A word about "Associations" and their political worth (UPDATE)
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, October 14, 2008

As should be obvious by now, just claiming that a politician was "associated" with someone isn't resonating with undecided voters.

As Jennifer Rubin points out at Commentary, it has to be taken one step further and tied to actions and activities surrounding that association.

So the way to tie Ayers to Obama isn't necessarily to make a big point about his past and move on, it is to make that point and then tie the association to this guy with something that an undecided voter can't ignore.

David Freddoso does that:
As chairman of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, an educational reform project that Ayers founded, Obama presided over a waste of $160 million in donors’ money. The project, under his leadership, failed to improve student achievement in the 210 Chicago schools where it operated, according to the Annenberg Challenge’s final report. And to this day, that project is Obama’s only significant executive experience.

Obama’s legislative leadership was similar, a case study in wasting other people’s money. In Springfield, Obama wrote letters from his public position to get Rezko $14 million for his slum-development enterprise. Obama co-sponsored several pieces of housing legislation favorable to Rezko and other slum-developers, giving them hundreds of millions in subsidies and other tax and regulatory advantages. They in turn funneled money to Obama’s campaigns and then let their buildings deteriorate, even turning off the heat on their tenants during the winter. By his own account, Obama never bothered to follow up on how the money was spent, but the record shows that he worked in every legislative session to provide more for his developer friends.
So there are two concrete examples of his associations with, to be kind, "marginal characters" and the results of those associations.

And if you'd like a third, Freddoso has another:
The client, Robert Blackwell, had just paid Obama $112,000 in his capacity as a private attorney for one of his corporations. State Senator Obama and [aide Dan] Shomon then helped Blackwell obtain $320,000 in state tourism grants to hold ping-pong tournaments.
Ping-pong tournaments? Don't you think potential voters would be interested in the fact that Obama, the consummate Chicago pol, used his office to spend tax dollars on ping-pong tournaments and subsidizing slumlords? Yet he's claiming to have the plan on taxation and spending not to mention being an advocate for the poor and middle class.

Actions v. words.

And Ayers? Working with Ayers, he wasted millions of dollars of donated money on a radical agenda and ideas which had absolutely no impact whatsoever on the improvement of Chicago schools. None. Yet he's claiming he has the answers to our education problems.

Action v. words.

Obama's glib exterior and an effective campaign crew have managed, to this point, to divert attention away from all of this.

But if you tie all the "associations" together in a meaningful way (and you can tie Reverend Wright up in all of this because Trinity also benefited financially through Barack Obama) you defeat their spin and create a narrative that points to a very different Barack Obama than the one that has been manufactured. This guy is just like every other Chicago politician to come down the pike, except he's even further to the left than most.

Character? He obviously bought into the Ayers revolutionary doctrine about schools if you take the time to read about some of the "projects" the millions of dollars were wasted on. And the rest, Rezko and Blackwell for instance, were the usual political tit for tat. There's also the nice little grant Michelle Obama's promotion at work seems to have earned her employer.

Then there's ACORN. Are we beginning to see a pattern here?

This "new politics" guy is so mired in corruption and old machine style politics it is incredible and yet no one is doing the job of tying it all together and presenting it as a package.

Rubin, I think, hits on the "why" when speaking of McCain:
One suspects he never had his heart in the effort that was needed: a systematic and sustained effort to reveal Obama as a Leftist and a craven product of machine politics.
It is all there - all that needs to be done is have it presented in a coherent, well-documented package to create the doubts necessary to change the present flow of the election - that is if McCain has the onions to do so.

UPDATE: Speaking of an Ayers and Wright connection, Stanley Kurtz lays it all out there for everyone who is interested in seeing the dots connected. He concludes:
However he may seek to deny it, all evidence points to the fact that, from his position as board chair of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, Barack Obama knowingly and persistently funded an educational project that shared the extremist and anti-American philosophy of Jeremiah Wright. The Wright affair was no fluke. It’s time for McCain to say so.

It goes against common sense that Ayers would make Obama head of CAC and later kick start Obama’s political career if Obama wasn’t the type of politician Ayers wanted running things.

Essentially, Obama was sponsered by an anti-American terrorist and communist. He was only sponsered because the sponser believed Obama would push the country in the desired direction.

either Obama tricked Ayers, or else Ayers is getting what he wants. The former isn’t likely.

