Posted by: McQ on Sunday, November 20, 2005 Indicators of what many of us have been concerned about for quite some time as concerns border security: An al-Qaida operative who was on the FBI's terrorist watch list was recently captured near the Mexican border, housed in a Texas jail and turned over to federal agents, Rep. John Culberson, R-Texas, said on Friday.But Granny still can't get on an airliner with her nail clippers. Look, forget immigration. This is a plain old, vanilla security issue. If you can't secure your borders how can you keep the bad guys out? Very simply, you can't. And we've known that since 9/11. What have we really done about it? Well let's see, we've gotten a tremendous amount of lip service (like Chertoff declaring the days of "catch and release" are over ... for some reason that reminded me of Bill Clinton declaring the days of big government were over ... yeah, right.) and very, very little action. Seems this and immigration are still key issues for enterprising politicians/parties interested in electoral victory. Of course that means you have to have a plan, and with each of the parties at the other's throat over Iraq and the President, the usual stuff falls through the cracks. Like securing our borders. |
