Selling Senate Seats
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, December 09, 2008

He may not govern from Chicago, but this is an example of Chicago politics at its "finest". Federal agents arrested IL governor Rod Blagojevich and his chief of staff at their homes early this morning:
In one charge related to the appointment of a senator to replace Barack Obama, prosecutors allege that Blagojevich sought appointment for himself as Secretary of Health and Human Services in the new Obama administration, or a lucrative job with a union, in exchange for appointing a union-preferred candidate.

Another charge alleges Blagojevich and Harris conspired to demand the firing of Chicago Tribune editorial board members responsible for editorials critical of him in exchange for state help with the sale of Wrigley Field, the Chicago Cubs baseball stadium owned by Tribune Co.

Blagojevich and Harris, along with others, obtained and sought to gain financial benefits for the governor, members of his family and his campaign fund in exchange for appointments to state boards and commissions, state jobs and state contracts, according to the charges.

"The breadth of corruption laid out in these charges is staggering," U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said in a statement.
BTW, you remember Patrick Fitzgerald don't you? Scooter Libby does.

Ted Stevens goes down. "Cold cash" Jefferson goes down. Blagojevich is arrested. There are tiny rays of sunshine behind the gathering dark clouds, aren't there?

Looks like another episode of "Name That Party!". Sitting at the car dealer this morning, watching a CNN ’Breaking News’ segment on Blagojevich, I noticed that they also couldn’t bring themselves to mention the party of the accused.

Schadenfreude aside, the rays are pretty tiny. If we’re seeing this many who get caught with their hands in the cookie jar, it’s a safe bet that there are many, many more cookie thieves who are not stupid enough to get caught.

The amount of money that goes through government these days is staggering. That kind of money, controlled by a political process instead of an economic one, inevitably draws corruption. We can lock up a dozen of these guys a year, and that just tells the next generation to be more careful in how they arrange the payoffs.

I don’t see any cure for this. We can pass all the ethics laws we like, and it just means the successful politicians become more devious in the ways they dispense favors and collect the payoffs.

And it looks like The Office Of the Pres.-Elect will now have a bit of a Rezko issue to deal with...

My my my. Not even sworn in, and the 1st scandal emerges.

Excuse me while I give the big horse laugh.

I’m sorry, but The Office of the Pres.-Elect should be grilled quite hard over what he knew of (and contributed to) these scandals while he was SERVING HIS WHOLE POLITICAL LIFE IN THE CHICAGO SEWER.

This sure looks to me like someone on Obama’s fringe being thrown, not under the bus, but under the President-Elect’s convoy of black-SUVs. Blagojevich is being discarded before he can get close enough to Obama to be a liability.
Blagojevich’s comments came amid increasing concern by Democrats that the governor’s pending appointment of a Senate successor may become politically tainted as a result of the investigations surrounding his administration.
Democrats throwing one of their own to the lions so we can cheer the Emporer.

Barack Obama. The President-elect.

This may make Whitewater look like a 2 cent deal. I knew Obama was deeply involved in crooked land deals and stolen funds in Illinois when he was a state Senator. I have a friend who works for a government agency in Illinois. They told me in April or May the following:

"I pray that Obama is not elected, because we may well be looking at another independent counsel investigation of a sitting President. And from what I have seen, Obama is dirty. An IC will look into his land deals. And if that happens, Rezko will turn on him, Blagojevich will turn on him, and then the entire US government goes down in flames. Pray that that does not happen."

This could get very interesting, and very quickly. Can we all say "impeachment" again?

I don’t think it’s a safe bet (thre are many, many more) at all. There’s really no basis for making this claim. You may be right, but there’s no evidence for it. We may, in fact, be catching everyone.

Solution: smaller government.

Unfortunately, nobody seems to want that unless we’re talking about the DoD, and then only the dems (spit) want it (unless it’s money going to their states / districts, in which case they’re all for it).

For the vast majority of political favor exchange, it’s in the interest of both sides to keep it completely hidden. Given such incentives on their part, are you really prepared to believe that they always (or almost always) fail at that? Not to mention the possibility of co-opting law enforcement as part of the whole sordid mess.

