Prejudiced much?
Posted by: Dale Franks on Monday, December 29, 2008

James Wolcott's piece in Vanity Fair starts out with this hilarious witticism:
In angry retaliation for the house arrest of Bernie Madoff, Israel has launched a hellacious air assault against Hamas in Gaza...
Get it? Because Bernie Madoff is a Jew! And the Israelis are Jews, too! They stick together! See? That's why it's so funny!

I really don't get how Israel is the bad guy in this deal. If the Mexican government was lobbing 88 mike-mikes at Brownsville for a few days, The Big Red One would be camping out in Chapultepec by the weekend, while the USAF delivered "hot tamales" to Cuidad Mexico.

The Palestinians—or Hamas, to be more precise—want to be able to commit repeated acts of war against the Israelis then claim "foul" when they get the war they've been asking for.

Barak also cited a comment made by U.S. President-elect Barack Obama, who visited Sderot during his election campaign earlier this year.

“Obama said that if rockets were being fired at his home while his two daughters were sleeping, he would do everything he could to prevent it,” Barack told the plenum.

The defense minister went on to say that Israel is engaged in a “war to the bitter end” against Hamas in Gaza.
This speech seems destined to be fodder for David Letterman’s great Presidential speeches.

Hamas does, not all Palestinians do. So why even mention Palestinians in this sentence? Why? Seriously, wtf is your problem? Why not just say Hamas?

The answer is obvious. Sick. Just sick.

Ironically, this is the title of your post, Dale.

As a libertarian, it’s important to identify who the first aggressor truly is.

To roughly paraphrase Murray Rothbard, we cannot immediately say that Jones is always wrong to attack Smith, a priori. For instance, Smith may have initiated the violence, and Jones is merely defending himself and/or property.

If we look at the limited case of the last several years, then yes, Hamas (not Palestine) would be the aggressor, and Israel would be justified in its current bombing.

However if we, as Rothbard does in "For a New Liberty", examine the historical antecedents of this quagmire, the picture is less clear. How was Israel initially formed? By UN decree, a notion that libertarians would no doubt abhor. Who originally had property rights to this area? Even more nebulous...

Ultimately, both States are terrorist organizations preying upon their citizens, so it’s a moot point.

Yeah, but one of them is not prone to launching rockets at the other whenever it’s bored, so I’m gonna side with the folks that generally just leave the other dude alone.

Could it be that Hamas is a Palestinian organization? Could it be that Hamas represents Palestinians in Gaza? Could it be the Palestinian people voted Hamas into the position of political dominance in Gaza? Could it be Hamas has been open and vocal about its aims and intent regarding Israel? Could it be that you don’t have a friggin’ clue?

Gee John. Maybe we should give the US back to the native american indians. How about give China and Russia over to Mongolian rule since they rule that area for quite a while.

Shall we reconstruct the British empire? How about put all of Europe under Roman rule since they had property rights to the area about the same time Israel was formed originally.

You need to look at the situation now.

The UN is great when it is condeming Israel but when it formed Israel it was a bad idea right.

Once again the left wants to cherry pick instead of dealing with entire picture as it is today.

And that statement sums up the moral bankruptcy and utter lunacy of the Rothbardian Movement...on one hand a group that has reintroduced CRUCIFIXTION and on the other a group that tolerates open homosexuality...but to Rothbardians, they BOTH are terrorist groups....and people wonder why An-Cap’ism isn’t the dominant political theory of our age?

While I take your point, I wonder about Mexico as an example, given we’re already being subjected to a soft invasion there... which we are already encouraging under a supposedly republican preisdent. I can’t imagine that sitrep changing under Obama.

