Posted by: McQ on Monday, January 22, 2007 Hillary Clinton made her first appearance since her announcement about entering the Presidential race for '08. A New York Times story said Clinton appeared at a New York health center to outline her plan for "legislation that would significantly expand federal health insurance for Americans under age 18." What I found more interesting were these two paragraphs: The visit to Ryan/Chelsea-Clinton Community Health Center, which is just blocks west of Broadway (and is named after two neighborhoods it serves), was highly scripted political theater.Rare admissions in my experience. Obviously everyone does it and we should expect to see more and more of it. But it does make the point, doesn't it, that these folks are as much actor as anything? Every word, every pose, every event, every smile and every act is scripted and calculated for maximum positive exposure and impact. It gets to the point where you don't know what is real and what is manufactured for your consumption. Hillary Clinton, too, is much less likely to show up at events or functions which aren't "highly scripted political theater" ... probably more so than any other candidate in the announced field at this point. It'll be interesting to see if the press attempts to take advantage of less scripted and guarded moments to get a glimpse of the "real Hillary". She's been quite successful in the past at allowing only the manufactured Hillary to be seen. Will she continue to be able to set the agenda and essentially get a pass, or do you believe the press will go after her like they do most other candidates? Oh, and Joe Klein is upset that's all she had to say about healthcare. |