It strikes me as, well, let’s just say "overly optimistic" to even consider the possibility that law enforcement is that pure and smart.

The FBI ran a sting in Tennessee a couple of years ago, and snagged five legislators who were effectively willing to take bribes. Sounds like a target-rich environment to me.

Huh?

I read the STORY, and nowhere does it indicate that there is any accusation of any wrongdoing by Obama. There are allegations against the bank, maybe against Rezko, but not even a suggestion of wrongdoing by obama, except the reference to the debunked accusations that Obama bought the house from a private couple under market, which he didn’t, though he did negotiate 15% down from the asking price.

Rezko is going to prison, he will roll on ANYONE, and if there were anything to roll on Obama for, it would have been done.

You mean like putting the entire political class governing Arkansas in jail that kind of turning up "nothing?" Or do you mean finding the POTUS guilty of lying to a Grand Jury, kind of "nothing?"

No this time we can just sweep any unpleasantness under the rug, UNLESS, of course, Obama doesn’t want to play ball with Rangel, Conyers, Reid et al. and then we might see a little more "interest" in Obama’s associates....just a thought.

I don’t believe that Obama could be a state senator, senator and Pres. candidate and not have knowledge of it (or contributed to it)

Lets get some subpoenas to the Office of the Office of the Pres.-Elect.

I wonder what happens if that whole bunch of rotten Chicago pols suddenly starts to roll on Obama.

Rezko, for instance, seemed to me to be afraid of saying anything about Obama. But now that he’s rolled on Blagojevich, and Blagojevich is safely indicted, it might be easier if the two of them display the goods on Obama.

I hasten to add that it’s clearly beyond the pale to suggest any impropriety whatsoever on the part of Obama. After all, he would never associate with Rezko in the unseemly manner that Blagojevich did. Such a thing is unthinkable! Not the messiah.

We know, as a matter of divine intuition, that Obama’s relationship with Rezko was pure, and that Obama was so far above the rot of Chicago politics that it’s absurd, and perhaps even racist, to mention Obama and Chicago in the same sentence.

And the 8 years before that wants so badly to say hello again, but this time it will be all blather in blogs, not Congressmen with guns and pumpkins in their backyards re-enacting Presidential murder conspiracy theories and infinite budgeted open ended investigations into anything any everything that might, may, could possibly, hurt the President.

I am predicting here, so there is obviously room for error, but since McPhillips is so sure there are going to be major scandals, it’s pretty much a lock there won’t be.

The funny thing is, when they were investigating Clinton, I really believed he was dirty. I could not imagine all those investigations would be approved and paid for without a foundation.

I was so young and naive.

I know that the Republicans would like to do it all over again, and if they win the Congress in 2010, they probably will. It will distract our entire goverment from doing things like preventing terrorism, but it could help the Republican party, so it’ll be worthwhile.

It would be pure unwarranted speculation to even turn one’s mind — in the most unwarranted and forbidden way — toward what would be the most unlikely concerns striking anew the the Office of the President-Elect. Certainly Rahm Emanuel would never accept the high position of White House Chief of Staff if that terrible blackguard governor, Rod Blagojevich, had anything on him.

Besides, Blagojevich is clearly not smart enough to keep any item of potential evidence on any of his associates from the Chicago political family for the rainy day that has, alas, come too soon in his brilliant political career. While a great shooting star of Illinois politics, Blagojevich is clearly not rocket scientist enough to have made preparations like that.

Likewise, it would be out of line, preposterous, incendiary, ridiculous, uncalled for, speculative, and indecent — not to mention possibly racist — to even suggest the smallest possibility that the blessed high occupant of the high position of Office of the President-Elect in any way (other than those totally innocent examples that became known during the campaign) had his hand in the Chicago cookie jar.

Why, the Vatican has all but announced a fast-track to sainthood for Him. Saints preserve us against these unwarranted, and perhaps even illegal, speculations about He who has been annointed.

