HRC for Sec State?
Posted by: McQ on Friday, November 14, 2008

Obama could make worse *cough* John Kerry *cough* selections:
Several Obama transition advisers are strongly advocating Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) for secretary of state, a move that would create the ultimate “Team of Rivals” Cabinet, according to officials involved in the discussions.

President-elect Obama has narrowed the possibilities for secretary of state, and Clinton is among those being strongly considered, the officials said. Some even call her the favorite.
Mike Allen hints that an Obama mention of Doris Kearns Goodwin's "Team of Rivals" about Abraham Lincoln and his cabinet of Lincoln rivals may signal his willingness to seat Clinton.

I've come to have a grudging respect for Clinton, not that I share any of her political views, but she is one of the few politicians I'd use the word "competent" near.

And I have little doubt that she'd be a tough Sec. State and give Putin a run for his money.

But tell me folks, where are the hot spots of the world right now, and what is their general view of women and dealing with them in just about any capacity except a subservient one? While I like Condi Rice, she's not been particularly effective in the Middle East.

Some may call my point a legitimization of their sexism and something for which we shouldn't stand. That's the idealistic view. Of course others would say that if one of our foreign policy priority areas is the Middle East, why should we handicap our effort right off the bat? That's a pragmatic and realistic question.

Frankly I think she'd be a good Sec. State. And it would pretty much take her out of the health care debate, which would be a net positive for the right. However, although I think she'd make a good Secretary of State in general, I have to wonder - through absolutely no fault of her own - if she'd be the right one for this particular time in our nation's history.

Maybe, but I don’t believe she has the tact. Moreover, I think she still has aspirations for the Oval Office and the wisdom to know that Secretary of State is a terrible place from which to politic.

She does it for 4 years (she’s not going to run against Obama in ’12), boosts her foreign policy creds, does the rubber chicken circuit for a couple of years and then launches in ’14 for ’16.

Let’s not appease authoritarian regimes in the Mideast and make our decisions based on appeasing their sexism. Anyway, I think they realize that when they deal with the US Secretary of State, they’re dealing with the US government. There is no evidence that Rice was any less effective than Powell.

I heard the complaint (from liberals I work with) that Palin could not be taken seriously in the Middle East because she is a woman. These same folks think Hillary will make a strong, respected Sec of State. Hypocrisy, the greatest luxury.

Since I absolutely trust Clintons to do what is best for Clintons and nobody else, such a pick would be at least very interesting.

If I were Obama!, I would trust Hillary to be Sec State except I think she still wants to be president.

With Obama! as president, she has to wait until at least 2016 if he runs in 2012. And if he picks a different VP next time and wins, she’ll have to run against a sitting VP from a 2-term president. Add in that in 2016 she’s going to be looking either all wrinkly or all botoxed. There is still a double-standard in America, old men can look distinguished, older women have to try to stay looking young.

So she has to torpedo him and make him not even run next time and there’s a lot of mischief a Sec State can do.

Like plenty of leaks like the one Bill did just before the election where he said that Obama! had called Team Clinton to ask what to do about the financial problem.

She has more fight in her than anyone in the country.

I like the pick.
