Meanwhile on the Mexican border
Posted by: McQ on Sunday, November 20, 2005

Indicators of what many of us have been concerned about for quite some time as concerns border security:
An al-Qaida operative who was on the FBI's terrorist watch list was recently captured near the Mexican border, housed in a Texas jail and turned over to federal agents, Rep. John Culberson, R-Texas, said on Friday.

"A confirmed al-Qaida terrorist, an Iraqi national, was held in the Brewster County jail," Rep. Culberson told ABC Radio host Sean Hannity. "He was captured in Mexico. This was within the last six weeks. He was turned over to the FBI."

The Texas Republican said he obtained the stunning information about the terrorist's capture "from the sheriffs who were directly involved.

"In fact, one was the sheriff who incarcerated him in the Brewster County jail [and who] confirmed this as well," he explained. The same sheriff also confirmed "that this guy is on the FBI's al-Qaida list," he added.
But Granny still can't get on an airliner with her nail clippers.

Look, forget immigration. This is a plain old, vanilla security issue. If you can't secure your borders how can you keep the bad guys out?

Very simply, you can't. And we've known that since 9/11.

What have we really done about it? Well let's see, we've gotten a tremendous amount of lip service (like Chertoff declaring the days of "catch and release" are over ... for some reason that reminded me of Bill Clinton declaring the days of big government were over ... yeah, right.) and very, very little action.

Seems this and immigration are still key issues for enterprising politicians/parties interested in electoral victory. Of course that means you have to have a plan, and with each of the parties at the other's throat over Iraq and the President, the usual stuff falls through the cracks.

Like securing our borders.

OK, besides cost, what is the downside of a huge (impenetrable) fence with surveillance cameras every few miles? It would seem the cost of the fence will be easily paid for with the reduction in border officers and costs to state governments who deal with the illegal immigration problem.

Why is it some always answer "secure the border" with "how much will a fence cost".

Tell me, is a fence the only way to secure our border? How about technology and more border agents as well as building the facilities necessary to hold illegals caught while crossing?

Make it more costly to fail for the illegals. Right now it’s more of a game. Spend a month or two in a lockup until you’re properly deported and have to start over again and see how many are willing to play that game.

FOX has reported that the 101st was on the New Mexico border for two months backing up the Border Patrol. They nailed 20000 illegals. It is a start.
