The Rosie O’Donnell "Bush is a War Criminal" Award
Posted by: McQ on Thursday, January 08, 2009

Well it's time to start the voting for the First Annual QandO Awards. And we'll do it a category at a time. Today, we'll begin with the Rosie O'Donnell "Bush is a war criminal" Award for the stupidest celebrity quote for 2008.

And the nominees are:

- Matt Damon remarking about the nomination of Sarah Palin as the Republican Vice Presidential candidate:
"Do the actuary tables and there’s a one out of three chance, if not more, that McCain doesn’t survive his first term and it’ll be President Palin... It’s like a really bad Disney movie. The hockey mom, you know, ’oh, I’m just a hockey mom’... and she’s facing down President Putin... It’s totally absurd... it’s a really terrifying possibility... I need to know if she really think that dinosaurs were here 4,000 years ago. I want to know that, I really do. Because she’s gonna have the nuclear codes."
- Robert Redford in a speech about the decision of the the Bush administration to auction leases to oil and gas companies for exploration on 132 parcels of land in Utah.
“In my mind, in my opinion, it’s morally criminal what they are attempting to do and the way they are doing it.”
- Rosanne Barr on, well it's obvious:
"Bad Mother Palin is blabbing about how her pregnant teenage daughter has made the right CHOICE!!! Well, first of all, Ms. Palin, I mean MRS. Palin, your slutty daughter wouldn't have a CHOICE to make at all, if you had your way!!! ...I can see that she gets off talking badly to Barack, and I am sure the "N" word is rollin around that empty head of hers somewhere."
- Stephen King giving his opinion on who you'll find in the military:
"I don't want to sound like an ad, a public service ad on TV, but the fact is if you can read, you can walk into a job later on. If you don't, then you've got, the Army, Iraq, I don't know, something like that. It's, it's not as bright. So, that's my little commercial for that."
- Joy Behar on the View discussing racism:
"[W]hen I was in college, I studied sociology. And what we learned is that racism is an institutional thing. It's not like, it's something that goes from the top down. In other words it's not something- if somebody is- you can't be racist if you're in the oppressed minority. It goes the other direction. The majority is racist to the oppressed minority."
- Ted Turner well, being Ted Turner:
"And the KGB, I think, was an honorable place to work. And it, it gave people in the former Soviet Union, a communist country, an opportunity to do something important and worthwhile."

I Like King’s writing most of the time but he still wins this one hands down for me. Maybe it’s because I’m in college on the MGIB and hear this sentiment expressed with some frequency, but this particular meme just...-really- gets under my skin.

I must say that most of those statements are just plain moronic and say more about the person saying them than anything else. Turner’s statement, however, borders on treasonous. The KGB as "honorable" and "worthwhile"? I guess juvenile delinquent droogs carrying out bolshy acts of ultra-violence in the name of the Glorious Soviet Motherland must be right horrorshow, eh Alex?

playing the devils advocate i can’t disagree with turner’s comment. If i were russian at the time i would consider the patriotic thing to do.

I would like to vote for Harry Reid’s "The war is lost" comment.

When asked this week if he was wrong, he refused to say.

Harry Reid should be tied up and dropped into Pakistan’s SWAT area naked, with a sign painted on his body: I DIDDLED ALLAH’S WIFE.

In Arabic.

Be patient, James - this is the celebrity category and we all know Harry Reid is no celebrity regardless of what he thinks of himself.

Turner got my vote just barely over King. King’s comment was offensive and thoughtless, but was more of the mask slipping (about what he really thinks about the military) than just outright stupid (although it was that too). Turner’s was offensive on so many levels, including the historical revisionism and outright propagandistic implications of his statement. King’s an a-hole, but Turner actively praised murders and oppressors as if they were simply trying to put food on their tables. If he had said that about the Gestapo, do you think anyone would still be asking him questions at all?

The rest was just mindless dreck (or "Mindles Dreck" for anyone who remembers that reference).

I voted for Damon because his ignorance so frustratingly spread through the general public. It felt like every other day I was running into some acquaintance who had deeply bought into the idea that Palin was a book banning bimbo.

My gosh, so many blithering idiots to choose from! I finally had to pick Roseanne Barr just because every time I read it I seemed to lose a few more brain cells.

In retrospect, Turner should head up a category all his own; The Walter Duranty Memorial "What genocidal dictatorship? I don’t see any genocidal dictatorship" award.

Yes, I stayed up all night pondering this one.

If you ever need to know how ignorant some people with a Liberal Arts degree (or is it a science?) can be, look no further than Joy Behar’s quote.

Although, maybe it isn’t so much ignorance as adherence to the conventional wisdom of her day. Institutionalized racism was killed by desegregation.

I was tempted to go with Turner’s comment, but instead chose Behar’s because it is, as she might put it, the most "structurally" incoherent and dangerous viewpoint and one that is promoted throughout the American education system.

Reid’s comment, not listed because it came in 2007, will win during the decade awards.

I find it hard to believe that Sean Penn and Tim Robbins took the year off, or at least don’t have an honorable mention somewhere.

That aside, I’m going with Joy Behar. What a jackass. A teenager could probably have explained it with more coherence and fewer ’like’s, if not even known better than to say something like that in the first place.

The other quotes, while obviously not well (if at all) thought out, I *think* I at least can see what the intended meaning was - King probably didn’t mean the military is full of illiterate retards, just that if you are in that position you don’t have too many choices. For Turner, yeah, ok, I read that the same as Mac (i.e. it would be considered honorable to those living in the Soviet Union). Robert Redford and Damon are always Douchebags, and it’s always a shame when celebrity status gives these people are a mouthpiece.

Considering that Damon takes Howard Zinn’s version of American history as holy writ, he has little room to complain about misconceptions regarding natural history.

After all, how many day-to-day decisions in the White House involve paleontology? (Other than when members of Congress come for a visit.)

Turner reveals himself as a sociopath. He’s not stupid enough to be ignorant of what the KGB has done, he just doesn’t care. He’s an evil man.

Wow. Some tough competitors here. I really hate to give any of them an award of any kind, even a worst of the worst type.

Hey Tommy, are you saying you CAN’T see Russian territory from Alaskan territory (with the naked eye).

Is that what you’re saying?

Or are you going with the "newspapers" quote?

Are you saying Russia isn’t Alaska’s neighbor?

As long as we’re having fun with facts, did you know that from some points in Alaska you can actually see tomorrow? Good that she didn’t mention that, twerps like you wouldn’t understand the humor.

Oh dear, I gave it away, now you’ll know you really can see Russia from Alaska.

Damon and Barr are raving morons, but their ignorant rants were directed at a single individual. Likewise Redford at a small group.

King, as has been mentioned, is brain damaged so I gave him a pass.

I agree with Mac and AE on Turner. As loathsome as the KGB was as an institution, doubtless there were good people who joined it for entirely patriotic reasons.

So, though it was a tight race, I went with Behar. Hers was such a blanket piece of idiocy — plus attempts to redefine words to get rid of inconvenient meanings just tick. me. off.