Chicago is a major scandal. The indictment of the governor of Illinois makes that clear. The last governor is in prison. The entire state and city government is a pay-to-play bribery operation.

Just like you don’t go to a whorehouse for the stained glass windows, you don’t go to Tony Rezko for coffee and donuts.

But, yes, I would be terribly saddened if somehow, in what would be so obviously nothing more than terrible slanderous lying efforts to save their own skin, both Rezko and Blagojevich rolled on The One Whose Name Must Not Be Spoken.

Yet, it would be somewhat gratifying if that already declared Knight of the Roundtable, Patrick Fitzgerald, were the one to take their obvious lies and slanders and hurl those accusations forward against the purity and obvious innocence of The One Whose Name Must Not Be Spoken.

In a deposition under oath in front of a federal judge who had instructed him to answer the question in a federal civil rights case in which he was the defendant and which case was ordered to go forward by a 9-0 decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in a country in which he was the Chief Executive charged with the execution of the law.

Whoa, slow down there Kimo Sabe, Clinton lied to the American public about his consensual sex, but he was found not guilty of lying under oath in his Senate trial and there were never any charges against him outside of the Senate trial, nor did he plead guilty or admit being guilty of perjury..

You know, that whole "eyes of the LAW" thing.

Or do you have some different law, where you are the judge?

But, if you really want to understand what happened (though I am sure you don’t), I suggest you read "The Hunting of the President". It’s a well documented investigative work that details exactly what happened, how, and who did what to whom.

Especially interesting is when the Special Prosecutor held Monica Lewinsky in a hotel room, threatening with imprisoning her, and her mother, for up to 27 years, and illegally questioning her without her retained legal counsel.

There was a crime here, and it was a bit more than lying about consensual sex in a case where the judge in the case where the affair was brought up, ruled it irrelevant.

This was criminal!

This was a political hit job.
The "perjury trap" set for the President by the IOC has been criticized even by a respected federal judge, and Reagan appointee, Richard A. Posner. In his book, An Affair of State: The Investigation, Impeachment, and Trial of President Clinton, Posner writes: "To conduct a sting operation against the President of the United States, in concert with the President’s partisan enemies, is certainly questionable as a matter of sound enforcement policy. It is also a potent argument against the independent counsel law, without which such a scheme would be unthinkable."
I was never a Clinton fan, but I was also never so partisan of a Republican not to see what was happening. Some folks just wanted Clinton’s head (no pun intended), and left all manner of decency and fairness bleeding on the ground.
Don’t ever play that card again, it is obscene

a) Not have an affair witht he 22 y.o. intern; or
b) tell the truth aobut it....
as Clinton admitted that he was attempting to give factually correct answers that would still provide cover for his deeds, he was giving lawyer answers, in hopes of mis-directing the investigation...

Perjury trap, is that like a bank robbery trap, you know where there’s a bank full of money and they put this bank out into the real world and then it entices me to rob it? Or the hooker trap, you knnow where the $275 a night hooker is walking the streets and lures me away from my partner? Or the Liquor Trap, wherein the bartender establishes a bar on my path home and forces vile liquor down my throat?

You realize Clinton was sued under a law he signed, right.... had he not signed thta law, he’d naever have been sued, and there would ahave been no trap to evade...Karma.

Nice try at camoflaging a fact in a passel of fictions.

Obama spent twenty years — most of his adult life — as a congregant at a church (Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago) where the teaching is explicitly based on "black theology." For those unfamiliar with the discussion hereabouts, "black theology" is both racist and black supremacist.

A white politician who belonged to an equivalent white racist church would have been justly hooted off the national stage in a heartbeat.

Someone, including perhaps Obama himself, can claim that Obama didn’t believe what his church taught, but the next question after that is "then why did he belong to a church that taught that?" Even the answer to that wouldn’t explain why he exposed his two children to that teaching.

His excuse seems to be that he went to those Klan rallies because his inspiring uncle Jeremiah was the Grand Imperial Wizard but that he never lit any of the crosses.

Trying to sandwich that fact in with that other crap in that quote above is just what can be expected from the people who want that fact to disappear. But that fact is not going to disappear, because it is a very very important fact to the watching of every move that Obama makes going forward.

