Harriet Miers: Denial before withdrawl?
Posted by: McQ on Friday, October 21, 2005

Interesting article in the Washington Times:
The White House has begun making contingency plans for the withdrawal of Harriet Miers as President Bush's choice to fill a seat on the Supreme Court, conservative sources said yesterday.

"White House senior staff are starting to ask outside people, saying, 'We're not discussing pulling out her nomination, but if we were to, do you have any advice as to how we should do it?' " a conservative Republican with ties to the White House told The Washington Times.
Of course the official word from the WH is "oh, no, not the case ..."
"Absolutely not true," White House spokesman Trent Duffy said.
Still ... there's a lot of smoke, so perhaps there's a little fire as well:
But the conservative political consultant said that he had received such a query from Sara Taylor, director of the Office of White House Political Affairs.

Miss Taylor denied making any such calls.
Of course she does.
A second Republican, who is the leader of a conservative interest group and has ties to the White House, confirmed that calls are being made to a select group of conservative activists who are not employed by the government.
But we have corroboration.

Reality, it appears, has finally dawned among denizens of the White House:
"The political people in the White House are very worried about how she will do in the hearings," the second conservative leader said. "I think they have finally awakened."
But then, again with Ms. Taylor:
Absolutely false," Miss Taylor said. "Some of these conspiracy theories have risen to a new level."
Uh huh ... reminds me of those NFL and MLB owners who say about their particular coach or manager, "he has the full backing and faith of the team and the ownership and anyone who says otherwise is simply wrong", right before they sack the poor schlub.

Maybe Harriet will do us all a favor and save us the embarrassment of watching what is sure to be a hideous confirmation hearing by withdrawing ... please? I mean you know it's not looking real smooth when the chairman of the committee you're to appear before (and a fellow Republican to boot) had a rather interesting message for her and one I'm sure he never thought he'd have to give a Supreme Court nominee:
Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, Pennsylvania Republican, said Miss Miers needs a "crash course" in constitutional law.
Wonderful.

No, no, no.

Right before he decides that he "needs to spend more time with the family."

Please please please, get rid of this pathetic offering. I guess the only question is...

What the hell was the White House thinking? The Roberts thing went so well. Why mix it up like this?

This is a slow-motion train wreck. I don’t know whether to laugh, cry, or throw up.

If she does not go down swinging for the fence, Bush might as well let the dems make the next selection.

Those Republican staffers made a big mistake leaking this. It’s going to have two effects. First, after the White House was forced to again deny that they’re considering dumping Miers, it’ll be even harder for them to do so. Second, they’re going to be far more reluctant to discuss the matter (or to discuss any other potential nominees) with anyone outside the White House. That’s not good. The individuals who leaked that conversation did serious harm to the anti-Miers cause.

"If she does not go down swinging for the fence, Bush might as well let the dems make the next selection."

Or he could explore the support for some one who would likely (relatively) be an overt strict constructionist, like Edith Clement; or, he could nominate someone who would likely (if an activist judge at all) would be activist in a pro-liberty fashion, like Janice Brown.

Either way, he’d go far towards giving the part of the party which takes the Constitution seriously a reason to go to polls.

If Miers is withdrawn, who will she be replaced with. I mean Bush had a goal in mind in picking her. She was partly an easy sell to Democrats. What other reasons there are, I don’t know. The only thing I can think of is that her close loyalty to Bush may have been part of it.

If another nominee comes up, maybe we’ll get a better picture.

I still think her failure was deliberate. Now Bush can say, "Hey, I tried!" and nominate Priscilla Owens.

It’s probably safe to say that if Miers goes down, the next nominee will breath fire and brimstone.

Yes, that’ll go down well...
"Hey, I tried to do something stupid. But everyone stopped me."
Brilliant!!
