"White Man’s Disease" - Diversity Gone Mad
Posted by: McQ on Wednesday, November 26, 2008

Because it is thought to be a 'white male disease', Cystic Fibrosis is apparently not worthy of charitable fund raising:
Carleton University won't be holding popular fundraiser to benefit cystic fibrosis, it was confirmed Tuesday, after the student council passed a motion falsely claiming the disease affects only white men.
Dean Barnett, who I recently paid tribute too, died from complications associated with CF. Apparently, per Carleton, Dean wasn't worthy of any sort of charitable effort.
According to Bergamini, the motion read that orientation week strives to be inclusive and volunteers should feel like their fundraising efforts are serving a diverse community.

However, the motion went on to say that "and whereas cystic fibrosis has been recently revealed to only affect white people and primarily men, be it resolved that: CUSA discontinue its support of this campaign."
This vote ended 24 years of the University's participation in the fund raising event for cystic fibrosis.

Given their desire to be more "inclusive" and have an effort that serves a more diverse community, I'm sure the CF effort won't be replaced by an effort to raise money for Sickle Cell Anemia or breast cancer. Obviously neither are inclusive nor serve a diverse community so should never be a part of any effort at CU. And that would pertain to any number of other disesases as well.

Right?

Shame on you Carleton University.

This is ridiculous. Do these college students understand that while CF may only affect white (which is a badly defined term used more in identity politics rather than medicine) men (and even this point is arguable), do they not get that the sufferring of white men affect many other people, like blacks, gays, women who happen to be their friends/ family/ co workers/ whatever?

Do they think that the white men just stand alone together as a group, and nothing that affects them affects other? Don’t they know white men do form relationships to people in their favoured protected classes?

For liberals, they seem to have a very narrow minded view of society.

If you don’t care about the truth, you can lie all day long. It makes for glibness without knowing the first thing about whatever you happen to be talking about. The first lie that you tell is that "the only truth is that there is no truth" and then all statements are of equal value.

That’s the Left, and what you see in that cystic fibrosis thing is the Left’s lying gone wild. It isn’t some isolated instance of complete stupidity; it is of a piece with the whole program.

There is a huge difference between living in a world with coherent interwoven norms that are rational and conform to reality, and living in a world that is painted over with networks of lies that conform only to a false narrative.

When the former is supplanted by the latter you have a civilization that’s going down, fast, into dark cold waters, to the bottom.

Wow, just wow. Just substitute sickle cell and blacks for CF and white males and you have a national uproar.

I guess if CF is a white man’s disease then this little girl must be acting white.

Nice: some people deserve to suffer and die based on their skin color. The tolerance and love shown by the left for others brings a tear to my eye. And just think: these yahoos vote and hence have influence on public policy.

Hey! Maybe that’s how we’ll eventually pay for "free" health care: only people of certain races, colors, creeds, sexual orientation, etc, will be able to get it. Everybody else will merely have to pay taxes to fund it.

We need to get ready for this when Obama takes over our health care. Politics already influence how federal dollars are allocated for medical research. Now we will have politicians deciding how much money will be allocated to treat each one and that decision will be predicated on the level of organization of each advocacy group. Does anyone want to bet that more resources will be dedicated to diseases like AIDS and breast cancer than...say.. prostate cancer? The latter only afflicts men after all and it it doesn’t have a higher incidence in any aggrieved minority groups.

I’ve been telling people this for years. Why would people give politicians the power of life and death (oh, wait a minute...). Let me rephrase that: Why would people give them even more power over life and death?

And especially idiotic is that they can’t see how easily it can be used against them. Take HIV for example. Now, what would happen with a conservative/religious resurgence in politics and a Universal Health care system in place? What happens when the people in power consider the disease or the person afflicted as a sinner or sinful? Think the separation of church and state will save you? The you need an lesson in de jure vs. de facto.

This story of Carleton University is a small scale object lesson in Identity Politics meets Healthcare. Wait till it looms on a massive fedral bureaucracy scale.

As of Wednesday, 26 November, the Carleton University Student Council has reversed their decision:

Carleton University Students’ Association President Brittany Smyth has indicated that CUSA council will revisit the motion to change the orientation program charity from Shine-A-Rama.

“It has become clear that there is not an appetite at Carleton to change from Shine-A-Rama,” said Ms. Smyth. “The responsible thing to do is to reverse the decision.”

While the motion merely stated the students’ association would investigate switching to another charity, students have made it clear that they do not want the change.

“I both respect and admire the students’ commitment to the cause of raising funds for cystic fibrosis,” stated Ms. Smyth. “I believe this issue has been blown out of proportion but the motion was never meant to imply that raising funds for Cystic Fibrosis research was not a worthwhile cause. I do apologize for the negative attention Carleton has received”.

even more interesting, note the name of their main campus newspaper: " The Charlatan"

Look, if this is a true account, it shouldn’t be surprising because this is simply a straightforward implementation of diversity. If you can say one person should get screwed over on a job, it’s perfectly reasonable to say he should also get screwed over on medical care. This is the intended outcome.

Leftists learn young. The key argument against their decision was not canceling but the rationale why. Note that Ms Smyth never once mentions that stated reason.

Wanna get really scared? The fellow who brought the motion and stated/wrote the premable was a fourth year science student at Carleton and the science faculty rep to the meeting. He didn’t get one medical/scientific fact correct.

The Carleton council could have found any number of good reasons for changing or rotating charities. However, there are few things as dangerous or damaging as bad arguments for good ideas.

If four years of science study at Carleton isn’t sufficient to prevent such shoddy research from a *scientist*, especially when he views himself as acting in an elected, quasi-official capacity...well, that doesn’t exactly speak well of the Institution, does it. Let alone Mr Northrup’s skill as a scientist.

Mr Northrup also followed up his errors in a later interview, noting that he wouldn’t have used the term caucasian had he known it didn’t mean just "white"...like that would have made his point of view totally OK.

But it gets weirder:

The [Carleton] Charlatan states in their article about the Shinerama back-pedal (since they’re now gonna revisit the decision) that CUSA president Brittany Smyth was attempting reassure everybody by noting "very little, if any, discussion was focused on the perambulatory [sic] clause that contains the controversial statement about who is affected by cystic fibrosis"

(side issue: I’m sure they meant "preambulatory" since they weren’t discussing walking)

Anyways, so Ms Smyth actually thinks it’s *better* that the racist/sexist ideology behind the motion didn’t even raise much of an eyebrow. Yeah, sure...that’s reassuring; I gather that means they accept the point of view as a given, something to be assumed when discussing other issues as well.

I mean, some of the Council might only be 1st year students, but still...

Certainly explains the stance that some "scientists" have on global warming. Ideology over facts every time.

Yeah, leftists are never concerns about such little things.
