Jennifer Rubin at Commentary, finds the same Maureen Dowd who spent so many words denigrating Sarah Palin and worrying about her supposed lack of qualifications having a much different reaction to the properly connected, politically acceptable but woefully unqualified Carolyn "you know" Kennedy's desire for the vacated Hillary Clinton Senate seat.
Sensing that the tide has turned against Caroline Kennedy, Maureen Dowd rides to her rescue. Dowd coos:
I know Caroline Kennedy. She’s smart, cultivated, serious and unpretentious. The Senate, shamefully sparse on profiles in courage during Dick Cheney’s reign of terror, would be lucky to get her.
You sense that between the second and third sentences Dowd was sorely tempted to insert: “Just like me!”

So now, with the election safely behind us and Sarah Palin tucked away back in Alaska, the truth can be told. Identity politics is not, in itself, objectionable — it just depends on the identity. Not okay: small town, funny accent, overt religiosity, non-tony education. Okay: Manhattan address, Ivy League, discreet attire, impeccable lineage. (In other words, just like Dowd’s inner circle.)
Rubin nails the pretentious media snob to the wall - and most of the other Palin critics as well. You have to assume the irony was completely lost on Dowd.

Jennifer Rubin is a marvel! Definitely my fave commentator over at Commentary. Here’s the link to her piece: Just Like Me!.

Hasn’t anyone told Rubin that Dowd and the other members of the Cocoon can do or say anything they want, regardless of factual basis (or lack thereof) or logical consistency? They’re exempt from the rules of discourse that govern us mere mortals. Why? Because they’re so gosh-darn compassionate!

All of the nation is this way. Wonder why we only see the same old tired remakes and plots reused in Hollywood? It is not because there are no new ideas or stories out there, it is because the entertainment industry is, like the news industry, a nepotistic, inbred cesspool. If you went to the right schools, if you have an aunt or uncle in the business, if you dress and vote the right way THEN you can get your script read.

This, of course goes on in other industries as well. I am familiar with the oil industry. If you have a degree from LSU, Oklahoma, or Texas, and your dad worked in the industry, then it is much easier to get hired and promoted.

The hypocrisy is that the left wingers in the Infotainment industries would be the first ones to decry the oil industry as a "good old boy" network.

Iowahawk has probably the best skewer of Caroline and her ilk.
Senora Kennedy she is from famous senator family. Senora Kennedy father was El Presidente. She have tio who is senator. She have many cousin who also is senator, even all the ones with the drug problems. Why she is only one who no is senator? This is no fair to her. In my old country was the law that all family of el Presidente is also Senator or Minister until the revolucion.

Senora Kennedy is many plaques. She have a diploma from the Senator school and many trophies. She have many famous photografias and autografias. I know this because I have to clean her office every Tuesday and is very hard for to dust all this many things.

Senora Kennedy have very many busy jobs. She is edit the book for the children and the poetry. She also choose the winners for the many awards she is boss for. It is make her very tired, but every day Senora is go to work for the volunteer to raise the money for the awards and the charity. She have many parties at the home and the museum. She work very hard to shop for the new gowns and invitacions. She is also make the seating arrange and hide the tequila from Tio Teddy so he not get borracho. This she do for the poor.

Senora Kennedy she is the good mother. She is raise her two girls by herself, with the nannies, and every night read the girls the poetry book she edit. The nannies are go now because the girls they also are go off now to Senator school.

I have to wonder if Dick Cheney’s reign of terror was so terrible, how did we end up with more Democratic Senators than Republican Senators while he was reigning?

How did that happen?
What kind of evil dark lord dictator is he if he throws a reign of terror worth mentioning, but it comes apart by the simple virtue of people voting for the candidates they want and THEN HE LETS THEM SERVE!

Cheney should take lessons from Robert Mugabe, he knows how to keep an election in his pocket (is it okay to mention him, he’s not a darling of the left at the moment, right?)

I don’t get it, other than the opportunity to mention his name (psssttt Buuusssshhhh, Rooovvveeeeee....uh....jooooooooooooooos), what has Dick Cheney done in the Senate other than be Vice President, that has had an iota of effect on the Senate?

