The left - drawing false parallels
Posted by: McQ on Sunday, January 04, 2009

Peterr at FireDogLake points to a quote by Munib Younan, bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jordan and the Holy Land in which he likens the security wall Israel erected to the Berlin wall:
[W]ho would have imagined that less than two decades later we would be back to building walls? I have no doubt that the Separation Wall in the Holy Land will one day fall for the same reasons. The only question is how many lives, how many shattered and demolished villages, how much dehumanization and stigmatization will we tolerate?

This Wall is not a sign of justice or peace, it is a material sign of the walls of hatred that are growing stronger everyday. This wall does not provide security, it breeds despair and a culture of separation. And it cannot contain the hatred and resentment that are building every day.
Anyone who can liken a wall erected to keep oppressed citizens in with a wall erected to keep suicidal enemies out simply can't be taken seriously.

But this is a common tactic of the left - attempt to draw parallels between any totalitarian regime and Israel so its attempts at self-defense can then be compared to those oppressive regimes.

Not a single mention of Hamas. Not a single mention of the fact that the West Bank is mostly peaceful. Or that since Israel has erected the wall, Hamas sponsored suicide bombers have largely been unsuccessful in blowing themselves up on buses and in pizza parlors (although they've certainly tried to sneak their martyrs through on numerous occasions). Certainly no mention of the Hamas charter's refusal to negotiate anything, much less peace, with Israel. And constant rocket attacks? Nah. Not important. It's all about "walls" and "violence" being the "tool of the incompetent" - Israeli "violence" of course.

The belief that all Israel has to do is quit being violent and the Palestinians will live in peace with them (because that's what they want) continues to stun and amaze me. Where does that come from? One can only believe that if they have a totally blinkered view of the conflict.

And, where were the protests and UN resolutions when the government of the Palestinians in Gaza, i.e. Hamas, was lobbing 4,000 rockets and thousands of mortar rounds into Israel? Where were the denunciations of "violence" being the "tool of the incompetent" then?

Elements of the left continue to be as misguided about this situation as most of the Hamas rockets.

Peterr concludes:
A week ago, Bishop Younan and a dozen of his ecumenical partners in Jerusalem called for Sunday, January 4, 2009 to be "a day for justice and peace in the land of peace." If that were to happen, it would be a miracle.
No, the miracle would be having Hamas renounce its charter, declare a willingness to advance the peace process and then actually doing that. Until that happens, or Hamas ceases to exist, no peace in the region is possible. It looks like Israel, seeing no possibility of a Hamas renunciation of its charter of violence, has chosen to take the second option.

I wish them success.

Egypt has a security barrier as well. Are they an "aparteid state?" No. Of course not. Egyptians are brown people who hate jews too. Therefore it doesn’t count for some reason.

Yeah, I don’t understand this since these same tools planned to blow up law enforcement at the RNC convention.

And they’re the "reality based" community.

If we hope and wish for peace, it will happen...

See this one where a truck loaded with Qassam rockets blows up accidentally while transporting them and then they fake it to make it look like an IDF attack on poor wittle palestians.

They don’t call it paliwood for nothing

Well the good people of Palestine elected these bums to govern them and they knew who they were and about.

The trouble started with Hamas and Israel will end it. The terrorist just do not want peace. I also believe there is a large element of jealousy toward Israel. This is due to the success that they have had with their economy and standard of living.

It’s unfortunate that hate is the common denominator with the people of Arab countries. Move into the 21st century it’s not a bad place if you stop the hating and killing.

Don’t blame Israel for the current situation, blame yourselves for not stopping it. Also the good bishop should wake up and smell the stench around him, he may very well be a hater too.

It so totally amazes me that people just don’t understand the obvious:

Islam will not rest until the rest of the entire planet bends their knees onto their prayer rugs and prays to Allah seven times (or is it 9?) a day.

The civilized world just can’t understand the they (Muslims) simply will NOT tolerate the existence of ANY other culture.

When the west realizes that Islam, even the "good" followers, must be taken from the earth in order for any peace to exist then we might have a chance.

How is it that Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, and most others can get along just fine and tolerate each other’s existence?

But NOT Islam.

They simply will NOT tolerate the existence of anybody...

