Resorting to Form
Posted by: McQ on Monday, October 20, 2008

Is the election a couple of weeks away? It's time to play the Democratic game called "scare the seniors".

A new Obama ad says:
Announcer: John McCain’s health care plan ... first we learned he’s going to tax health care benefits to pay for part of it.

Now the Wall Street Journal reports John McCain would pay for the rest of his health care plan “with major reductions to Medicare and Medicaid.”

Eight hundred and eighty-two billion from Medicare alone. “Requiring cuts in benefits, eligibility, or both.”

John McCain … Taxing Health Benefits ... Cutting Medicare. We Can’t Afford John McCain.

Obama: I’m Barack Obama and I approved this message.
FactCheck.org, which usually is less direct in their analysis, calls this ad "false":
In a TV ad and in speeches, Obama is making bogus claims that McCain plans to cut $880 billion from Medicare spending and to reduce benefits.

* A TV spot says McCain's plan requires "cuts in benefits, eligibility or both."

* Obama said in a speech that McCain plans "cuts" that would force seniors to "pay more for your drugs, receive fewer services, and get lower quality care."

These claims are false, and based on a single newspaper report that says no such thing. McCain's policy director states unequivocally that no benefit cuts are envisioned. McCain does propose substantial "savings" through such means as cutting fraud, increased use of information technology in medicine and better handling of expensive chronic diseases. Obama himself proposes some of the same cost-saving measures. We're skeptical that either candidate can deliver the savings they promise, but that's no basis for Obama to accuse McCain of planning huge benefit cuts.
I wonder if we'll see any other media outlets call Obama on this?

Nah.

[No, this isn't an endorsement of Medicare or Medicaid - its about 'the politics of fear' which the Democrats claim they're against and further claim only Republicans use.]

What would an election be without the Dems telling the old people that the GOP hates them and wants to take away their medicine, Medicare, and Social Security and force them to eat cat food?

I keep hearing that Factcheck.Org is owned by the Annenberg Foundation in Chicago. True?

That said, it strikes me that the Democrats see themselves as being in serious trouble, if they’re breaking out this stuff now.

More likely, they see a filibuster-proof Senate majority in the making and they are pulling out all the stops to make sure it happens.

Bit, here’s the page of the Annenberg Foundation website showing that Factcheck.org is an "initiative" of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania, one of multiple organizations and programs overseen by the Foundation.

Also listed on this page is the Annenberg Challenge program, from which Ayers obtained the $49.2 million grant to establish the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, which operated from 1995 to 2001.

As for why the Dems are scaring the seniors: Like Goldwater Girl says, it’s what they always do. Why not do it this year, especially since they are rolling in dough? I wish it did indicate desperation on their part.

My hope is that Obama’s team will so oversaturate the campaign ad market that for every senior frightened into voting for him, two or three other voters will get so sick of hearing about him that they’ll vote against him out of spite. Alternatively — and more likely — he’ll simply lose the votes of Dems who are so sure he’s got it in the bag that they won’t bother to get out and vote.

McQ - ...’the politics of fear’ which the Democrats claim they’re against and further claim only Republicans use.

Get used to it, ’cuz we’re going to be seeing much, MUCH more as massive redistribution of wealth gets under way over the next few years.

"Now [liberal news agency] reports that [GOP candidate] will cut funding for [choose from the list below]. [democrat (spit) candidate] will increase funding to help working families and invest in our future. On November -th, vote for [democrat (spit) candidate]."

—- Social Security
—- Medicare
—- Medicaid
—- Prescription drug coverage
—- Affordable health care for children
—- Increased pay for teachers
—- School breakfast and lunch
—- After-school programs
—- Language training for undocumented workers
—- Local government assistance programs
—- College tuition grants
—- Tax credits for working families
—- Environmental protection
—- Clean energy research programs
—- Worker retraining programs
—- Undocumented worker training programs
—- Unemployment benefits
—- etc, etc, etc

This is something that libs either don’t understand because they are stupid or else understand all too well because they are out to buy power with tax money:

Once people start living off the government tit, THE GOVERNMENT OWNS THEM.

Frankly, the Obama campaign could air ads claiming that McCain drinks a quart of bourbon per day and fellates collies and there wouldn’t be much more than a collective yawn from the media.

Well, he would get Sullivan’s interest at least :)

Frankly, I think these ads on health care by Obama are worthless.

Everybody with half a brain (that doesn’t include Obama or Biden) knows that Congress will beat any proposal for health care change (and anything else for that matter) within an inch of it’s life and that any legislation that emerges from the Congress will be unrecognizable from it’s original form.

So even if Obama or McCain said they were going to end health care, it wouldn’t happen, especially if there are any union member involved.

Is there a McCain ad out saying he is?

If not, you missed the point - again.

"That said, it strikes me that the Democrats see themselves as being in serious trouble, if they’re breaking out this stuff now."

Nah, just force of habit; it is a Democratic tradition.
You would think that the Republicans wouold be prepared for this, since it happens every election, and often in between.

" and fellates collies "

Collies are acceptable. Beagles, on the other hand, would be perverted.

Democrats also use "the politics of fear."

Indeed, it’s hard imagine making a political argument without implying that the other guy’s policies are bad. And logically, if they’re bad, one should be afraid of them.

There is, however, a difference between simply allowing that implication to be drawn, and openly stating, "Hey, hate and fear this guy!"

You can draw a line between suggesting that your opponent’s policies will harm the country, and the idea that your opponent is deiberately out to hurt the country or its citizens. I don’t think this catch here demonstrates Democrats claiming, essentially, that John McCain is out to win the election for the specific purpose of improverishing senior citizens - i.e. that he’s going to deliberately impoverish them and enjoy it.

I wouldn’t say that either. I’d say, at worst, that he just doesn’t care, not that he specifically looks forward to achieving the results accurately depicted on that mailer.

glasnost,

Allow me to translate:

"So he’s NEUTRAL on this issue, and won’t change anything. Therefor the Dems are fearmongering."

Also, re: Obama as a muslim...I think the GOP would be fine if the media would not print stories about weirdos claiming this, but they keep doing so in an effort to pain the GOP as racist.

Not in fact what I meant. What I meant is that while, yes, McCain is likely to cut Social Security and/or shift it into the markets, thus throwing Grandpa into the street - he’s not doing it for the sheer fun of throwing grandpa into the street. Nope, he has some other reason. Not sure what it is, but I’m sure it’s there.

Since his economic policy surrogate is already on record with Medicaid cuts, this it isn’t much of a stretch to see S.S. as next.

Glasnost,

So, since Obama says he will pull troops out of Iraq, pulling them out of Afghanistan isn’t much of a stretch...or raising capital gains to 100% since he already will raise them, or whatever?

capital gains TAX. If he could just raise the gains to 100%, I think I’d vote for him, too.

I find those kinds of arguments quite irritating, but, yes, they are explicitly made by Republicans all the time. Joe the Plumber was just making them on national television.

Besides, I’m not just inferring from other policies McCain supports. I’m also inferring from his record of being pro-SS-privatization (Bush 05 plan) when it counted.

Harun - you’re among the few around here with which someone might have a conversation. You think that putting SS accounts in the stock market might be causing some problems today? Or what?
