Opting for the Inflammatory but less likely interpretation
Posted by: McQ on Friday, September 12, 2008

Anne Kornblut's article in the WaPo attempts to claim, in the headline to the article, that "Palin Links Iraq to Sept. 11 In Talk to Troops in Alaska".
Gov. Sarah Palin linked the war in Iraq with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, telling an Iraq-bound brigade of soldiers that included her son that they would "defend the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans."
So have we been fighting al Qaeda in Iraq for, what, 5 years?

Was it al Qaeda who attacked us on 9/11?

Are we defending "innocent [Iraqis]" from remnants of al Qaeda in Iraq?

Now watch this waffle as she apparently understands but downplays the point I just made instead opting for the less supportable but more inflammatory interpretation:
The idea that the Iraqi government under Saddam Hussein helped al-Qaeda plan the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, a view once promoted by Bush administration officials, has since been rejected even by the president himself. But it is widely agreed that militants allied with al-Qaeda have taken root in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion.
Yes, Ms. Kornblut and in the present, while speaking at a deployment ceremony for a unit going to Iraq, it seems very likely she was pointing to the present situation (AQ in Iraq) as it applies to 9/11 vs. the less likely interpretation that she was referring to Saddam who has been gone for 5 years.

Your objective press at work.

I believe that there is no "l" in her name.

This bitch has gotten me so mad that I’m gonna do something I haven’t done in two decades .. send a check to a politician .. and a politician I really didn’t like at the beginning of this primary season, at that.

Go McCain — Palin

I’m really starting to wonder just how far the MSM will go to rig this election. In ’04, they tried the "fake but accurate" memoes. That didn’t work because whoever gave the forgeries to Rather was too stupid to make them look authentic, and Rather published them soon enough before the election to give people time to look at them and reveal them as phonies.

This time...

Virtually the entire MSM seems to be in the tank for Obama, or at least filled with psychotic hatred of Sarah Palin. What WOULDN’T they do to get her?

I feel sorry for Track Palin and his outfit. Imagine having swarms of bloodsucking journos following them everywhere, hoping for the money shot of his dead body in a wrecked Stryker so they can get bombard his grieving mother with more inane questions about the Bush Doctrine, Iraq, and the Will of God.

They only hate Sarah ’cause she is a threat to their golden boy.

It’s really a problem for the media when former Hiliary suppoerter start sounding like Republicans in regard to the media.

docjim: I think part of it is also that there are a large number of people who simply never, in their mental activities regarding Iraq, got past "Bush sneakily implied* that it was Hussein behind 9/11 so anything related to both means that!".

Or who - rather like Taranto mocks the Times for - never did want get the news that "al Quaeda In Iraq" is in some way related to "al Quaeda", or think that it somehow doesn’t count because of the invasion. Somehow. The linkage here isn’t real clear.

* Of course, they will usually admit if pressed that the President never actually said it, and if faced with quotes and more pressure they will often even admit that he justified the invasion of Iraq on a variety of grounds (which they will of course dismiss as invalid or insufficient, but that’s not hte point), not one of which was "because he did 9/11".

But "A lot of people believed that Hussein was responsible - so it’s the President’s fault they believe that, because it made getting the war easier. Qui Bono, eh?".

I wish I was making this kind of logic up.
