...And a 1,000 round box of .30 Carbine ammo only costs $240.

Auto Ordnance M1 .30 Carbine

Auto Ordnance is now making them brand new, and you can pick one up for about $750.

I'm just saying...

Because Obama is gonna take teh guns! Plus, he’s not even an US citizen! And he’s a Marxist. The guy with the theatre degree from BYU told me so.

Hey Dale, don’t look now, but that’s a black helicopter above you’re head. BO sent the UN to get ya!

Hofstadter would understand, Dale.

Yeah, the carbine works well.

My choice is the AR15. With XM193.

But .30 carbine is good, too.

mkultra,

I admit some people are getting a little hyperventilated, but seriously, I think its just a good excuse for a gun post. (I hope that I am right here, and that all of these worries will never come to pass.)

I have never owned a gun in my life, and can’t own one in Taiwan, but my Taiwanese wife is insistent that she gets a gun if we move back to the States. She also liked my uncles pick-up truck. So I guess we will become rednecks and she can cling to her Taoism, too.

I seem to recall reading that the AutoOrdnance M-1 carbines had some quality problems when they first came out. Anybody else know anything about that?

Anyway, I don’t see the point in buying a gun right now: it’ll just be that more of my money / property that will be ultimately siezed from me by our new democrat (spit) masters in the name of "fairness" or "spreading the wealth" or "THE CHILDREN!!!"

Sigh...

Why buy one of those when you can get a genuine USGI version for the same or cheaper? CMP. AO carbines will depreciate in value, WW2 carbines will continue to increase in value.

The wingnuts are all claiming: Obama’s friend Ayers planned to murder 25 million Americans. Some stupid, ditto-blogs are posting this right now.

But really Rush and Sean Hanity invent a time machine in 2009 and went back in time (a la The Terminator) and planted this false document to frame President Obama.

It’s all very nuanced. The right-wing is very evil.

I have no military hardware, but I do own a .270 that I can take out your eye at 300yds. with. I was over at a friends place a couple of days ago and we were shooting his m-1. He has a range set up in his front yard. At 60, I was proud that I could still put all 8 in the black at 300yds. from an offhand position. I live in a county of 14,000 souls and it is deep blue. Our sheriff would never attempt to confiscate firearms, no matter who told him to. Not dedication to the second amendment, just survival.

Mkultra’s right. Why would Obama take our guns? He’s got such a strong pro-gun record.

(Of course I don’t believe that. I’m pretending I’m on Bizarro Planet, where mkultra lives. It’s nice there. Recently they elected Bizarro McCain president. He defeated Bizarro Obama,a pro-gun candidate whose campaign slogan was "Spread Your Own Damn Wealth Around." Bizarro McCain, who ran on a socialist, high-tax program, seems to be having a very successful presidency, because on Bizarro Planet, the laws of economics as we know them don’t apply, and on Bizarro Planet, you really can tax a nation into prosperity! )

I actually own an AO M1 carbine. It’s a nice piece and when I bought it they were only about $500. That was about $200 cheaper than vintage. Of the vintage articles I found, most were shot to pieces anyway. Don’t know what prices are like for the CMP M1 Carbines, but I do know they sell out of them awfully fast whenever they get a few in.

I have the earlier AO model that’s dressed up to look Korean War era. I prefer it because, among other things, it has better sights and a better safety than the WWII model. It also has a place to put a bayonet. You know, in case I need to perform a drive-by bayoneting. I threw an Ultimak rail on the fore-end so I can add a scout scope or red dot sight if I desire.

I’d like to know where you’re buying 1000 rounds for $240. The closest I can get online is $255 and it’s that steel-cased wolf stuff. I can shoot it, but my gun doesn’t particularly like it. Some of it is steel-cored so I can’t use it at my main range. Plus it’s ball, which is a notoriously poor stopper in .30 carbine. If you’re putting together a home defense carbine, you want soft-points (jsp) not fullmetal jacket (fmj).

Don’s right though. Buy an AR-15 if you can. I hardly ever shoot my M1 after I built my 16" middy. Compared to the carbine it is as handy, as reliable, more accurate, and shoots a more powerful cartridge with longer range. If you buy a flat-top (and you should) it will be easier to add optics than the M1 carbine. If you buy a stripped lower and assemble your own with a del-ton kit, the AR-15 probably even cheaper. Ammo is a bit more expensive now, but that’s mostly because the Army is shooting so much of it abroad. When I first got my AR, 5.56 was cheaper than .30 carbine.

On Bizarro Planet, shark, recently-elected Bizarro McCain, a former "blue-diaper" baby ("Blue" being the traditional color of the Libertarian Party—which on Bizarro Planet advocates State-socialism) had mentors that included Rev. Jeremiah Wrong. who advocates "White Liberation" theology, a mixture of State-socialism and white supremacy); and Frank Valley, an LP subversive and secret agent. If that weren’t enough, Bizarro McCain was also buddies with a member of the radical "Meteorologist" wing of the LP, which was involved in several bombings in the Sixtioes. McCain’s buddy, in fact, actually killed people! Not only that but Bizarro McCain was caught lying about the extent of their association. And yet Bizarro McCain won the election handily. That’s because on Bizarro Planet, the citizenry actually enjoys being taxed, as along as the president uses some of the money to buy them unicorns.

Always liked the 30 carbine ...

Barack Obama will ban every gun he has the votes for, make sure he isn’t elected or be sorry.

I live in California, so that’s out.