The ’association’ label is apropos; however, the Ayers’ connection with Obama is even more disturbing. Putting aside the fact that Ayers is a committed terrorist, his principal focus since his bombing days has been to ’radicalize’ the education system. Specifically, his efforts are directed towards indoctrinating future educators, and by extension their students, with such ideas that the US is an oppressive, militaristic and tyrannical country. That is the real danger from an Obama presidency.

Has Obama ever talked about what he learned from the Annenburg thing?

If I ever heard him say, we funded these things and this is what we found out... that this tended to improve performance by these measures (heck, I’d take attendance rates as proof of improvement) and that this thing we thought would work, didn’t, I’d forgive him that "association."

Let me get this straight: AT THIS VERY MOMENT, THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT IS NATIONALIZING OUR BANKING SYSTEM, yet you choose to write about this Ayers nonsense? If this were happening under President Obama, you’d be expressing your hostile opinions vociferously and relentlessly, probably threatening to bear arms. But since it’s being done by a Republican president, well . . . whatever.

Abject partisanship. Shameful.

I thought you were done commenting here Shaughennessy.

What’s obvious however is you, like a lot of leftards, selectively read this blog. Or perhaps you’re like a goose and wake up in a new world every day. Regardless - and unsurprisingly - you’ve managed to miss all of this and this.

But thanks for stopping by and leaving your bilious suggestion for what should be written about at this particular moment.

Hey, I know - why don’t you start a blog? You know, actually do something, lay something out there for other people to consider and criticize. I’m sure readers here will be glad to stop by now and again and tell you what you should be writing about.

Deal?

Yeah, it isn’t like the Democrats voted for the bailout, or anything . . .

No, we should shut up about Ayers, forget that Obama sued to further the financial mess back in the 90s, and vote for Obama, right?

I guess if they would suspend the political campaigns, we could stop posting about topics relevant to the political campaign.

But alas, like the President, many of us have to multi-task.

I for one am awestruck and envious that McQ can crank out as many posts as he does.

All David needs to do now is say "good DAY sir!!!" as he’s slamming the door on his way out...

I think this constant bringing up Obama’s ancient past (okay, with Wright, that was pretty much like just last week, but you get my point) is totally unfair. It just makes him look like some radical socialist. And it’s clear from his voting record that he’s not. I bet he just hangs out with these people to convert them to libertarianism.

When you look at the entire Obama package, what you really see a chameleon, a changeling, one who alters his appearance or shape in order to fit in. Obama found himself in Chicago, and in order to fit in and prosper, he had to run around with the crowd that would get him jump started so that he could achieve something - it did not matter what, he just needed to get there. So, like a chameleon, he alterred his hue, changed his colors - if there was any change really needed given his life experiences to date - and blended into the atmosphere that was Chicago politics. And just like a chameleon, he is not a leader. He is one that blends in well with his surroundings - he does as Ayres directs as CEO of the Annenberg Foundation, he votes present in the Illinois State Legislature until taken under the wing of a senior legislator in his last term to "accomplish" something, he wonders the halls of the US Senate acting officious and voting along with the Democratic herd.

The closest thing he has ever done to accomplishing anything on his own was his stance concerning the Iraq war. But even that was chameleon-like. Given the people who surrounded him, could he have chosen any other course of action?

It’s funny to see the disintegration of the right in the face of almost certain defeat. Rather than deal with the larger picture, it’s fixation on associations, complex attempts to claim this matters, and then a fixation on minor things like ACORN (which is similar to how the Democrats point to GOP suppression efforts). The fact is this is what it likes when one side is losing, and wants to claim it’s unfair. Blame the media. Fixate on small things. Bitterly denounce the electorate for not seeing the obvious. Sadly, I think a lot of people believe their narrative and think Obama is some kind of terrorist coddling socialist who is using fraud to steal an election. It is the mirror image of BDS, similar elements, and similarly misguided. But hey, that’s all they have. I don’t think the "right" realizes how much they look like those aspects of the "left" they ridiculed for years. It’s good entertainment, I guess.

The impiortant thing is, Obama has his heart in the right place. That’s why he sued, so more poor people could own homes . . .

Right, the liberal bias of the media is just something cooked up this year to explain away the overwhelmingly favorable coverage that Obama is receiving.

Nope, never been talked about or discussed, evah.

And I guess the fact that many states are looking into the fraudulent practices of ACORN, is just another wight wing conspiracy fantasy.