Much like the fact that Obama comes out of an extremely corrupt political machine in Chicago, as evidenced by the subject of this thread.

No, probably not, but having read a huge amount of material on the subject, from both sides, I’d wager that I am far more informed as to what happened during the 90’s Clinton investigations. It started when I thought he was guilty, and the facts swayed me, not ideology.

I’m not saying that at all. I’m simply saying that corruption is widespread, because the incentive structure of politics encourages it. Some are able to resist the temptations involved. Clearly, others are not.

I do claim that there are plenty who never get caught, but that’s not the same as saying they all participate in corruption.

Of course there isn’t even any smoke, much less fire, where Obama is concerned, but hey, if guilt by association is all you’ve got, and you are incapable of not being on the attack, then this is the only avenue you have.

I’d be surprised if you said anything different than this.

Are you sure Obama didn’t kill Vince Foster?
But the Whitewater investigation covered more than just Bill Clinton. A bunch of people went to prison. Susan McDougal went to prison, rather than talk...and she was pardoned by Bill Clinton. Yeah, that’s as pure as the driven snow.
Wow, this is willfully and egregiously dishonest. Susan McDougal told the special prosecutor everything she could and had no intention or desire to go to prison, but what she was not willing to do, and the reason she was kept in prison, was that she would not make a false statement under oath implicating the Clinton’s in something they didn’t do.
MCDOUGAL: A lot of it I do think had to do with growing up in a household that thought of America as a great place, growing up with a certain belief system. And seeing in the meetings I had with them, they could have cared less who was innocent and who was guilty. They simply wanted to get him. And the stories changed as they went along. And watching Jim McDougal after we were convicted, he tried to save himself. And I was at his house one night, and I said, “What are we going to do?” We were just a week away from sentencing. We had gone to trial. We had not made a deal. In fact, of all the people having to do with Whitewater, Jim McDougal and I were the only two people who did not make a deal, who did not cooperate from the very beginning and say that the Clintons were guilty of something. And Jim had been saying they were innocent all along. And he said, “You know? I don’t want to die in prison. And I am going to cooperate. I think we should cooperate. What have they ever done for us, anyway?” And I said, “I can’t do that, but I understand.”

He was much older than I; he had been in ill health. And I was really happy that he had come to something that might save him years in prison. And he called them on the phone while I was there. And he said, “This is Jim McDougal, and I’ve decided I will cooperate. But there are a few things you have to agree to before I will say that the Clintons were guilty of this.” And he said, “I need a year before I go to prison so I can get my affairs in order.” And he gave me this thumbs up, you know, that it was no problem. And he said with the phone up to his ear, “We’re totally broke. We don’t even have a car to drive.” He said he was going to need some walking around money. And he gave me a thumbs up—no problem. They could give him that. [He said,] “I’ll need a car and driver. I don’t have a car; I’m in ill health. When I have meetings with you, you’ll have to come and pick me up and drive me around.” No problem. Thumbs up. And he said, “I’ll need a hospital. I’m a sick man.” No problem.

God, I was so grateful. Because this was a man I had cared about, and whom I did not want to see hurt. And he talked with them a while longer, hung up the phone, and said, “You’re not going to believe what they said. They said that because I have consistently said that the Clintons were innocent, that now that I’m going to change my story, what they’re going to do is say that Starr will come down and talk to this Baptist minister, who’s the judge—the sentencing judge—and he’s going to say that like Saul on the road to Damascus, you had this blinding light, and you’ve now become this Christian man, and now you’re going to tell the truth. And that’s the story we’re going to use.” And it so turned my stomach to hear Jim McDougal talk like that, because he would have been the first person in another life to hate that—that use of Christianity in order to get something.

