No Contract Negotiations ’til 2011? Fine - No Money ’til 2011
Posted by: McQ on Sunday, December 14, 2008

In all of the "Republicans Senators are racists and don't want American workers to earn high wages" nonsense that's been blowing around the leftosphere, Megan McArdle reminds us of the one salient point that seems to have been missed:
I'm hearing the truly bizarre argument that the UAW didn't scuttle the negotiations; it was the Republicans unreasonable insistence that they cut their wages to levels comparable to that of their competition. After all, the UAW was perfectly willing to negotiate their compensation package—in 2011, when their current contract expires.

And I think that's perfectly reasonable. We'll just wait until 2011 to give them the money, then.
You see, as McArdle points out, GM won't be here in 2011 if the current situation persists. So it makes sense, at least to the rational among us, that changes in the UAW contract must happen now, not 2011 - that is, if they want money now. It is no different than insisting that the car companies come up with an acceptable plan for the money. Why not the UAW as well?

Now, I'm not arguing that they should get the money. In fact, as regular readers know, I'm completely against it. But it is odd that the UAW somehow thinks it's exempt from doing anything necessary to cut costs and stem the bleeding until their precious contract runs out. Even more odd is their apparent belief that given their refusal, they can then blame the failure of the present negotiations on Republicans and get away with it.

Probably the UAW figure the Big 3 are screwed anyway and there is no point in taking a pay cut if it won’t save their jobs.

Of course they think they can get away with blaming the Republicans. Can you locate a single major newspaper that didn’t put the blame for the Thursday night defeat of the bailout plan in the Senate — which 10 Republicans voted for — on the GOP?

Has a single newspaper or broadcast news outlet pointed a finger at the UAW?

One of the commenters at Megans said the UAW plan was to survive long enough to get card check, then unionize the transplant factories. After that if GM fails, like a parasite they can leave the old host body and migrate to the new one.

LOL too true. Patterico has the story of the LAT, who actually lied to readers to make that point.

Which again illustrates that the GOPs biggest initiative starting on Jan 20th is to educate the voters that the Dems are in charge of everything, and that they’re basically a powerless minority.

I take one good thing away from all this "auto bailout" baloney.

Even now, in the midst of a severe economic downturn, the plan to save potentially 2-3 million jobs with a government bailout was unpopular with a vast number of the American people - even 52% of union households were against it. Imagine that!

So, next year, when the auto companies come back for more money, and more money, and more money, Obama and the Democrapheads can give them tons of dough. And the slavish media will have no choice but to report it. Car sales will not improve - if anything, they will get worse as confidence in these companies dries up further - and the further bailouts will become more and more unpopular.

In 2010, the GOP should run on "no more bailouts for Obama’s friends. Vote Republican to stop the Democrats and their spending spree."
