When Reality Pierces the Facade

Regardless of your politics, this video is pretty funny.

It's generating a lot of attention. Some believe that Hillary is probably making a joke at Bill's expense.

I doubt that. I think Hillary was moving right along on auto-pilot, doing standard politician-speak. Politicians are trained to have a facade when speaking, because of the way the press treats everything they say. The pols prefer their material scripted, and completely devoid of certain subjects. There's a reason for the cynical definition of a gaffe - "when a politician accidentally tells the truth".

I don't think she was aiming anything at Bill. I think she was doing her "vast right-wing conspiracy is always out to get me" routine. But then she realized she had just said something that could be interpreted in more than one way. And rather than get herself tangled up talking about something she never, ever wants to talk about, namely Bill's bad side, she just went with the flow and let humor defuse the situation.

As a professional speaker, I'm impressed. It's very easy to let yourself get flustered when something like that happens. A key ability for avoiding that problem is to let people laugh a bit at your expense. I didn't think Hillary had it in her, but it seems she does.

I think she should have completly gone with it, it was amusing and wins points on both sides. It likely wont win any brownie points at home, but politically it would be good if she were talking about bill. It marginalizes him and puts herself in teh forefront. As youve been writing about, Bill is a big problem for her. Perhaps this was...dare i say? Intentional?

She’s not prepared to destroy Bill’s legacy just yet, she needs it.
She was referring to someone else, preferably someone she won’t have to actually define ("good manners forbids", "my mother told me if you can’t say something nice...", etc, etc, etc, etc)

Hey, if she can’t handle a cheating hubby, how can she be expected to deal with a guy who wants to kill Americans? It is a legit question.

She was referring to someone else, preferably someone she won’t have to actually define ("good manners forbids", "my mother told me if you can’t say something nice...", etc, etc, etc, etc)

I’m sure it’s a Republican though...

Despite what Allah says, I think it’s pretty clear the audience is thinking of Bill, and that she recognizes that they’re thinking of Bill. Otherwise, it’s just not that funny. If it’s Bush or Starr or some other Republican, why is that so funny? And why is it funny in the way that makes her lower the mike like she realizes she just goofed? No, it’s Bill all the way.

And it was funny.

I’m guessing it was funny because it occurred to everyone at the same instant - Hillary included - that what she said could have been about Bill.

I don’t think she was, I don’t like her much, but she’s way to smart for that, unless she was just completely out to lunch at that instant and we’re seeing
the woman behind the curtain. I think she’s too good at what she does for that.

The only way the Dems possibly lose in 2008 is if they nominate Hillary Clinton. And don’t give me any of this Obama or Edwards nonsense. The election is Al Gore’s to lose.
