I imagine that as the particulars get out, more will oppose the DEMS bill. Oops, I should say Lightworker’s bill.
Of course, getting the particulars out will be the sticky wicket. The NY Daily News for example, doesn’t have the time to parse the bill because they’re too busy running the real important news: a 32-page Michelle Obama supplement that they’re going to use to boost circulation (no conflict of interest there, right?) |

I am skeptical of the stimulus, as I think it could cause dollar devaluation and inflation/stagflation. But even more tax cuts in insane. It would be an effort to increase short term consumption and the ’something for nothing’ mentality of the hyperconsumerism of the past two and a half decades. The stimulus might work if it is real investment. But just giving people money and letting the market work leads to speculative bubbles and consumption without production. Faith in "the market" is clearly irrational. |

"Faith in "the market" is clearly irrational"
Right. Central planning is much more rational and effective, as history has shown. |

Scott Erb - But just giving people money and letting the market work leads to speculative bubbles and consumption without production. Faith in "the market" is clearly irrational.
Nothing is perfect in this world, and that includes the market. Why? Because people aren’t perfect: they can be stupid, greedy, mean, malicious, etc. They also make - even OFTEN make - bad decisions with money, like taking mortgages that they can’t afford, buying houses on coasts prone to hurricanes, investing in overvalued stockes, etc, etc. However, relying on the market has historically been a helluva lot more sensible than any other method tried. There are periods of pain, but they are outweighed by periods of good.
Or do you think that somebody else knows better than you how to spend your money? |

I have to disagree with Erb. Faith in government is far more irrational than faith in markets. This "not so much stimulus" is a fine example. Scott needs to remember, always, that politicians are interested in first, more power, and second, lining their pockets.
When, Erb complains about markets, he needs to remember that government is constantly manipulating markets. If the government had not been trying to manipulate the housing markets, we would never have had this debacle. Nor, would we have had the housing bubble that allowed the use of a home as an ATM. In almost every case, what is described as a failure of markets, is really a failure of government.
I would also point out to Erb, the crazy things government does. First, they bail out GM, then they tell GM what kind of car to build, and then they increase the mileage standards adding billions in new costs. Who, in their right mind, thinks government is anything but schizophrenic?

Echoing Rich Caird, the government’s track record these past several years hasn’t been very good. Consider:
9-11: Ooops. Missed that one completely.
Patriot Act: We’ve got to act IMMEDIATELY to protect the American people. Oh... You mean we didn’t consider all the ramifications? Ooops.
WMD: Well, the damned things USED to be there. Everybody said so.
ENRON: Missed the boat on that one.
Iraq invasion: Great idea! No, wait... terrible idea.
Housing bubble: Everybody should own a house, even people who by any normal standard can’t afford their mortgage. It’s the American Dream! Why, no! Freddy and Fanny are perfectly sound, why do you ask?
Bail-out: We’ve gotta give the banks billions to keep the economy going. Wait... What do you mean, they had a party and bought corporate jets and the economy is still tanking??? Didn’t see that one coming.
Social Security: It won’t go bankrupt until 2015 (or 2047, or 2012, or whenever), so why worry?
State budgets: Well, anybody can make an arithmetic mistake.
Yes, many of these things can plausibly be blamed on Bush... but they can with equal plausibility be blamed on BOTH parties in the Congress, and on various presidents going back to at least Carter.
So, tell me again: why in the hell should we trust the government to do the right thing on this "stimulus" package? It seems to me that the LEAST trustworthy player in this whole situation is the government. I suspect that many Americans have a gut instinct along these lines, and the more they think about the government passing out billions, the more uneasy they become about it.
Besides, haven’t we been told repeatedly over the past several years how BAD deficit spending and debt are? Didn’t the dems crow repeatedly about how their hero, Slick Willie, ran surpluses that were destroyed by the spendthrift Bush?
Schizophrenic... Or just massively dishonest? You be the judge. |

The liberals in the media must be asking themselves, "What is going on? Have we not elevated this man [President Numbnuts] to the status of a God? Have we not bestowed upon him the admiration, the love, the hopes and dreams of not just the American people but all of mankind? If so, why should any American oppose what he is doing? Is that fair? Is that even patriotic in this time of national crisis? Or is it...dare we say it...racist?"
I heard one "commentator" (re: loud mouth) say that when Rush told Hannity that is The Clown™ imposes socialism that "I hope the President fails," that "what Rush Limbaugh said was treason."
Yep, you heard it here, folks. A group of loons, who for eight years called the President a war criminal, a dopehead, a druggie, a child killer, a Hitler, and demanded that he be arrested, believes now that if you merely state that you wish to oppose the institution of socialism in this country and want such imposition to fail, it is treason.
Once more, plain evidence that liberalism is a serious mental disease, and any one who has it either needs help or should just be locked away. Because they are dangerous to all facets of human society. |