This quote from a Ace of Spades HQ post sums up the whole Middle East problem for me - good guys, bad guys, everything:

"It’s been said before but it is worth repeating a thousand times: if Hamas, Hezbollah, and most of the Arab states (and Iran) laid down their weapons tomorrow and forgot about their plans to dissolve Israel, there would be peace in the Middle East. The Israelis could forget about the fences and the Palestinians might one day have something approximating a Western standard of living. On the other hand, if Israel laid down its weapons tomorrow, the country would be utterly annihilated, the Israelis killed to the last man, woman, and child."

Imagine if someone on the right wrote the following:

"To get back at decades of racial turmoil in Africa, President Barack Obama let some white people drown in a hurricane that struck the South today."

The anger, the hatred, of the person who wrote this would be on everyone’s lips.

Yet, somehow, crass anti-Semitism, and linking "those Jews" together because one of us is a crook (and does a black crook make all blacks crooks? Or a Hispanic crook? Or an Oriental crook?). This pr!ck should be fired, and now.

I went on Vanity Fair’s site and sent them the following letter:

Mr. Wolcott writes in his blog, "In angry retaliation for the house arrest of Bernie Madoff, Israel has launched a hellacious air assault against Hamas in Gaza..."

Now, imagine if I wrote, "To get back at decades of racial turmoil in Africa, President Barack Obama let some white people drown in a hurricane that struck the South today."

That would be condemned as "racially insensitive." Yet Wolcott’s blaming of Jews for one Jew’s thievery smacks to me of gross and blatant anti-Semitism at its worst. Wow, it must be all of those Jews. They all stick together. They steal from "other" people and then bomb "other" people.

Mr. Madoff’s thievery aside, Israel is not hitting the Gaza Strip because of him. They are hitting Gaza because it is run by a terrorist group out for Israel’s destruction.

That you have a slimeball racist on your staff may be fine to you, but to a Jew like myself his pathetic words are highly insulting and smack of bigotry at its worst.

I will not waste any time buying your rag when you employ racists and bigots. Shame on you for letting him spout off his racism, and shame on you for not firing his bigoted ass as soon as possible. He should be a smoky hole in the floor right about now.

James Marsden
Miami, Florida

That such bigotry is tolerated by the Left is not a surprise. That it goes unreported amongst fellow leftists is also no surprise. They hate racists, until they see one in the mirror.

Anti-Jew sentiment has been a pretty large staple of the left’s playbook for a long time now. The only people who seem to not notice it are Jews.

Because the Palestinians elected Hamas to run their government, so apparently a majority shares Hamas’ aims and goals.

Dale,

To be fair, the Palestinians in Gaza elected Hamas. Those on the West Bank did not.

So rather than Madoff being a crook who happens to be a jew (a reality) and having ZERO to do with Gaza/Hamas and free rockets over ground, we get the idea that Israel is attacking Hamas because Madoff is a jew who happens to be a crook. Okay spanky! That makes sense.
Do you walk to school, or do you carry your lunch?

Not all Palestinians....uh huh....they elected Hamas.
Not every German was a NAZI, but that didn’t stop us from leveling every major German city we could put planes over.
When your government chooses the path of war you should expect to reap what your government sows.

How the Israeli’s are (once again) at fault for defending themselves is (once again) beyond me, so Dude, why don’t you dig up the headlines and factoids outlining Israel’s random artillery and air strikes on Gaza that preceded the response of Hamas making random missile attacks on Israel so we can better understand your view of reality.

Except for the few blinded by religion and their Torah-given right to a piece of land, most Jews are smart cookies. They’re also mostly liberal.

So TomD, you’re saying the smart Jews are the ones who are liberal and don’t want to hold the land they have lived in for 3,000 years? The land that was re-affirmed to them in 1948 - that they were willing to share even then? The land that they’ve defended successfully against enemies in many wars since 1948? The land that they’ve built into a booming and blooming 1st world economy that grants religious freedom in its borders and allows freedom of speech? The land that never sends out its children with bombs strapped around their waists to kill others’ children on buses, in restaurants, and in stores?

No, much better that the Jews wise up and give the land to its "true" owners who didn’t ever actually have a nation there.

