Vice Admiral James Stockdale, R.I.P.
Posted by: Dale Franks on Tuesday, July 05, 2005

Vice Admiral James Stockdale has died at 81 years of age. In a life dedicated to the service of the United States, VADM Stockdale received 26 combat decorations, including the Medal of Honor. Speaking of which:
Rank and organization: Rear Admiral (then Captain), U.S. Navy. Place and date: Hoa Lo prison, Hanoi, North Vietnam, 4 September 1969. Entered service at: Abingdon, Ill. Born: 23 December 1923, Abingdon, Ill..

Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while senior naval officer in the Prisoner of War camps of North Vietnam. Recognized by his captors as the leader in the Prisoners' of War resistance to interrogation and in their refusal to participate in propaganda exploitation, Rear Adm. Stockdale was singled out for interrogation and attendant torture after he was detected in a covert communications attempt. Sensing the start of another purge, and aware that his earlier efforts at self-disfiguration to dissuade his captors from exploiting him for propaganda purposes had resulted in cruel and agonizing punishment, Rear Adm. Stockdale resolved to make himself a symbol of resistance regardless of personal sacrifice. He deliberately inflicted a near-mortal wound to his person in order to convince his captors of his willingness to give up his life rather than capitulate. He was subsequently discovered and revived by the North Vietnamese who, convinced of his indomitable spirit, abated in their employment of excessive harassment and torture toward all of the Prisoners of War. By his heroic action, at great peril to himself, he earned the everlasting gratitude of his fellow prisoners and of his country. Rear Adm. Stockdale's valiant leadership and extraordinary courage in a hostile environment sustain and enhance the finest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.
Rest in peace, Admiral. You certainly deserve it.

I’ve always detested Perot for throwing him into the VP debates at the last minute. That made the Admiral look bad and some of the news dweebs commented upon his possible inability to handle stress.

The fucking morons.

I am saddened, and we are less by his passing. He was a thoughtful, determined man who contributed unstintingly to his country’s defense and the ideas which defend her, as well as someone whom I looked to as a mentor in philosophy.

He will be much missed.

I was too young for Viet Nam, so I learned of Admiral Stockdale by reading IN LOVE AND WAR. I cried, I laughed and I applauded this Hero.

My heartfelt Thank You and God Bless You, to this man who fought so bravely to keep America Free.

Thank you, Admiral, for protecting the freedom
that we all enjoy and take for granted.

’Fearlessness is better than a faint heart for any man who puts his nose out of doors. The day of my death and the length of my life were fated long ago.’

I wish our country had just a few more like you.

I wish we all could forget the "Candidate Stockdale" fiasco.
Admiral Stockdale WAS NEVER EXPECTED TO ACTUALLY RUN IN THAT ELECTION! He was CHOSEN for that role. Let me explain...
My understanding is that Stockdale’s good friend Ross Perot asked Admiral Stockdale if he (Ross) would put his name down as his running mate on the initial registration form required for entering the election. I had been told at the time by close sources, that Admiral Stockdale was NOT considering the position. He was simply doing Ross a favor. Then when the Perot organization had it’s convention, Ross would choose his running mate.
Ross Perot’s family was attacked and he dropped out before the convention took place.
When the public outcry for Ross to run became too much to deny, Perot re-entered the race. Time for any convention, or VP candidate changes had passed and Admiral Stockdale just did the best he could.
This was a great man!
And by the way, his wife Sybil is certainly his equal. She too is a role model for us all!

At this moment, my parents are at the San Diego Memorial Service for Admiral Stockdale and I have been touched by everyone’s kind comments here. I wasn’t even born when Admiral Stockdale was first taken captive and was only a few years old when he was released but later in my life, I had the great honor of visiting with him on several occassions.

As many of you have mentioned, he exemplifies the true meaning of an American hero and I will always remember his sincerity and kindness. I remember in my younger years knowing that I was in the presence of a very important hero but he always made me feel at ease and was simply a sweet man. If you have never read his book, "In Love and War", try to do so. It is an incredible story that alternates chapters between his POW experiences and the experiences of his wife, Sybil, back in San Diego. Their story is one of great commitment not only to each other but to their fellow mankind. God bless them both and rest in eternal peace, Admiral Stockdale.

I had the honor of meeting Admiral Stockdale on April 15,1998 when he hosted an informal seminar at Bay books in Coronado California. I purchased his book "In Love and War" and I was very fortunate to have the Admiral and Mrs. Stockdale sign it for me. I’am retired military and will always treasure that book. Jim Stocdale is a roll model for me and a real life John Wayne.