In the weeks that ensued after that, he would encourage me, too, to cooperate, that it was going to be the best way, that they were going to give me some money. They would send me to Europe and hide me out until it was time to testify. I’d be protected. And I would have money to spend. And it would be—we would be together again. We would testify against the Clintons. And I said, “Jim, they’re going to kill us. This is not true. This is the President of the United States. When we go to trial, they’re going to have lawyers. They’re going to have proof that this money never went anywhere near the Clintons. And it’s a lie. They’re going to make us look like liars, and we’re going to forever be these bad people who lied. And he said, “They’re giving me the documents, Susan.” Meaning the independent counsel was giving him the documents to spin these stories around.

And as Jim met with them time after time, he was becoming this terrible person. And he’d kind of laugh, and he’d say, “Remember that time we went to their house, or the governor’s mansion? Doesn’t that sound like a great story? We’ll say that that was when we hatched the scheme.” And watching him turn into, sort of, this—car dog is the think that comes to my mind—he was a lap dog to what they wanted him to say. And they were telling him what a great job he was doing. And they were giving him money and things we hadn’t had in a very long time. And we were so broken by the conviction and the fact that we had nothing left—everything we had in the world was gone—except the fact that we were telling the truth, which didn’t seem to matter very much, and to see him turn into this person who was willing to lie and laugh about it, and to tell jokes about it, was really what made me, more than any other thing, say to myself: I will never have anything to do with those people. Never will I become that person that I see Jim becoming.

And the fact that I loved him and saw him become this person, was really the catalyst for me. I remember the night before I went to jail, I sat down with my seven brothers and sisters, my Mom and Dad; my Mom was Belgian and had been though the war and my Dad was a soldier, and I remember people were saying, “She knows something. She’s hiding something. She’s probably getting payoffs. There were all sorts of things being said in the media on both sides. And I remember my Mom said to me—this tiny little lady, only five-feet tall; I had been taller than her since I was in the fourth grade—she said, “Isn’t there anything you know about them that you could say that would be the truth? That you could trade? That would be truthful and you could live with?” And I looked at her and I said, “I don’t know a thing those people have ever done that was illegal, immoral, wrong.” And I remember, she stood up, and said, “It’s what Hitler did: He would turn people against other people and make them testify against them. And send them to concentration camps and threaten them if they didn’t.” And she said, “If we beat that guy, we can beat this guy.”

And it was literally my little family and me making this decision that I would not talk to them, and that instead I would go to jail. And I said that they were going to put me in jail if I don’t testify and if I don’t cooperate with the grand jury that he’s got there. And it was literally just us sitting there that night, all of us crying. We never even knew anyone who had gone to jail, you know? It was that night that really was the crux of why I had the strength I had not to cooperate.
No, the Clinton’s are not pure as the driven snow, they are politicians, slick and slimy as they can be within the law, and I’ve never voted for either of them. But that doesn’t change the fact that what was done in the 90’s makes this whole BDS meme look like apathy.

I do claim that there are plenty who never get caught, but that’s not the same as saying they all participate in corruption.
Well, with a second governor in a row headed to the slammer on bribery charges, Illinois seems to have a leg up with respect to the number of its politicians who participate.

But let’s be fair, as Steverino suggests, because surely not every Chicago politician who had Tony Rezko make a real estate "arrangement" for him did so in a corrupt fashion. Why, there must have been any number of high-ranking Illinois elected officials who had perfectly innocent transactions with Rezko.

For a while, every single former Governor in IL was either in prison, or had served time. I think the Gov before last is the first in a long line to NOT do time.

Really, it’s tradition here. It can’t be helped, what with needing Chicago’s support. You end up dirty due to exposure.

That’s funny, because I could have sworn that just yesterday I saw the "ad that McCain refused to run" being aired on Fox.

It featured Jeremiah Wright.

So, clearly it hasn’t "disappeared," nor will it ever disappear, not until history itself disappears, because it is an essential fact related to the character of Barack Obama.

The church based on the racist and black supremacist "black theology" that he remained a congregant in for most of his adult life, and took his two children to.

Now wait a minute. Let’s be clear here. You could not possibly be insinuating that He Who Must Not Be Named could have, in the remotest scintilla of possibility, been even the very most reluctant participant in the Illinois political money sports.

