First Exit Polling (update)

Keep in mind that exit polls are not scientific. The respondents are self-selected. They aren't predictive. Their purpose is to give some insight as to why people voted the way they did.

But here is a smattering of the fist exit poll results:

56% oppose the bailout bill.
76% feel the country is on the wrong track.
58% of white male respondents in VA voted for McCain
52% of late deciders in IA and 54% in OH voted for Obama
43% say government is doing too much
67% are worried about affording health care
68% support offshore drilling
70% predict their taxes will go up under Obama
38% think Palin is qualified to be president
73% disapprove of the job Congress is doing
57% feel Obama is in touch with people like them, vice 40% for McCain
58% feel Obama has the right judgment to be president, vice 49% for McCain
85% are worried about the direction of the economy for the next year

So, make of that what you will.

UPDATE [McQ]: More exit polling data:

Preliminary Exit Poll Results From Fox News

12% will be excited if McCain wins
30% will be scared if McCain wins
32% will be excited if Obama wins
23% will be scared if Obama wins
51% say the government should do more to solve problems
43% say the government is doing too much
70% are worried there will be another terrorist attack
27% say they were contacted by Obama camp
19% say they were contacted by Mccain camp
68% favor offshore oil drilling

The top issue: economy 62%, Iraq 10%, terrorism 9%, health care 9%.

hmmm... tough to call on the exit vs. telephone poll difference. Definitely a trend against Obama - and given that the exit polls tend to favor the Dem. this could spell a long night for the Democrats - not yet enough their to say McCain is going to do it but definitely a trend in his favor.
