Miers: It gets worse
Posted by: Jon Henke on Wednesday, October 12, 2005

Just when you thought the Miers nomination couldn't get any more ridiculous......it does: "Harriet Miers' religious beliefs figured into her nomination to the Supreme Court". From a Whitehouse transcript:
People ask me why I picked Harriet Miers. They want to know Harriet Miers' background; they want to know as much as they possibly can before they form opinions. And part of Harriet Miers' life is her religion.
As John Cole writes, "oh, how the times have changed these past few months. It turns out that now, in fact, religion IS a partial qualification and that the religious views of a candidate are a material aspect of their fitness to serve."

Some 45 years ago, another JohnF. Kennedy warned us against this: "neither do I look with favor upon those who would work to subvert Article VI of the Constitution by requiring a religious test, even by indirection. For if they disagree with that safeguard, they should be openly working to repeal it."

But, hey, she might be a member of the religious right, but at least she's going to be good on economic matters, right? Well, no, it gets worse...
From the WSJ's "Political Diary" (sub. req'd): "[B]usiness may not be getting quite what the White House packagers are touting. . . . One White House source says the positions she took in staff meetings might surprise her business supporters. He said she leaned conservative on social questions and liberal on economic issues.
I threw up my hands in disgust at this Presidency a long time ago. With this nomination, I've given up any hope.

And if, in fact, Miers does turn out to be a social conservative/economic liberal? Then, the next time Brad DeLong writes "Impeach George W. Bush. Impeach him now." (roughly every 3rd post), I'm gonna tell him "Fine....whatya got?"

I used to like what the Republicans said about economics: small government, responsible fiscal policy, reasonable taxation. I think everyone realizes now they haven’t practiced what they preach.

I never did like many of their religious social conservative supporters. I can back some restrictions on abortion and I don’t have problems with public displays of religious symbols or any of that stuff, but being an evangelical is a qualification for the Supreme Court? Please.

One wonders, then, what will be said if, in fact, she turns out to be the opposite of your fear.

I would expect from many quarters, a stunned silence.

One White House source
Uh-huh.

Anonymous sources.... trustworthy?

Right.

Bithead: I’d certainly be in stunned silence. And not too proud to admit I was wrong.
