Sarah Palin brought one unusual accessory to the Alaska Governor's mansion after moving in last year: A tanning bed.

Al Giordano's NarcoNews first reported that Palin had the apparatus installed in the mansion in Juneau, and a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, Roger Wetherell, confirmed the account to Politico.

"She paid for it with her own money," Wetherell said in an email.

OMG! She paid for it with her own money! What a scandal!

So other than a vanity aspect could there be a good reason to have such a device? Well, yes:

While getting a tan is the first benefit most people think of, in reality, there are other benefits of tanning beds that you might not have considered. For example, in the past few years, new scientific research has been conducted whereby it has been identified that exposure to UV rays actually helps the body create a natural supply of Vitamin D.

Since many unfortunate diseases are linked directly to Vitamin D deficiencies to include both osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, using a tanning bed to increase these vitamin levels is a huge benefit. In addition to strengthening bone, Vitamin D is also essential for the prevention of many forms of cancer to include prostate, colon, and breast.

And what is the main source of the beneficial UV rays that help create that natural supply of Vitamin D?

The sun, of course.

But:

In Barrow, the northernmost village in the state, there is no daylight for 64 days in the heart of the winter. The sun does not rise above the horizon.

So a used tanning bed (which isn't very expensive) may be very useful in the dark winters where exposure to the sun may be limited not only by limited daylight but by extreme cold temperatures couldn't it?

Ben Smith acknowledges that but:

It does get awful dark up there in Alaska, but health authorities like the American Cancer Society generally frown on tanning beds as cancer risks.

Guess what else the American Cancer Society generally frowns on Ben - too much exposure to the sun. Like anything, if done properly, a tanning bed can be used beneficially. Especially in those cold dark days when you couldn't get the healthy exposure to the sun you need even if you wanted it.

But hey, Alaska's just like Florida so we shouldn't assume there may be a good reason for something like a used tanning bed, should we?

Well, that tears it!

As a Christian conservative who is concerned about skin cancer, I do not feel that I can give my vote to Sarah Palin. I have always supported the Republican Party, but the reckless choice of the unqualified Sarah Palin, whose use of a tanning bed will encourage millions of American women to also engage in this risky behavior, has convinced me that the GOP no longer supports my conservative Christian values. That I’ve always had. Like when I voted for Reagan both times. So I will not be voting for the GOP this November and I encourage all my life-long Christian conservative friends not to vote for this reckless and unqualified and lying ticket.
