President-elect Obama had a 15 minute conversation with the President of Poland, Lech Kaczynski. Here's how the Polish leader remembers it:
Mr. Kaczynski issued a statement in the Polish-language section of his Web site saying the U.S. president-elect "emphasized the importance of the strategic partnership of Poland and the United States and expressed hope in the continuation of political and military cooperation between our countries. He also said that the missile-defense project would continue."
However, according to the Obama camp, the President-elect made no such promise:
"President-elect had a good conversation with the Polish president and the Polish prime minister about the important U.S.-Poland alliance," Mr. McDonough said. "President Kaczynski raised missile defense but President-elect Obama made no commitment on it. His position is as it was throughout the campaign — that he supports deploying a missile-defense system when the technology is proved to be workable."
If Obama supports the missile-defense system "when the technology is proved workable", then he must support the missile-defense system in general, correct? So would it be a stretch for the Polish president to draw a conclusion from that general support that he was promising the "missile-defense project would continue?"

Given the Obama statement it seems to be a reasonable conclusion.

Apparently Obama doesn't yet realize that foreign policy and diplomacy requires careful wording of anything said. You can't be off-handed, you can't throw around glittering generalities and you can't be non-specific. Great stuff for campaign speeches, but a minefield in the diplomatic world. You have to know what you're going to say and how you're going to say it before you make the phone call, attend the meeting or issue the statement.

Off to a good start with another ally.

This sounds classic. Obama’s Zelig routine is fine for campaigning, but not for leading.

I really think Obama believes deep down that he can talk his way out of anything. This is not going to work for him as president.

"Apparently Obama doesn’t yet realize that foreign policy and diplomacy requires careful wording of anything said."

I have believed for some time that The Clown™ is so naive, and so inexperienced, and was rewarded in the campaign for telling one thing, then saying the complete opposite, and not being called on it by the slavish media, that he thinks he can tell one ally one thing and the media another.

I bet he told Kaczynski just that - that we support the missile defense. Then he told the media he didn’t support it, because he doesn’t want to anger Russia. What he doesn’t realize - and here his inexperience kicks in - is that you cannot do that kind of thing as President. You can do it as a congressman or a Senator, and tell one group "I want to ban handguns" and another that "I support the 2nd Amendment," but that has few repercussions outside of your district or state. As President, your actions have international ramifications.

We warned everyone what electing a naive and inexperienced doofus would bring us. Jews have a word for it: it is called "surace." Google it and see how apropos it is to what Obama will be bringing to every American, including the 48% who didn’t vote for him.
