Just wondering?

Joe Biden's "Obama will be tested by an international crisis" premise gets backing from another Democrat:

This line of discussion by Democrats, especially the Democratic VP candidate and a former Democratic Secretary of State, frankly puzzles me.

Why, politically speaking, would they want to highlight an obvious negative concerning their candidate? Notice none of them are saying "and they'll test John McCain too." One can only assume that's because they don't believe McCain would be tested by these same groups or nations.

How is this "smart politics" on their part?

Obama is facing a truly daunting challenge in this campaign. He is facing a real test from:

The unforseen popularity of Sarah Pallin

The powerful image of an angry John McCain

The utter stupidity of his own running mate - Joe Biden

Facing three to one odds like this, he must be grateful for the chance to leave the campaign trail to see to his ailing grandmother.

As an aside - I wonder how many times he asks himself every day, "Why didn’t I pick Hillary?"

McQ - Why, politically speaking, would [filthy democrats] want to highlight an obvious negative concerning their candidate?

(A) Buyer’s remorse. When The Annointed One was the hot new product that everybody wanted to buy, they all jumped aboard the bandwagon to get some of it. Now that they have had a chance to take a closer look, they’re starting to realize that there’s not much substance behind the glitz. On domestic issues - socializing the country, vote fraud, persecuting "the rich" - he’s fine. However, they know that he’s a total lightweight when it comes to foreign affairs, and not even Joe "I’ve forgotten more about foreign policy than most people know" Biden will be able to help him.

(B) Selfishness. Even the most America-hating democrat realizes that, if something REALLY bad happens to our country, he’s in the same boat. Further, with a democrat (spit) in the White House AND democrat (spit) control of the Congress, they won’t be able to shift all of the blame onto Bush and the GOP no matter how hard they and their MSM lackeys work at it. Think Jimmuh and the Soviet invasion of A-stan on steroids.

Didn’t Plugs hint that he and the other candidates had gotten a sooper-sekrit intelligence briefing the other day? Perhaps there was something said that made him fear the future a little bit. Not that he’d go out and tell other people, of course (/ sarc), but perhaps he might have - somehow - let it slip that there’s trouble on the horizon. Lots of trouble.

(C) Overconfidence. According to all the polls, the filthy dems have this one in the bag, so they feel that they can talk about The Annointed One’s failings all they want, confident that enough voters will pull the lever for him and ACORN will fabricate any votes they otherwise need.

(D) Hatred. Look, the dems have railed for years that we are the only superpower in the world; it really seems to bother them, so much so that it isn’t unreasonable to assume that they wouldn’t mind if we got taken down a peg or two. So, for them to muse that we’re going to be "challenged" and that many of the hoi-poloi out in flyover country won’t like The Annointed One’s response... Well, imagine a really good football team with crooked owners who have bet against it. Yeah, it’s kind of inconvenient if the fans get too upset (gotta keep filling the stands next season, after all), but the real goal is for the team to lose.

They want to confound an attack on America because Obama is Weak with an attack on Obama.

See if America gets attacked, its not really on America. Its against Barack, really. He’s the center of all things. And as such, only Barack should determine the response. Definitely not Joe the Plumber.

They’re already starting the "if you disagree with Obama, you’re unpatriotic" drumbeat.

That’s EXACTLY what this is.

Because Obama is the victim. Everybody in the world is picking on him, but it’s cool, because wise, experienced old Joe Biden is there to guide us through. And also to cheer us up during the crisis with his fairy tales.
Just like in 1984, there will always be an exterior enemy against which we must all pull together. You don’t want to support the enemy, do you? Hmmmm? We must unite as one people, one nation, with one leader.

They’re saying that dissent won’t be patriotic any more if Obama gets elected.

Also, it sounds a little bit like Biden is telling a story here. He’s selling The Life of Obama as a coherent, directed narrative. A myth. I really don’t know how he might expect that to work out in reality, which isn’t a coherent and predictable "narrative". Likely Biden’s just an idiot who can’t distinguish reality from fantasy very well.

It seems possible, though certainly far-fetched, that this has something to do with reality. I’ve read that the administration is sharing intelligence estimates etc. with both campaigns, so that whoever wins will be up to speed. If that’s actually correct, I suppose it’s possible that they’ve got some plausible information about a significant attack planned for the spring or summer.

