An alternate explanation
Posted by: McQ on Saturday, October 18, 2008

Sean Quinn at FiveThirtyEight (a good site, btw) offers the following anecdote and explanation:
So a canvasser goes to a woman's door in Washington, Pennsylvania. Knocks. Woman answers. Knocker asks who she's planning to vote for. She isn't sure, has to ask her husband who she's voting for. Husband is off in another room watching some game. Canvasser hears him yell back, "We're votin' for the n***er!"

Woman turns back to canvasser, and says brightly and matter of factly: "We're voting for the n***er."

In this economy, racism is officially a luxury. How is John McCain going to win if he can't win those voters? John Murtha's "racist" western Pennsylvania district, where this story takes place, is some of the roughest turf in the nation. But Barack Obama is on the ground and making inroads due to unusually strong organizing leadership.
Is he really? Or are we just redefining "yellow dog Democrat?"

if you think that is funny check this.

not only can al jez do good propaganda in the middle east to stoke the fires of of the middle east. they can come over here and have limitless propaganda to solidify the hate america forces on the arab street. im sure all the stations are drooling to show how much americans hate muslims on their local networks.

Wouldn’t that example (did John Murtha suggest this) argue against taking support for Obama in Western Pennsylvania. I see as biasing thw whole argument that mr. 538 is trying to make. It’s not that he’s black, its the fact that he’s an inexperienced radical with Islamist, Marxist, and even organized crime ties (Rezko & Giannoleas).

There’s been a lot of crap flung around this season, but this "story" is nothing but fabrication. Whoever posted it is a moron.

Pretty funny story, but apocryphal. I note that Quinn refers to it as a story, not an anecdote. I have a couple of good stories, too.

Well, I heard this story about McCain, Obama, a priest and a Boy Scout on a plane about to crash...

Of course to wingnuts, the question of who you are voting for is a "gotcha" question.

I see nothing unusual about that. The Democrats have always been the party of racists. My old southern yellow dog Democrat Uncles voted for some of the slimiest far left radicals, and they were racist to the core. They always looked at welfare and social programs as hush money to keep the coloreds quite.

So, they’re voting for the nutter. Not a good choice.

Well, if the rest of the article is as fact based as one throw-away "fact", it’s basically been dry-labbed (hard-science and engineering majors will know of which I speak).

The article (covering Michelle’s speech) talks about the Soldier’s and Sailor’s Memorial Hall "on the Pitt campus". It’s not. It was built before the turn of the last century by the GAR, and ran by them for years, and finally turned over to a non-profit corporation which is mainly supported by tax dollars from Allegheny County. It’s right across the street from the Student Union and dorms, but it is not part of the University.

What does this say about the article? That it’s easy to embroider the narrative with plausible sounding details - that are false - to add a layer of reality to what is basically a guess: that a) large numbers of WPa voters are racist, but b) going to vote for Obama anyway.

a) is disputable - there is a contigent of racists there, but a very small number and no worse than many other areas of the country, and b) is just as disputable. The relatives I have there are all clingy gun owners, and even the one who is a local politician (D) is not going to vote for the former Joyce Foundation director.