Surely, His relationship with Tony Rezko involved no lowering of His High Principles, but only elevated the slob Rezko, as must all be elevated who interact with He Who Must Not Be Named.

Obama must be made to give a deposition.

As should every member of his transition team, his preferred candidates for that seat, and every scrap of email/phone logs etc. documenting his communications with the Gov. need to be scrutinized.

Scooter Libby says hello to all of them. And to Obama sycophants.

Merry Fitzmas everyone! (Too bad I can’t meld Fitzgerald with Chaunkkah well enough lol)

I’ll call your deposition, and raise you a grand jury appearance.

(But a grand jury appearance strictly in the capacity of a good law-abiding citizen, of course, who, under absolutely no suspicion Himself, surely only wants to aid the cause of justice in the great state of Illinois, where, admittedly, He fell a little short in flight testing his "Change you can believe in!" before bringing it to the nation as a whole.)

Ironicly, today is International Anti-Corruption Day
The United Nations’ (UN) International Anti-Corruption Day aims to raise public awareness of corruption and what people can do to fight it. It is observed on December 9 each year.

International Anti-Corruption Day is a time for political leaders, governments, legal bodies and lobby groups to work together against corruption work by promoting the day and the issues that surround this event. On this day anti-corruption advocates organize events to engage the general public to effectively fight against corruption and fraud in communities.

This AP story is interesting:
In Chicago, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said prosecutors were making "no allegations" that Obama was aware of any scheming.

And Blagojevich himself, in taped conversations cited by prosecutors, suggested that Obama wouldn’t be helpful to him. Even if the governor was to appoint a candidate favored by the Obama team, Blagojevich said, "they’re not willing to give me anything except appreciation."
And then:
In a Nov. 11 phone conversation with an aide, Blagojevich talked at length about "Candidate 1" and said he knew that Obama wanted her for the open seat but "they’re not willing to give me anything except appreciation. (Expletive) them."
That sounds exculpatory on first blush, but in the context of "they’re not willing to give me anything" is there an implication that "they" were asked?

Then this:
More details on the case could be forthcoming.

Court documents say they don’t include all calls dealing with the governor’s efforts regarding the Senate seat appointment. And many people in the documents are referred to by aliases; there’s little doubt their identities will eventually surface.

In Chicago, Obama largely kept a low profile as word of Blagojevich’s arrest spread.

He went to a gym to work out as he does most mornings but canceled a previously scheduled FBI briefing and, instead, headed to his transition office next door to the federal courthouse. He stayed there and mostly out of sight until a midday meeting with former Vice President Al Gore on environmental and energy issues. That was supposed to be the news of the day out of the Obama office but the president-elect found himself peppered with questions about Blagojevich when reporters entered the Gore meeting for a photo op.

"Like the rest of the people of Illinois I am saddened and sobered by the news that came out of the U.S. attorney’s office today. But as this is an ongoing investigation involving the governor, I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to comment on the issue at this time," Obama said - and then he said he wasn’t aware of Blagojevich’s maneuvering.

Robert Gibbs, an Obama spokesman, said: "We did not know about this recent part of the investigation until today."
All of that section is interesting, and in fact in its implications very tough coverage from AP. But that last sentence is the most interesting. If Gibbs knows the truth and is telling it, Team Obama was blindsided by this. They didn’t expect the part about the governor looking for a high bid on the appointment to Obama’s senate seat. Now, if the indicted governor asked them for something in return for appointing someone Obama wanted, and they didn’t report that, the governor has a chip in the game himself. Something he can give the prosecutor.

Many people warned against a presidential candidate from the Chicago Democratic machine. At best, this is a really bad news cycle for the Office of the President-elect.

At worst, Blagojevich was acting like this because he thought no one would ever touch him because of Obama and whatever he, Blagojevich, might have saved for a rainy day. He could throw something to Fitzgerald that would, well, roll that New Camelot set right off the stage.