Oh yeah, and try not to get murdered as they run out the door.

Please.

Probably due to its insistence upon logical consistency.

Has everyone forgotten the Arab-Israeli War? They kinda sorta just invaded the land, and now we’re supposed to respect their claim because a few decades have past? Theft is Theft. Murder is Murder. Both States do both with surprising regularity.

Check out the fundies on both sides in Dawkins "Virus of Faith" for some more enlightening views.

You mean its obtuse moral relativism.
Has everyone forgotten the Arab-Israeli War?
Which one?
They kinda sorta just invaded the land,
“They” did? By “they” you mean the Jews, right? So, the Egyptian, Trans-Jordanian and Syrian Armies that invaded Israel in 1948 were NOT interlopers?
and now we’re supposed to respect their claim because a few decades have past?

Uh well, yes…Read Walzer’s Just and Unjust Wars for a nice description of why, under the idea of the Land Follows the People. More personally, you live in Antarctica, right? Because can you show me a morally sound, unimpeachable claim to the land you squat on now, Uber? It’s always been “yours”, right? Not English, and before that French/Dutch/Swedish/Spanish/Mexican and before that not owned/claimed by several tribal groups of Indians…it was ALWAYS yours. You can show this, right? Otherwise, what do we have with your land, but merely the peaceful usurpation of someone else’s property, even if that usurpation occurred decades or even centuries ago?

Obviously any port in a storm when it comes to arguments, right, Uber? Because this is one of the goofiest and NON-Libertarian arguments laying around, because by this argument NO ONE has title to “their” property, undermining the whole concept OF Property Rights. Or have you and Lew Rockwell simply let your anti-Semitism blind you to the deeper truths or fallacies of your argument?
Theft is Theft. Murder is Murder. Both States do both with surprising regularity.
I guess depends on your definition of theft and murder…in Rothbard Land ANY tax is theft and any state-sponsored violence is murder, so I guess in YOUR eyes, eyes safely tucked away from Quessam Rockets this might make some sort of sense. But for the rest of us, seeing that there IS a difference between Israel and Hamas, well I like to think we just think you’re a goof-ball.

Which leads us full circle to the original statement:
"And that statement sums up the moral bankruptcy and utter lunacy of the Rothbardian Movement...on one hand a group that has reintroduced CRUCIFIXTION and on the other a group that tolerates open homosexuality...but to Rothbardians, they BOTH are terrorist groups....and people wonder why An-Cap’ism isn’t the dominant political theory of our age?"

Unlike those OTHER fundies, AGW, or Marxism, or Marxist-Leninism, or Maoism, or the Khmer Rouge. Funny how Dawkins and others don’t see the "Virus of Faith" in its other forms.

And we all know, peace loving peoples always launch random unguided missile attacks to achieve their peace loving goals.

Unguided missiles are the very defintion of Terror Weapon, brought to you by the technical experts of the Third Reich.

So, EXACTLY, what is HAMAS trying to accomplish by randomly firing missile into Israel?
What possible useful, peaceful, rational, purpose could that sort of activity serve?

Wow, TomD you’re absolute ignorance of Zionism is stunning…You realize that the original Zionists WEREN’ T religious, right? They don’t claim a Torah-given right to Israel. The religious Jews, the Orthodox, opposed Zionism as a usurpation of the role of Ywh and the Messiah, only Ywh and the Messiah would return Israel to the Holy Land. Zionism sought a homeland for the Jews, in Canada, in Argentina, in Russia, it didn’t matter…Balfour opened the Holy Land up to the Zionists. Bottom-line: there is no claim that God gave the Jews/Zionists Israel, the UN did and Tzahal preserves that right.

And what does being Liberal have to do with it? Israel is a VERY liberal place, it was run by the Socialist Labour Party for 30 years. What does a national Health Care System and Hisdradut have to do with any of this?

You just like to comment, right, whether it means anything or not.