And I guess the fact that an Obama/Pelosi/Reid triumvirate would see the most liberal leaders of the government, EVAH, is nothing that conservatives, or libertarians ought to be worried about.

Don, Obama is way ahead! Look at the Real Clear Politics poll site and election map! It’s all but over. Sure, McCain could come back, but NOT if he focuses on ACORN and Ayres! And those who are losing always blame media bias. It’s easier than realizing that Obama is connecting with voters much like Reagan did. Reagan got great press coverage too — something people seem to forget. He did that because he knew how to use the media, and Obama is Reaganesque in that way. ACORN isn’t connected to the Obama campaign, it’s a distraction, with minor problems (it seems mostly workers trying to make money by being lazy) that are based on how that organization is run. To tie it or Ayres to Obama smells of desperation.

But some good news: if Obama does win, and the Democrats gain in the House and Senate as expected, the GOP will come back big in 2010. Politics goes in phases. Given that the Bush Administration gave you a big government social engineering experiment in Iraq, and promoted a massively socialized financial sector just this month, perhaps you should consider the fact that maybe the Democrats are the ones that can actually bring fiscal discipline. Sort of an "only Nixon could go to China" thing. (In Europe parties on the left have more success cutting spending and even taxes than parties on the right). So life goes on.

BTW, I made similar arguments to those angry about Gore’s loss in 2000. Elections come and go, and somehow the system adapts. Obama hasn’t won yet, but with the McCain campaign in dissarray, Obama buying half hour TV spots in prime time and still awash with funds, and the economy in bad shape, I think McCain would need to hire Frank Reich as his campaign manager to have a chance at a comeback (Buffalo Bills fans know what I’m talking about). OK, too much to do, back to no-comment mode for awhile.

(CBS) Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is entering the third and final presidential debate Wednesday with a wide lead over Republican rival John McCain nationally, a new CBS News/New York Times poll shows.

The Obama-Biden ticket now leads the McCain-Palin ticket 53 percent to 39 percent among likely voters, a 14-point margin. One week ago, prior to the Town Hall debate that uncommitted voters saw as a win for Obama, that margin was just three points.

Among independents who are likely voters - a group that has swung back and forth between McCain and Obama over the course of the campaign - the Democratic ticket now leads by 18 points. McCain led among independents last week.

McCain’s campaign strategy may be hurting hurt him: Twenty-one percent of voters say their opinion of the Republican has changed for the worse in the last few weeks. The top two reasons cited for the change of heart are McCain’s attacks on Obama and his choice of Sarah Palin as running mate.

I agree that Acorn/Ayers are unlikely to be an effective McCain argument at this point.

The media is biased, however. That’s just something a Republican has to overcome.

Well, Clinton did pass welfare reform, but Obama ain’t Clinton and isn’t likely to do anything similar. He’s more likely to do the bad Clinton stuff, you know, what lead into the financial crisis in the first place.

Erb,

Let’s assume Obama wins despite McCain a hypothetical "perfect" campaign.

I would still be interested in Obama’s Ayers connection, maybe even MORE SO, because Obama would then be president and it would be important to know where he is coming from.

and about ACORN, I think that most of the fraud is done by the hustlers on ths street trying to make some money, but I have two or three questions about this organization:

1. Who is paying for it? If its Dems paying for it, I have no problem with them being defrauded. If ACORN is considered "non-partisan" and somehow gets Federal funds, then, I do have a problem with it.

2. Assuming its the Dems paying for the voter drives, why are they still supporting this organization if they are getting ripped off? Why are they trying to get it money in the financial bailout bill? I suspect they must get some advantage out of it. A corollary is why do they oppose voter ID if fraud is "no big deal." Makes no sense.

I also agree that Ayers/ACORN will not help McCain enough to win, but I am not sure what McCain could do to swing the public into supporting a Republican after the financial crisis, especially in this media environment.

That said, it will still help him in some amount and perhaps coupled with other issues, could help him to win. You don’t throw away your pistol because what you really need is a bazooka, but you don’t have one.

I understand why wingnuts are using Ayers at this point. What else do they have? The problem is that they don’t have a point. They say that because Obama chose to hang out with Ayers, he has bad judgment that shows he can’t be president. But that is a hard argument to make. First of all, it’s weird. It’s collateral and requires Americans to invest a lot of energy in determining the nature of the relationship. That takes work.