It’s discouraging, to say the least, how entirely wrong the left has got the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Perhaps it’s a silly question but, is there any way to reason with them?

Well, I try to bring a little sunshine wherever I go!

But I’m also serious. I feel like I’m living in an Ayn Rand novel, where the left and its allies are conducting themselves like a cartoonishly venal bad guys. A fair number of my friends take that worldview seriously, and I am baffled.

Here’s a good web presentation on the history of Israel and the ongoing Arab attempts to obliterate Israel: What Really Happened.

They got it right in 1967 when support of Israel against the hegemonic, soviet-fuelled military force of the Pan-Arab alliance was considered the most progressive of causes.

At that time, Israel was weak, and was outnumbered 10-1. Since that time, nothing has changed on either side from a moral perspective, but the social proportions have reversed. This time, David is a Philistine and Goliath is a Jew - at least, superficially.

The goal of the left is to afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted. Morals are relative, only material wealth and power are absolute. Every conflict is understood as one of haves vs. have nots, not of good vs. evil or right vs. wrong. Once material equality has been achieved through some UN-mediatied wealth redistribution program, these Islamic militants will naturally abandon their "opiate of the masses" and naturally become proper secular liberals. What a bunch of Bullsh*t.

The so-called "Security Wall" ticks off the Pallies and their willing idiots in the media because this limits the ways that Islamic maggots can go and deliver themselves as human bombs and kill Israelis on buses and in restaurants. This is why Hamas (English for "Sc*m of the Earth") has to settle for firing off rockets that have no guidance system.

This shows the problem with Islamic thinking, which is based on not having any brains. You blow up your enemy, and when he builds a wall to keep you out you fire rockets, and when the enemy comes and destroys the rockets you yell that you are being victimized.

I lived in London for a while, and that place is infested with Muzzies. I was on a bus and some guy tells me, "It amazes me - Muslims wash themselves before each time they pray several times a day, yet they smell worse than a donkey who lived in a sty for twenty years."

He had that right.

As Americans, we have to ask a simple question.....Who the hell started these attacks anyway? People in Israel are being attacked everyday by bombs flying overhead on a daily basis from Gaza. These bombs are hitting innocent people, and Jewish settlements everyday. Does it take a moron to figure out, if you bomb people long enough, they are going to defend themselves? I guess......Iran and Iraq and Palastine are filled with MORONS, because they are saying they want to kill Jews because they are attacking Gaza. What are the jews suppose to do...Line up in the middle of the street and wait to get blown up? Shame on any person, who doesn’t find this a tragedy. I was in Israel, I saw the sorrow, the memorials to innocent women and children killed by these bastards. I say...More power to Israel! May those people who think freely from our distorted mainstream media....Stand up and give Israel our support. And for all those MORONS who want to strap on bombs to their bodies, and attack innocent people, may their bombs detonate in their own house!!!!

This entire argument is ridiculous.

Israel shouldn’t even exist. Being Jewish is a religion, not a race. Zionism and "Jewish" settlements - bunch of baloney.

The only people who deserve their own country are the Native Americans. That won’t ever happen. US citizens wouldn’t want their land seized just because a bureaucrat with a soft spot for Indians wants to give it away.

If it did happen, Lord knows US citizens would fight to the death before surrendering their property.

Dr. Victor Hanson, as usual, comes through with an excellent column responding to the typical anti-Israel questions. Here’s a sample:
4. Well then, why is the world supporting Hamas, and not Israel—if, as you say, Israel enjoys the moral high ground?

The better question would be, why would Israel gain world support? After all, the world is mostly authoritarian in Russia, China, and much of Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America; when has it ever been a barometer of morality? If it had been, some would have rallied to stop the murder of 6 million Jews during the Holocaust, or stopped the Rwandan killing or the Cambodian genocide. Only the US and its NATO allies put an end to Milosevic, the Taliban in Afghanistan, and Saddam—mostly to world criticism.

It’s funny to see these lefties comparing the security wall in Israel to the Berlin Wall. They forget that during the cold war they never criticized that wall. That was a pretty good idea then to help stop the spread of Western-imperialist-capitalist-paternalist-etc-etc....
