RIP Dean Barnett
Posted by: McQ on Monday, October 27, 2008

What a downer today. I learned that Dean has passed away from complications stemming from his battle with Cystic Fibrosis.

Bill Kristol, his boss at the Weekly Standard, made the announcement:
It’s my sad duty to report that our good friend and valued contributor Dean Barnett passed away today. He was a remarkable man–principled, witty, and to all of us, a model of grace and courage. We mourn his passing and cherish his memory.
Dean was a trip. He never let CF slow him down. And in my few dealings with him when he was hosting or co-hosting at Pundit Review Radio, he was a riot. Always laughing and always cracking puns and jokes. He also was bright, accessible and able to establish an instant rapport with callers that I think any talk show host would envy.

Given what he faced everyday, his attitude was just something to behold. Kevin Whalen lays out a perfect summary of that attitude in Dean's own words:
At one point during my interview, the questioner asked me if I expected to see a cure to CF in my lifetime. I answered no, but that it doesn’t really matter. When you see death up close, a couple of things become clear. One is that we all die, and that death is just part of the deal. The other is that life is such a blessing, that it’s just so great, even though you know the inevitable might be near you still want as many bites of the apple as possible.
In his relatively short time with us, he ate the whole thing. Dean was one of the good guys, someone with whom I always enjoyed talking and interacting and certainly someone I'll miss.

Rest in Peace, Dean.

I read several bits he wrote, and I was lucky enough to catchhim on one pundit review radio (talking about Biden).

I feel cheated I didn’t know about this guy my whole life. I will have to find and read/listen more.

God’s Speed, Mr Barnett. God’s Speed...
