So are you suggesting that Cheney didn’t practice gun safety? (just for clarification) |

Hagel is such a blow-hard. His jealousy of President Bush is akin to that of an ex-girlfriend about her competition. He doesn’t care what the issue, if he can embarrass the President, he will. I’m glad he will be the Joe Biden of the Republican Party—Life-time pretender to the Presidency. By the way—has he reneged on his term-limits pledge yet?? |

I thought the suggestion was that this was a lame cheap shot at the fact that Cheney was not in the military. Its almost like the politicians want voting francise to be more like it was in Starship Troopers. But of course we know they dont want that, and all these remarks about military service are just cheap shots. |

Since he shot his hunting companion, I thought that was a given. |

So are you suggesting that Cheney didn’t practice gun safety? Uh, no. I’m not suggesting anything other than one doesn’t have to be in the military to receive gun safety training and that what Hagel said was nothing more than a gratitous cheap shot. |

Oh, it’s coming... At least Hagel didn’t shoot him in the face. (oh, come on. I had to.)

What’s a given? That had he been in the military it wouldn’t have happened? No, that he wasn’t practicing good gun safety. Despite Mr. Whittington apologizing for getting in the way of the Veep’s birdshot, gun safety is usually missing when your hunting companion gets shot. |

Look, I know Hagel might be a political enemy, but that’s still no excuse to abandon simple logic and join the right-wing slime machine in attacking him. He said, in essence, if X then Y. He did not say only if X then Y (i.e. if Y then X) which is the only way the NRA’s viability as an alternative becomes relevant. Was it a bit of an easy shot to take? Maybe, but folks who blast away at helpless quailtards or "hunt" from moving vehicles sure know a bit about easy shots, and Dick "Go **** Yourself" Cheney obviously don’t believe in decorum. By what twisted priorities and double standards does Hagel’s lack of complete deference after Cheney shot his friend even show up on anyone’s moral radar? |

helpless quailtards Quail are helpless, which is one reason that they are prey.
Of course, if you’ve had a covey of the little bastards launch into the air about 2 feet away from you when you’re walking in the woods then you’d know one easy way to get a heart attack.
The fact that these were farm raised doesn’t mean that they’ll walk up to you and demand a handout. |

No, that he wasn’t practicing good gun safety. Yeah, I think that’s pretty obvious and the fact that he took responsibility for what happened speaks to that as well. So I’m not sure of your point.
My point was that Hagel had the option of shutting up about it all and didn’t (the smart choice in my opinion) and he compounded it by claiming something which isn’t true. |

Funny ... suddenly you are joining the "right-wing slime machine" if you take exception to something a right-wing pol says.
I’ll say it again: Hagle’s words were uncessary and ill-chosen and he should have just kept his mouth shut. If that aligns me with the "right-wing slime machine" in this case, so be it.He said, in essence, if X then Y. He did not say only if X then Y (i.e. if Y then X) which is the only way the NRA’s viability as an alternative becomes relevant. He said, exactly: "If he’d been in the military, he would have learned gun safety."
That implies it can be learned no where else. He’s wrong. It’s as simple as that. |

In my opinion, it was a shot at his lack of military service; gun safety was just an excuse. |

That implies absolutely nothing of the sort, McQ. Take a logic class. I have Platypus, which is precisely why I’m dismissing your comment as nonsense. There is indeed an implication and it doesn’t have to be qualified by an "only". The remark was specifically aimed at something entirely different than gun safety.
Timacutal has figured it out: In my opinion, it was a shot at his lack of military service; gun safety was just an excuse. Exactly. |

Well then, McQ, I’d say that if you looked and dressed just like me you’d have a brain. According to "McQ Logic" that means that you could only have a brain if those preconditions were met. Nonsense. Anyone who actually knows Thing One about real logic would laugh at your interpretation. You made a junior-high-level logic error, and now you’re just trying to bluster your way out of admitting it. "A implies B" is not the same as "not A implies not B" and anyone who taught that logic class you supposedly took would have failed you for insisting otherwise.
The original remark was a shot at Cheney’s lack of military service, but it’s not the shot you think it was just as his shot in the field wasn’t the one he thought it was. You’re both way off target, and handling it about as well. |

If it’s not the shot I think it is, what shot is it, pray tell? |