The same Senate that the Democrats have been running since 2006? THAT Senate?

Oh my.

She’s smart, cultivated, serious and unpretentious.

All the things that Dowd wishes she were. Toss in a pony, or unicorn. and she could run for office.

Yeah, I said run. Although I’m not sure if I’m talking about the NY Princess or the NYT Princess.

Heh where do you find these random nobody bloggers? Google & Wikipedia thinks Jennifer Rubin is an actress. Google also thinks the conservative JR is on "a site harmful to your computer" ROTFL. Dowd probably has 10,000x the readership.

TomD writes: "Dowd probably has 10,000x the readership." Oh, well, then, Dowd must be right, and we shouldn’t question her logic. A higher number of readers is clearly proof that one argument is superior to another.

After I wrote my post above, I had this image of TomD at the time of the American Revolution telling Washington, "I’m telling you, you should disband the troops to disband! I mean, who is this obscure upstart Paine anyway? Samuel Johnson is a famous writer, and his ’Taxation No Tyranny’* had ten times the readship of COMMON SENSE1"

*Tory screed arguing against the legitimacy of colonial discontent. I always think of instead of debasing the term "liberal," modern State-shtuppers should just call themselves "Wefare State Tories."

That’s how Democrats reason these days. They point out the number of people who agree with them.

Then they tell jokes about Bush’s stupidity and lack of curiosity, and clap themselves on the backs about how much smarter they are than Republicans.

Yeah, TomD has interesting ideas.

A writer (and by corollary, a reporter’s correctness) is measured by the volume of their readers (or viewers) measured against the general population who has access their writings (or, I meant, broadcasts).

Shoot, Baghdad Bob had a world wide audience, measured in the millions, no, maybe the 10s of millions!!!!

How could the guy have been so wrong?

Any ideas how that could happen there Tommy?

Google & Wikipedia thinks Jennifer Rubin is an actress.
My wife had an uncle named Bill Murray. He wasn’t an actor. What’s your point?
Dowd probably has 10,000x the readership.
And I’m sure 10,000 times as many Americans watched Laverne and Shirley as read Don Quixote. So Laverne and Shirley must be better literature, right?

Well she’s 10,000x a lot of thigns and very few of them very notable or claim worthy

And Limbaugh has millions of listeners. Means nothing.
...who is this obscure upstart Paine anyway? Samuel Johnson is a famous writer, and his ’Taxation No Tyranny’* had ten times the readship of COMMON SENSE1"
So Jennifer Rubin = Thomas Paine!?!? Possible, but unlikely.

Dowd coos:
Then Rubin squawks. Both sound like a bunch of annoying birds to me.
Like Rummy "skewered" Lehrer?
Maybe. I guess we’ll see how it plays out.

Do you really think I was saying Rubin equals Paine, Pogue? Are you always that dense when faced with satire? In my scenario, I was simply pointing out the fallacy of . . . oh, never mind. If you gotta explain ’em. . . .

It just occurred to me that if Pogue were watching SEINFELD, and in a discussion between Jerry and George about, say, Kramer having an argument with Newman, and Jerry used one of his famous SUPERMAN references and told George, "Well, that’s crazy! That’s like Superman getting angry with Batman. . . ." Pogue would write in, "Is Jerry really equating Kramer with Superman? I hardly think so!"

The Left is good at pretending: pretending to be dumb, pretending to be intelligent, pretending to have principles and especially pretending to not be on the Left.

That was purposeful. He was pushing your buttons. That is the only thing he does here.

pretending to have principles
principles get in the way of moral relativism so they can’t have those.

Classical liberals have principles, modern ones have ideologies. In that sense they are no different from hard core religious nuts. That is why so many find common cause with the islamists. They both hate the west.

Well, "the west" is just patriarchy and colonialism and every evil thing a proper PoMo can "deconstruct" it into. Besides, Islam is about poor brown people, and you don’t get any "cooler" than that.
