This stuff just can't be made up.

Former NY mayor Ed Koch was on CNN with Carol Costello when he resorted to fear-mongering while denouncing Sarah Palin.

Costello asked for an example of what scared him. This from a description in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Koch cited what he said was a New York Times report that Palin “went to the library in the town of which she was mayor and she told the librarian she’d like to have certain books censored.”

When Costello protested that CNN had checked the allegation and determined it was false, Koch made it clear he trusted the newspaper more than the cable channel, saying “you’re not better than The New York Times.”

That led to a brief but spirited argument, with Koch insisting the story was true until Costello changed the subject.

Koch got the last laugh. After the interview, Costello returned to the air to acknowledge “it is true that she did ask the librarian to do it. But, the librarian refused to do that and Gov. Palin did not order the librarian to ban any of those books.”
Two points. If you come in behind the NY Times in reliability, you are indeed the dregs. And that's because the story which Koch says was in the NYT is absolutely false, as is the CNN version. Factcheck.org flatly debunked the whole myth with an explanation bluntly entitled "Not a Book Burner".

But for Ed Koch, "the NYT said it, I believe it and that settles it" seems to be his philosophy. It is also a very good reason to completely dismiss his opinion.

This election cycle, all the media is partisan. It’s just a matter of degree.
The journalism schools should be proud .. they’ve destroyed their craft.

Ed is just following the logic of Joseph Pulitzer who said something like "If it ain’t in the papes it didn’t happen" (I am vaguely recalling the Broadway show "Newsies" here). So, logically, if it IS in the "papes" it happened.