I have to note, there seem to be places where they don’t find corruption, and then they find that it’s been going on for 40 years, but in Chicago, they seem to send up the river pretty regularly. Look at Alaska, they came pretty close to electing a convicted felon. I know this is a contrarian view, but perhaps Chicago is LESS tolerant of corruption, and that’s why they put so many corrupt pols away. It’s not a point I’ll defend, just throwing it out there.
That’s funny, because I could have sworn that just yesterday I saw the "ad that McCain refused to run" being aired on Fox.
There’s always going to wingnuts and those who serve them their daily dose of disturbia, Sean Hannity opens his show with Wright and Farrakhan, and to you and the couple of million fringy types, this is story one all day every day, but for America, this has disappeared.

The ad that never aired is a footnote in electoral history, just as this meme is, just as I told it would be.

When the Wright stuff was in full swing, you said...
This man’s candidacy is over and done with, whether he or anyone else has yet realized it.
And I correctly noted...
And by the way, though I am disgusted that this particular group has sunk so low, I do not expect this smear to succeed. We’ll find out soon enough, but expect that this episode will backfire on Obama’s opponents and he will be stronger two weeks from now that he was two weeks ago.

Perhaps I have too much faith in the American people, but I believe that they can see through this for what it is.
So the guy that has had it right all along is telling you, the guy who has had it wrong all along, again, this is dead, gone, disappeared, nothing. It’s Vince Foster.

Funny. Someone referring to Fox’s coverage of Obama’s years in a racist "black theology" church as serving wingnuts.

Jeremiah Wright, and the people who go to his church, are the wingnuts, pal. People who go to a church where the foundational teaching is that whites are devils and that blacks are the chosen people, and that God must be black otherwise blacks would have no use for him.

You’re next step down from that would have to be a voodoo cult. Wingnuts, indeed.
The ad that never aired is a footnote in electoral history,
The fact that Obama went to that church for 20 years is a chapter in contemporary history which is never going to go away for the simple reason that it is a glaring contradiction of the standards of the civil rights era in America.

Holy moly.

This New York Times article, while trying to muster the best apology it can for Obama, reopens the whole Chicago mess that dogged him during the campaign. It starts out by pointing out how Obama intervened in Illinois state politics during his presidential campaign to get a tough new ethics law enacted.

But then it recites the grimmer facts, and they never have and never will sound good:
When he ran for the United States Senate in 2004, he aggressively courted Mr. [Emil] Jones, [described earlier in the article as Obama’s political mentor] a sewer inspector turned legislator who had clawed his way up through ward politics and was viewed as something of a kingmaker in the Illinois Democratic Party. He also formed a good working relationship with Mayor Richard M. Daley of Chicago, a symbol of establishment politics with whom Mr. Obama had never been close.

Mr. Obama was an adviser to Mr. Blagojevich’s first campaign for governor, in 2002, and endorsed him again in 2006, even though by that time questions had been raised about the possible selling of state jobs. Mr. Obama has also credited one of Mr. Blagojevich’s closest confidants, Antoin Rezko, a businessman who was convicted of corruption charges this year, with helping him get his own start in politics.

Mr. Rezko was among the first to contribute to Mr. Obama’s earliest State Senate race, in 1995, and later became a major fund-raiser for his campaign for the United States Senate. Mr. Rezko was known around Chicago as a collector of politicians, and he did not hesitate to make the most of his high-level contacts. The New York Times reported last year that when he was entertaining Middle Eastern financiers at a Four Seasons hotel in Chicago, he arranged for Mr. Blagojevich and Mr. Obama to drop by, separately and on different occasions, to impress his guests.

Mr. Rezko derived his political influence mainly from his close relationship with Mr. Blagojevich, who relied on him to recommend loyal campaign contributors for state appointments to boards and commissions, according to the complaint unsealed on Tuesday. But as Mr. Rezko’s legal troubles escalated, Illinois politicians who had previously found him useful, including Mr. Obama, disavowed him and started returning his campaign donations.
So, the storyline for the day is that Obama and Blagojevich, you know, were just not that close. They didn’t have that special chemistry.

But the fact is that they shared the fixer Rezko, described as "one of Mr. Blagojevich’s closest confidants." Now, Rezko has caught the felony conviction and rolled on Blagojevich, who is indicted today of course.

