I dunno, Bruce. You’re right he’s talking about Democrats, but I wonder. Seems to me this is an obvious play for White Guilt, since he knows such things work for Democrats.
But you know, it says something else, too. Murtha is apparently reacting to polling data the rest of us are not seeing, that suggests Obama’s in trouble... trouble enough that someone Murtha owes a political favor to, has decided it’s worth it to get Murtha to risk his seat, to employ these tactics.

I grew up in Western PA, and Murtha is my congressman. While I think it’s kind of stupid for a politician to make comments like this about his constituents, there is an element of truth. It’s still a very white dominant area and many people can go years never interacting with people of other races. They only hear about other races on the news, which is always negative, like a shooting up in some Pittsburgh ghetto. That said, racist might not even be the best word; it might be simply lack of understanding, experience, or not seeing enough contrary evidence to the negative stereotypes that are hand delivered to them from the media, Hollywood, or even BET. That said, most have enough common sense and decency not to bring a stuffed monkey Obama effigy to a campaign rally. Combine that with people still thinking he’s a Muslim, Arab, or even a terrorist, and you’ve got even more people making ill-informed decisions.
I’m hoping for a day where candidates will be judged on there, well, politics. What a concept, eh? Not their race, gender, religion, or whether or not they are wearing a "Made in China" American flag lapel pin, but their actual stances on issues. A guy can dream. |

His opponent is having a field day with this.According to an article published by the Post-Gazette, Murtha made the following statements to reporters regarding Barack Obama’s prospects the upcoming presidential contest: “There’s no question Western Pennsylvania is a racist area.” Murtha would make similar comments to the Pittsburgh-Tribune Review saying, “Obama has got the problem of the racist issue in Western Pennsylvania.”
Russell responded saying, “Once again Mr. Murtha is using the prestige and platform of public office to make wild, reckless statements about the people he represents in Congress.” Adding, “Because the people of Western Pennsylvania aren’t wholeheartedly embracing Barack Obama’s values and positions on issues like the right-to-life, taxes and the 2nd Amendment doesn’t makes us racist. That’s the cheapest of cheap shots." |
