I am no fan of Katie but I have seen her on the Today Show....but I don’t recall her having a big rack like in the picture on the left. |

Oh, for the days of a news anchor as ugly as Chet Huntley.
This was done on the line between news and entertainment. The photos are from a CBS magazine about what they’re showing. So no one will get fired, and since it’s pretty trivial, perhaps no one should be.
But it’s indicative of a "news" culture that wants to shape reality to their ends. Hey, Couric didn’t get chosen because of her scintillating intellect and powers of analysis. She got chosen because CBS thinks her looks and persona will bring in viewers. So let’s just spice up the looks a bit, eh? No worse than slapping on some makeup. At least that’s how the CBS folks probably view this.
What these folks don’t seem to get is that the water torture of their fakery has consequences. Why trust organizations that promote or even condone such a malleable concept of reality?
None of them really want to face up to the responsibility of just reporting news. Reuters "fired" their stringer, who was responsible for some 900 photos, but made no announced changes in how they work with stringers. That means the same guy could be sending in pictures right now through an intermediary who gets a cut. No consequences.
Memogate got one firing, but Rather still gets his prime-time sendoff, and Mapes got a book deal and plenty of opportunities to tell millions of people how the memos are not really fakes, and the right wing is just out to get her. Nothing like this hypothetical.
And thus the line gets continually blurred between reality and illusion. Since, to many of the post-modernist-sympathizing folks doing it, reality is a questionable concept anyway, they don’t really see anything wrong with that.
And, if Mapes is any guide, they are genuinely puzzled about why the rest of us do. |

Anent the issue of gaming reality, check out this brief story in the Boston Globe about the poor soul [I should say meteorologist] at MIT who insists on telling the truth about global warming. Heh....saw this floating around in a couple places:
How can you tell who someone’s god is? You look to see whose name they invoke as the cause of all things, good or bad. By that standard, the god of the devout Left is Global Warming; here is the Psalm of Al, from which the faithful constantly quote (King James Version):
1. Great storms ravage our cities, and the wise man saith: Global Warming hath done this.
2. Drought keepeth all storms at bay, and the wise man saith: This also hath Global Warming done.
3. Global Warming maketh the oceans rise; it maketh deep snow to fall;
4. Flood and fire, feast and famine, typhoon and tornado, hail and lightning, all things good and bad that come from sky or sea, Global Warming hath made them all.
5. And when our homes are beneath the waves, we shall know that Global Warming in its wrath hath seen our sins.
6. For our vehicles that glut themselves on oil, for the trees we cut and land we clear,
7. For the cooling and heating of our houses, for the plowing and harvesting of our fields, we are punished.
8. Whenever we burn carbon and release it into the air, we shall know that Global Warming seeth it, and is wroth.
9. O man! Thou hast flouted the great god of the sky, and by three degrees of temperature we shall be burned,
10. For Global Warming is a jealous god, and small and annoying is man. |

There’s a pretty big difference between gussying up one’s brand and inventing news. Besides, the slenderized Katie is kinda hot.

Anyone else fed up with the assumption that skinnier is always and in every case better when it comes to the female form?

Anyone else fed up with the assumption that skinnier is always and in every case better when it comes to the female form? *raises hand* I am. Everyone’s tastes differ, of course, but how the tuberculosis-ridden-stalag-survivor look ever took hold remains a mystery. It’s a matter of scientific fact that the attributes of the female form the male half our species are keyed to notice are pretty much fat. Really, really appealing fat (think Dolly Parton), but still, under the skin - mostly fat. Gymnasts are skinny and square shaped. Fashion models are skinny and stick shaped. Pin-up girls (antiquated term used to avoid auto-censor) have _curves_.

Let’s just say it appears she missed the whole d@mn point. OK, that is an impossibly awful soundbite — but if you think there is a "d@mn point" then maybe you’re the one with the perception problem. Yeah, OK, it’s funny because it’s CBS. I’ll pay that. But beyond that it’s not even remotely significant.
It’s not about any ’"news" culture’, either, because the people who put this magazine together aren’t in the news business. "Watch" is a CBS marketing exercise, not a news publication. To be honest I’d be more surprised if they hadn’t touched up a PR photo in a magazine like "Watch". |

I think her reaction should have been ’they should NOT have altered the photo’. Take a stance. News rag or not, she’s the ’face’ of CBS news now. Passing the fabrication off with ’there more to love’ misses the point that it is a LIE. So no, I don’t think I have a perception problem. |