More to the point, accusing a politician of having had associations with "bad" people is like accusing chocolate of tasting good.

Here’s my advice to wingnuts: Please spend more time on Ayers. It’s working.

Thanks.

Rather than deal with the larger picture
I am looking at a litany of other posts here on this blog that looks at and discusses the war, the economy, the bailout, health care, foreign policy and taxes. Looks to me like McQ and company are spending a whole lot of time talking and discussing the issues of the day. Some of the issues are not seen anywhere but in this media. I don’t see much coming out of you except whining.
a fixation on minor things like ACORN
So voter fraud is not a concern to you? You don’t have a problem with someone mailing in 500 absentee ballots under the name of Mickey Mouse for one candidate/party or another? I really think you would be screaming bloody murder had the accusations been directed at a Republican leaning entity.
perhaps you should consider the fact that maybe the Democrats are the ones that can actually bring fiscal discipline. (emphasis mine)
I don’t suppose you ever heard of the term PayGo? It seems your definition of "fact" does not quite come close to my own.
Sadly, I think a lot of people believe their narrative and think Obama is some kind of terrorist coddling socialist who is using fraud to steal an election.
Sadly, I think some self-righteous professor from some back water college in Maine is an Obama apologist, with nothing going for him but disdain for anyone who voices a contrary opinion.

Only a Democrat would believe that voting fraud is a "minor thing". The difference between Republicans and Democrats worrying about stolen elections is that Democrats have a history dating back to Tammany Hall of actually stealing elections.

-The motor voter law has done nothing but increase fraud and confusion regarding the voter rolls.

-Democrats stole the Washington State gubernatorial election in 2004 by counting over 600 King County provisional ballots that were never verified and miraculously finding additional votes 4 months after the election.

- Democrats stole Wisconsin by committing fraud in Milwaukee in 2000 and 2004 where 10,000 provisional ballots were cast by people listing fake addresses and there were over 4,000 more votes cast in Milwaukee than the number of voters on the voter rolls. John Kerry won Wisconsin by 11,384 votes.

- Democrats committed massive voter fraud in East St. Louis, Illinois in 2004.

- In California’s Orange County in 1996, Democrat Loretta Sanchez won by a little over 900 votes and an INS investigation estimated that over 4,000 illegal immigrants voted in that congressional race. Do you think they voted for Sanchez (who right before the election began using her hispanic maiden name after a decade of using her anglican married surname) or B-1 Bob Dornan? An organization called Hermandad Nacional Mexicana was registering illegals and encouraging them to vote.

- ACORN has committed registraton fraud in Kansas City, Cleveland and Seattle in 2004

-Democrats stole the 2002 Senate election in New Jersey when the majority Democrat state Supreme Court allowed Frank Lautenberg to replace Robert Torricelli who was trailing Republican Douglas Forrester by 15 points due to the fact that Torricelli was and is a criminal. Despite the fact that Torricelli was never indicted or incapacitated in any way (if you don’t count moral incapacitation), the Dem. Supreme court allowed Lautenberg to be subsituted on the ballot after the state’s statutorily mandated deadline.

Erb, you need the ability to distinguish between that which is real and that which is just imaginary. Democrats’ claims of voter intimidation are false and their cases against voter ID laws are ginned up. Their malignant narcisissm leads them to a means-justified-by-the-end philosophy about everything. Democrats steal elections and my concern about that fact is actually concern about our democracy. I understand why Democrats want to keep the current system intact. Without voter fraud and media bias, they couldn’t win more than 25%-30% of the popular vote.

It’s not clear how invalid registrations are GOOD for the poor and/or non-white folks and/or immigrants, but....I guess they must be since that seems to be the way the argument is always framed when the issue comes up.

I’m sure Peed-row has an answer though, he always does.

What is currently happening regarding Acorn has established a pattern of rampant fraud. Why is the lying, cheating and stealing to win this election by Obama being swept under the rug and catagorized as "isolated incidents" by the media. Well, the truth, as we see it now with Acorn, elections are not stolen by isolated incidents, it is rampant and systematic fraud...it is a conspiracy to decieve, cheat and steal. It appears that the Obama "Voter Fraud" has been going on since the Democratic Caucus. Please view the below videos when you have time from the web site "WE WILL NOT BE SILECED.

Additionally, there are ALARMING things that are occurring right now not being covered by the media. One huge concern is Obama’s status as a natural born citizen.
