Iraq: more reconciliation news
Posted by: McQ on Thursday, October 02, 2008

This has been an issue that has kept sectarian tensions high in Iraq. It too now seems to have resolved itself in the way the Sunnis hoped it would:
Iraq's government took command Wednesday of thousands of U.S.-backed, mostly Sunni fighters who turned against al-Qaeda. The Shiite-dominated government pledged to integrate the fighters into public life for their help in quelling violence.

About 100,000 fighters, known as Sons of Iraq or Awakening Councils, had been under U.S. military supervision and were paid by the United States for the past two years. The first group will get the first payments from Iraq next month.

"The transition will be paced as conditions allow so that security can be maintained," U.S. military spokesman Capt. Charles Calio said. He said the Sunni fighters "play a significant role in improving and maintaining security throughout the country."
These are the guys that were first known as "Concerned Local Citizens" and later as "Sons of Iraq". They were a critical part of the success in rejecting al Qaeda during the "Awakening" and then securing villages, towns and cities as the Awakening spread.

Getting them under the GoI's control and pay has been something that the US has been working very hard to accomplish. The Shi'te dominated government has not been particularly eager to include them or pick up the tab for them until now. This will go a long way toward helping reconciliation and keeping the Awakening alive and well.

Slowly but surely.

See, it is all going according to Scott Erb’s plan (no doubt Petreas was influenced by Erb’s blog).

You mocked Erb, now the egg is on you.