Who is Blagojevich going to roll on, if anyone?

There’s this old joke about two lawyers out hunting in the woods. They encounter a grizzly bear and one lawyer says to the other lawyer "let’s run." And the other lawyer says "you’re betting you can outrun the bear?"

"No," the first lawyer says, "I’m betting I can outrun you."

Only in your deepest wishes.

That’s 20 years in the life of the man just elected President of the United States.

The fact that the mass media never did a proper job of dealing with Obama’s church and its racist "black theology" during the campaign (how could they when Cindy McCain’s onetime painkiller addiction and Sarah Palin’s nonexistent scandals required such focused attention) doesn’t mean that it is "gone."

Who do you think you are? The guy who sat in the Kremlin basement and airbrushed purged comrades out of photographs with Stalin?

This is a fact: Obama attended for 20 years, in later years with his children, a church in Chicago, the Trinity United Church of Christ, whose pastor Jeremiah Wright explicitly states that the teachings of the church are based in "black theology," a racist and black supremacist and Marxist ideology first promoted in the works of one James Cone.

Facts like that don’t go away.

"How much has been spent on those open ended special prosecutor investigations on Bush?"

Maybe because there was nothing to prosecute? No perjury, sexual harassment/perversion, etc.

There was a lot spent by Dan Rather & friends on investigating all those ’fake but accurate’ charges.

"Consensual sex and lying about it."

Am I the only one to remember all those witnesses testifying before Congress about their convictions and jail terms for doing the same?

"Perjury trap"?

Please. As I recall, he giving a deposition for the sexual harassment lawsuit brought by Paula Jones, a standard and perfectly legitimate procedure.

"The investigation of accusations that Bill Clinton did anything illegal with respect to Whitewater"

My favorite incident from that was when Clinton was on the hook for an unaccounted for $20,000 transaction, and he finally remembered that he had loaned it to his mother and had forgotten about it. On a Governor’s salary of less than $60,000.

"where of course, he was acquitted."

So was OJ.

"she would not make a false statement under oath implicating the Clinton’s in something they didn’t do."

Nonsense. Just how would the prosecutor prove she had made a false statement unless he had evidence independent of her statement, in which cawe he would not need her statement?

************************
"Who is Blagojevich going to roll on, if anyone?"

Maybe noone. Just from what little I heard on the news, this guy is either incredibly stupid or incredibly confident that he could get away with it. What with appeals and all, he probably won’t go to jail for years, if ever. It may be interesting to see who gets Presidential pardons on Jan. 19, 2013.

Though the response to Obama coming to campaign for the Dem would be pure win.

The prosecutor would not know if she made a false statement, but would know if her statement did not agree with her husbands statement, which Susan McDOugal knew to be false, and David Hale’s statement, which Susan McDOugal knew to be false. The government needed Susan McDOugal’s testimony because both Jim McDOugal and David Hale’s testimony against Clinton were part of plea bargains to reduce their punishment for crimes they were already convicted of.

Susan McDougal was virtually tortured to get her to lie about Bill Clinton.

Yeah, there were crimes all right, but not by Clinton.

... (Etc etc)

Oh, come on, Cap. You’re already in desperation mode? this doesn’t bode well for the discussions of the next four years. (Well, OK< we’ll get a good laugh out of this, anwyay)

Consider McPhillips point again, in this light:
Obama spent twenty years — most of his adult life — as a congregant at a church (Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago) where the teaching is explicitly based on "black theology." For those unfamiliar with the discussion hereabouts, "black theology" is both racist and black supremacist.

A white politician who belonged to an equivalent white racist church would have been justly hooted off the national stage in a heartbeat.
All true. But here’s where I bounce off Martn’s point and to the topic of this post; If the idea that Obama was unaware of what was going on in the church he’s spent his entire adult life in, and what their teaching was stretches credulity, how are we to take his (And your) claims of innocence here, when clearly, he’s up to his eyeballs in the Chicago political scene, and has been so since the day his career was launched in Bill Ayers’ living room??
