I’ve seen this story reported that Somali had authorized the Russians, who have a ship on the way. Although, I sometimes wonder if the Ukrainians really want a Russian ship intervening on their behalf. |

Ya know, an airstrike would be just the thing. Make a show of sinking the thing, with all pirate hands aboard as an example. |

Has anybody asked about whether the pirates can be represented in US court? We need to make sure that the Navy reads ’em their Miranda rights, too. Has the ACLU volunteered to represent the pirates?

McQ - Part of our Navy’s mission is to protect vital trade and supply routes. This certainly qualifies. Now that Somalia has okayed it, its time to take the pirates to task and clear the seas in this area.
My, how 19th century of you! I don’t think that will pass the global test. Anyway, the US doesn’t need to be bullying other people or trying to impose its will on them. Freedom of the seas can’t be imposed by force. The insurgents on that ship aren’t a threat to the United States. This is all about oil. You wouldn’t feel this way if the pirates weren’t black. Yadda-yadda-yadda.
(sorry; I agree that the Navy needs to clean them out. Just feeling very sarcastic today) |

Ya know, an airstrike would be just the thing. Make a show of sinking the thing, with all pirate hands aboard as an example. Yeah but, even though they don’t get equal billing with the tanks and weapons, there’s crew aboard being held hostage by the 50-some pirates:Most of the 20 crewmembers are Ukrainian or Latvian, and one Russian has died, possibly of illness. Still, you’re not the only one recommending destruction of the ship and cargo:Somali Islamist militants urged the pirates to destroy the cargo and the vessel if no ransom is paid, while admitting that they would be interested in acquiring the arms.
"If they do not get the money they are demanding, we call on them to either burn down the ship and its arms or sink it," Sheikh Mukhtar Robow, a spokesman for the hardline Shabab movement, told AFP in an interview. |

My guess is someone will take the lead (US? SEALS?) and we’ll have a nice little night time operation take place in the next day or two. Awesome. I can’t wait until Call of Duty 5 comes out for Xbox360. Wait, you mean this is for real? |

In all this excitement, don’t forget the Straits of Malacca and adjacent waters, where piracy is just as bad, if not worse, than off Somalia, and may have some Chinese backing |

"Who is towing the Russian ship?"
LOL. Tsu Shima recidivus.
" Most of the 20 crewmembers are Ukrainian or Latvian, and one Russian has died, possibly of illness."
20 Ukrainian/Latvian and 1 Russian, eh? Illness, eh? Well, I guess that’s their story and they are sticking to it. |
