I Like King’s writing most of the time but he still wins this one hands down for me. Maybe it’s because I’m in college on the MGIB and hear this sentiment expressed with some frequency, but this particular meme just...-really- gets under my skin. |

I must say that most of those statements are just plain moronic and say more about the person saying them than anything else. Turner’s statement, however, borders on treasonous. The KGB as "honorable" and "worthwhile"? Turner got my vote just barely over King. King’s comment was offensive and thoughtless, but was more of the mask slipping (about what he really thinks about the military) than just outright stupid (although it was that too). Turner’s was offensive on so many levels, including the historical revisionism and outright propagandistic implications of his statement. King’s an a-hole, but Turner actively praised murders and oppressors as if they were simply trying to put food on their tables. If he had said that about the Gestapo, do you think anyone would still be asking him questions at all?
The rest was just mindless dreck (or "Mindles Dreck" for anyone who remembers that reference). |

I was tempted to go with Turner’s comment, but instead chose Behar’s because it is, as she might put it, the most "structurally" incoherent and dangerous viewpoint and one that is promoted throughout the American education system.
Reid’s comment, not listed because it came in 2007, will win during the decade awards. |

I find it hard to believe that Sean Penn and Tim Robbins took the year off, or at least don’t have an honorable mention somewhere.
That aside, I’m going with Joy Behar. What a jackass. A teenager could probably have explained it with more coherence and fewer ’like’s, if not even known better than to say something like that in the first place.
The other quotes, while obviously not well (if at all) thought out, I *think* I at least can see what the intended meaning was - King probably didn’t mean the military is full of illiterate retards, just that if you are in that position you don’t have too many choices. For Turner, yeah, ok, I read that the same as Mac (i.e. it would be considered honorable to those living in the Soviet Union). Robert Redford and Damon are always Douchebags, and it’s always a shame when celebrity status gives these people are a mouthpiece. |

Damon and Barr are raving morons, but their ignorant rants were directed at a single individual. Likewise Redford at a small group.
King, as has been mentioned, is brain damaged so I gave him a pass.
I agree with Mac and AE on Turner. As loathsome as the KGB was as an institution, doubtless there were good people who joined it for entirely patriotic reasons.
So, though it was a tight race, I went with Behar. Hers was such a blanket piece of idiocy — plus attempts to redefine words to get rid of inconvenient meanings just tick. me. off. |