And I never liked the AR platform anyway.
Why buy one of those when you can get a genuine USGI version for the same or cheaper? CMP. AO carbines will depreciate in value, WW2 carbines will continue to increase in value.
a) Because the GI versions tend to have been shot to sh*t for the past 50 years.

b) At around $1,300, they aren’t cheaper. They’re about twice the price.

c) I’m not collecting. I will be shooting. Rather often.
Because Obama is gonna take teh guns! Plus, he’s not even an US citizen! And he’s a Marxist. The guy with the theatre degree from BYU told me so.

Hey, idiot.

I didn’t mention Obama or the apocalypse, did I? I’m just pointing out a new gun that I’m interested in.

Project much?

It’s a WWII-era piece that I want. It’ll snuggle up nice right beside my Garand. That’s all. I want one for the same reason I have WWII aircraft prints on my office walls instead of F-15s or whatnot.

Jesus, you’ve been reading me at this blog for years, and you still don’t know the first thing about me, or how I think. How is that possible?

You must be the stupidest person I’ve ever interacted with.
I have a YUGO SKS and several thousand rounds No worries.
I do, too. And a Garand. This isn’t about survivalism—at least, not to any greater extent than usual. It’s a cool little M1 Carbine.

Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.

mkultura believes the police have an obligation to protect him. They do not.

I don’t think I’ll need my seatbelt when I drive home from work tonight, but I’m going to buckle it anyway. I always did, even before it was required.

I don’t think I’ll need a gun. Or locks on my door. Or homeowner’s insurance.
I even check my oil level and tire pressure. You never know. I guess that makes me certifiable in some people’s minds.

I was in Costco this week, and a woman there told me during a conversation that if Obama wins, she and her husband are moving to Idaho and buying some guns.

She says she is also removing her money from the bank, and will no longer declare income taxes.

She said she would rather go to prison than allow Obama and his Obamabots to take her guns or her money. "He can drop dead, the slimy bastard," she said.

She has a great idea. Maybe if we all do that (except for the moving to Idaho part), the whole economy will collapse and Obama can be thrown out of office in 2012.

To hear me, of all people, even saying such things shows how disgusted I am with the state of affairs in this country.

My suggestion is to not worry too much about an Obama or McCain victory. Stores will still sell beer the next day. Your kid will still want to go to the park. Your wife will still ignore you. You know, life goes on.

Short, light & handy, and capable of surprising accuracy. Picked up an original a few years back(lucked onto it for a good price) and it’s become one of my favorite rifles. Stick the Ultimak mount on it for a red dot sight, and that’s a real handy rig if you want to add an optical sight.

Jeff, I think the AO carbine follows the early WWII design: push-button safety and flip rear sight; later models had the lever safety and adjustable rear sight.

Ball ammo has a so-so reputation as a fight-stopper, but there is soft- and hollowpoint ammo around for that purpose. Or you can handload; while back I tried using the Sierra 110-grain Varminter hollowpoint with interesting results.

except for the moving to Idaho part
As I recall, Wyoming doesn’t require the registering of firearms, simply that you be able to prove (should it be required) that you paid for it legally at a reputable establishment... Still a background check, but hey...

Better than the Illinois FOID and Register method, in my mind...

It’s still steel-cased Wolf. I’d buy a box or two and shoot it through before you buy in quantity. My M1 doesn’t particularly like wolf and extracts it poorly. A lot of it is also steel cored, so check whether you can actually shoot it at your range. If you want good stuff, go with Georgia Arms Canned Heat in FMJ or JSP. It is more expensive but worth it.

The current AO models are WWII layout. I guess customers want guns that look like they just came off the set of Band of Brothers. AOs original model (which I have) was Korean War layout. I prefer mine because the rear sight is superior.

mkultra has the odd idea that Obama’s track record on gun rights (abysmal and confiscatory, and all public record) doesn’t "count" somehow.

Why might that be?

It’s not as if a Federal ban on the new manufacture (and thus incident price increases and supply issues) of certain cosmetically-defined firearms hasn’t happened before. And it’s not as if that law was not very popular (directly proportional to its actual lack of effect on its supposed target, criminal use of firearms) with Democrats.

Given an almost certain Democratic majority in Congress, why exactly should people who care about their Constitutional rights not be worried about Obama being President?

(PS. There’s also nothing wrong with an AR-15. For people in more rural areas a CETME/G3 or FAL might be more appropriate and not much more expensive (less, depending - I think my CETME was $450, but that was a while ago), but they’re radically overpowered for home defense or urban environments.)

My issue with the M1 carbine is the ammo - I’ve never seen anything but FMJ.

Short story. Guy wounds buck with .270, buck runs down a steep ravine and holes up in a small stand of trees. Guy doesn’t want to slide down there with scoped .270, grabs "nice light M1 carbine". Finds buck, empties mag into him... and then has to track him about a half mile. Nope, wasn’t me, but I watched the whole thing from where the original .270 shot was taken.

If all you want to do is punch paper, or you’re subject to the Geneva Convention...

I prefer mine because the rear sight is superior.
The "Band of Brothers" version actually has the 100m and 300m flip peep sights, instead of the flip-up notch sights of the original.

Hope the Georgia Arms stuff makes it less touchy than a P38 I once had; absolutely flat reliable with FMJ, would feed round soft point Speer 125s with a jam about once every 50 rounds, and nothing else. Had a good local guy polish and slightly modify the ramp. That took the Speer to 1 in 100, did nothing for the rest.

The original had the ’L’ shape flip sight, one aperture for 100 yards, the other for 300, I don’t think the M1 Carbine ever had notch rear sights in any production.

I’ve had good results with the Wolf ball for practice. Occasionally a stovepipe, no other problems. And the stuff shoots 2" groups at 100 yards.

Federal and Winchester and Remington all make soft- or hollowpoint ammo for it.
