

At least that's been the charge against the McCain campaign for picking Sarah Palin for VP. And it stood there basically unchallenged until she personally blew it away Wednesday night with her speech.

Suddenly, women who weren't really necessary or important to the ticket (see Dem VP pick and the dissing of 18 million votes) are vital:
Senator Barack Obama will increasingly lean on prominent Democratic women to undercut Gov. Sarah Palin and Senator John McCain, dispatching Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton to Florida on Monday and bolstering his plan to deploy female surrogates to battleground states, Obama advisers said Thursday.
Now who is cynical? It is clear Palin was a hit. TV numbers have been revised up with the addition of PBS and it is estimated 40 million watched the Palin speech. Why the cynical deployment of women surrogates? Because that number is very close to the number who viewed Obama's speech.

Obviously a good number of people watched the speech because they had no idea who Sarah Palin was. And, given the pernicious and vicious press coverage she and her family had received over the week, they wanted to see if she had three eyes and horns. My guess is what they saw and heard blew away all the negativity the press had heaped on her over the preceding days. They heard a strong and poised young woman, who has real accomplishments, lay them out in front of the nation with authenticity, conviction and humor.

And that has panicked the Dems. The harridans have emerged. Gloria Steinam has written a piece you could spend a week fisking, but it is the female version of calling a black person an "Uncle Tom" (remember the Clarence Thomas hearings?). Steinam's criticism of Palin is a blatant indulgence in hypocrisy where Steinam declares that a successful woman cannot really emerge on the right because they are slaves of the patriarchy.

Thinking people realize that's nonsense:
"Obviously," said Charlotte Allen, a contributing editor at the Manhattan Institute, a conservative think tank, "there's a double standard. Conservative women are given no quarter. They're considered an outrage to their sex."
Yet there she is, 40 million saw her, and other than hardcore fems of Steinem's persuasion, middle America is very unlikely to buy into the tortured logic Steinem uses to push her point.

But they persist:
A spokeswoman for the National Organization for Women, noting Palin’s opposition to abortion rights and support of other parts of the social conservative agenda, told Politico, “She's more a conservative man than she is a woman on women's issues. Very disappointing."
Of course this is the same organization that marginalized itself when it stood mute while Bill Clinton ran roughshod over a series of women he was accused of approaching, seducing or raping.

So the cynical deployment of women surrogates, none of whom was obviously good enough to make the Dem ticket, but are now vital to neutralizing the Republican ticket, will be interesting to watch. And unless I miss my guess, such a deployment is going to be largely ineffective.

I can't tell you how much I'd enjoy the irony of that so-called "glass ceiling" being shattered by the female version of an "Uncle Tom". Seeing the resulting paroxysms among the politically acceptable women on the left would most enjoyable.

Why is it that women on the far left think that they have sole authority to determine which sides of the issues constitute women’s issues? Palin and the millions like her, as women, can determine for themselves what issues are important to them as women - thus women’s issues. This is just driving NOW crazy.

The mixing of the metaphors alone makes it worth it!

I don’t know about that. According to the article, PBS added 3.9 million to Palin’s previous 37.2 million, but also added 4 million to Barack Obama’s 38.4 million, which would put him up to 42.4 million. PBS was only sampling big cities, though, so who knows.

I’m not sure it’s possible to construct a single sentence that does a better job of demonstrating the intellectual bankruptcy of identity politics than this one.

Of course it does - and leave it to me, I can mix ’em with the best of ’em. But I did want to link the treatment of blacks and women by the Dems in some way, and that seemed to make the point best.

But you have a point and I’ve edited it to make that clearer.

Yup - I reread the article a little closer and saw the addition of PBS to the Obama totals and revised the post. Thanks.

I’m just waiting for the pundits to start asking what it would have been like to have Hiliary and Sarah as the POTUS nominees.

It figures.

Obama and Biden are neither man enough to take on Sarahcuda head on - they have to hide behind skirts to do their dirty work

Many of my neighbors (still clinging to at least their religion here in Pennsylvania) have been looking for months to find ... "none of the above"

My wife, a life long Democrat, dislikes both Obama and McCain but did sit through the Palin and McCain speeches. She thinks Palin is historic .. Obama just another politician.

I think for many, Palin is new .. she is "none of the above".

From Steinem’s article:
Selecting Sarah Palin, who was touted all summer by Rush Limbaugh ...
Oh, well, if Rush likes her, she must be an Uncle Tom.

(Is anyone else shocked that 3.9 million people watched PBS?)

I’m not sure that I’d call her a "young woman". She’s in her 40’s, and has a 17 year old daughter. Her daughter I would consider a "young woman"...

I guess it’s just a perspective thing.

It always amuses me when people who cannot even think of Rush Limbaugh without becoming nauseous claim to know everything he says, as if they listen to every minute of his show.

Yup - I’m about 16 years older than her, so she’s young in my book.

Additionally, in national politics, she’s considered to be "young". Biden and McCain are more the norm.

Given that NOW is essentially a different, less focused version of NARAL, I wonder how they justify their existence to their donors.

Ditto x2. I’ve wondered the same thing. If 40+ years of liberal policies have done nothing to lift you up, and in fact have been proven to do nothing but grind you down, don’t you think maybe it’s time to give the other side a closer look? You know, the side that has fought for you and beside you - figuratively and literally - since about 1861 or so?

I don’t get it.

Even after McCain’s speech, discussion over Palin remains dominant.

It’ll be interesting to see how long that lasts.

Cheers.

The good news out of the Palin selection is that NOW is D-E-A-D. Dead as a doornail.

The next time they holler about anything, this needs to get tossed back right into the faces.

Damn hypocrites.

Speaking of Steinem...

Why They Hate Her
Sarah Palin is a smart missile aimed at the heart of the left.
by Jeffrey Bell
09/15/2008, Volume 014, Issue 01

http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/015/534rlysq.asp

Chris Matthews calls Pat Buchanan and Palin-defending conservatives "so 1957", but has never called Steinem and friends so 1968.

The premise of the above article is that Ms. Steinem has the most to lose from an America with a professionally successful Mrs. Palin.