Sounds to me like they’re trying to lower expectations. They probably figure people are more concerned about their homes and 401k’s now than foreign affairs (and also considering most Americans’ lack of interest in foreign affairs, at least until something big happens) and this won’t hurt Obama at the polls. This way when Obama badly mishandles Iran or Al-Qaeda or whatever his disciples can point back and say, "See, we told you so." Then they’ll propose to spend - oops, "invest" - more money into government programs and to tax the "rich" to pay for it. And they’ll use the "Fairness Doctrine" to censor all criticism. Welcome to the future.

Biden was quite sure that the mighty O would fall back on him for foreign policy advice.
I expect Joe is about to discover he’s as useful to Obama as LBJ was to Kennedy.

For all we know O will be asking Rev Wright & Ayers what they think.

Obviously Obama will be tested. Right now more Americans say they’d trust him in a crisis than McCain. That’s big — this is no longer a negative for Obama.

Wait, you’re talking about Joe Biden and you assume it’s "smart politics"?

Biden is that funniest of people; an idiot who thinks he’s a genius and everybody else is an idiot.

Why else did conservatives laugh their butts off when Obama chose Biden?

Wow, just think you’ll have to decide soon who is a greater President - Barak or Jimah.
I mean, Barak’s Nobel prize can’t be far behind, so far the miracles have started to flow and we’re just thinking of making him President.

Oil prices are down, Global Warming has slowed, we have an agreement for pulling out of Iraq, the breathgasm is being scheduled to send the vibe out into the universe, we’re going to stop supporting Israel....It’’s just amazing!

To what extent, now that people are getting used to the idea, is an economic crisis going to promote conservative feelings rather than chancy change?

I think it’s possible that the way being the "other party" makes the economic goings-on a benefit for Obama, people’s gut reactions to insecurity is always going to be to seek the least risky option.

How does that relate to talking about how Obama will be tested? Is this older men trying to say that they will be there to hold his hand? Biden said he’s got "steel in his spine." Do they think this might sway those voters who do worry that Obama is young and untested, by the candor and reassurance given? It’s very odd.

I don’t see how what you’ve listed, SShiell, has generated a "daunting challenge" for Obama.

Let’s look at the polls shall we, because after all that’s all we have to work with right now.
He’s got the "daunting challenge" of being up in the polls in almost every battleground state?
He’s got the "daunting challenge" of this "unforseen popularity of Palin" who’s unfavorable ratings have only gone up since she was selected?
He’s got to contend with the "powerful image" of an angry John McCain who looks more and more disoriented and his unfavorable ratings have also increased?

The stupidity of Joe Biden I can give you, but everything else suggests that Obama is sitting in the catbird seat right now.

You must have been joking, right?

They wouldn’t. Biden is an idiot who blurts out stuff all the time. He did what Biden does, and it’s too late in the game to disagree openly so instead everyone’s trying to roll with it.

Hmmm, just read an interesting comment on Ace of Spades. The commenter said that Biden meant that this move would be unpopular with DEMOCRATS and that they should "stay with us."

I’m thinking he’s trying to set up the fact that Obama will end up doing stuff like Bush or Clinton did, i.e. putting troops in harms way, and that won’t make the anti-war folks happy.

Ask your self how you feel about Obamas associations when hear Biden saying things like this:
we’re gonna need you to use your influence, your influence within the community, to stand with him. Because it’s not gonna be apparent initially, it’s not gonna be apparent that we’re right
This comment seems to get no play, and its the one the scares the hell out of me. A 527 should put that quote up along with Obamas ’friends’, Rezko, Wright and Ayers. Ayers being an unrepentent terrorist that whats to educate children.

Prof. Erb — Yes, we know this is the drum you are beating these days, but (typically) you are not responding to the question on the table: How is it smart politics to scare Americans with a scenario they had not been considering, should Obama be elected?

Even if voters trust Obama, does the Democratic leadership really want voters to make the connection: "Vote for Obama and experience 9-11 or the Cuban Missile Crisis"?

That doesn’t make sense. I suspect Biden was running at the mouth, trying to impress people with his insight about foreign affairs.
