So, the governor was warning us that the National Guard might not be able to handle an additional disaster? How thoughtful of her.
Next thing she’ll do is go on national tv telling us all that if a 5-mile wide meteorite obliterated all of the state, the Kansas Natonal Guard wouldn’t be have the equipment it needed to respond because of the war in Iraq. |

Hmmm...so Obama couldn’t get the death toll correct (probably someone on his staff gave him the wrong info), you’d think that a guy who loves to criticize Busg over his intelligence failure with WMD would bother to be sure he gets HIS facts right...
Reactionary idiot. |

Well, maybe they could handle 1 additional disaster, or maybe 2, but somewhere down the road enough disasters could occur that they wouldn’t have enough stuff to handle them!
Gee, ya think? And of course, that’s ONLY because they’ve sent men and equipment to Iraq!
And Obama - errrrrr....yeah......nice round number, 10,000. I like it when disasters occur and the death toll is in nice round numbers. His credibility rating, skyrocketing. |

Nice job trying to swiftboat Obamba. Sorry wingnuts, but you can be off a little in numbers and still point out that Bush failed the tornato vicims in Arkansas. |

Arkansas, Kansas, whatever. All those flyover states look the same. I am sure both states have desperate shortages of equipment. |

Well, Erbfan (just a note, not the best guy to try an emulate IMO)... The great thing about your use of the term "Swiftboating" is that you used it correctly (as opposed to how the left uses it). False information (or, if you like, lies) are denounced handedly by actual facts...
He wasn’t "off by a little". He was off by nearly three orders of magnitude! 12 vs 10,000?? If that’s a "little off", I should get my grades changed for some college math classes...
As an aside, Obama is a city boy. I’m sure he just fails to understand that some places aren’t Chicago in population.
As for equipment shortages, most of the work right now is just bull dozer/backho work. The state of Kansas is LOUSY with that stuff. It’s a freaking FARM STATE for crying out loud. Withing 50 miles are enough flatbed trucks, heavy equipment, and pretty skilled operators to outfit any two armies. Forget the national guard, the CITIZENS can move this crap.
I was born in a town in KS not too unlike Greensburg. Wamego KS...
Nice lil place. If you ever go to catch a KSU game, I suggest sying in Wamego.
*sigh* I miss my home... |

I think Erbfan is a parody, but there are people out there who think that somehow the tornado is Bush’s fault and/or that Bush has failed the tornado victims. The former is just idiocy, but the latter would stick in the public’s mind. I’m just curious what the president is supposed to be doing that the governor shouldn’t do. |

And by the way, Bush didn’t fail the victims, he caused em. It was a test of the new Tornado add-on feature for the Natural Disaster machine they have in the basement of the White House.

Oh, you know - biting his lip and whimpering "I feel your pain," crying like a PMS-addled housewife, shaking his head in sorrow that the anger and incivility of right-wing talk radio has brought such devastation on Kansas - you know, all those wonderful rhetorical tricks that made the Syphilitic Hillbilly’s time in office such an unalloyed joy. |

Scott is right: the citizens (referring to the area as a whole) are quite capable of handling this themselves. In terms of recovering from tornadoes, it is quite common for neighboring communities to come together to help out without much support from the state let alone the federal government. There probably would have been more of that in this case, but less than 12 hours after the tornado hit, the Highway Patrol spokesman on the scene was asking volunteers NOT to come to help.
As a lifelong resident of Kansas, I find the use of this disaster for political gain not only confusing, but actually quite insulting. Most Kansans (at least the ones not in the bigger cities) are not whiny little crybabies who need (or even want) the governement to do everything for them.
Maybe Obama should learn that people in some parts of this country take pride in being self-reliant and tend to frown on playing up victimhood. |

Obama quickly corrected himself as was noted in the original AP article. Which of course you won’t see here on this site, you’ll have to click thru.
He was correct that 60% of the KS Nat’l Guard’s equipment is in Iraq. Governor Sebelius is also correct in stating that if another major catastrophe were to occur in Kansas right now - like major flooding - her local State Guard Commander would be asking her to make a choice of which disaster to respond to. This is something governors have been complaining about since the Iraq War started.
She was pretty shrewd to call attention to it right away. She now has Fran Townsend and Michael Chertoff at her beck and call. |

As pointed out here, her claim was quickly debunked by DoD although much of the left blogsophere immediately bought into it. So has the new York Times. Today’s e-mail edition is still quoting the origional statement. No mention of the clairfication or DoD statement. |

Of course, ’lil Bammy used the excuse that he was "tired", and that he hadn’t had his juice box or nappy-nap.Governor Sebelius is also correct in stating that if another major catastrophe were to occur in Kansas right now - like major flooding - her local State Guard Commander would be asking her to make a choice of which disaster to respond to She could respond to both since she could request Natl Guard help from any neighboring states.

Nonsense:Under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, which is a national partnership agreement that allows state-to-state assistance during governor or federally declared emergencies, Kansas has more than 400,000 Guardsmen available to it. |

Governor Sebelius is also correct in stating that if another major catastrophe were to occur in Kansas right now - like major flooding - her local State Guard Commander would be asking her to make a choice of which disaster to respond to ... So if another small town of 1,500 in Kansas were destroyed, they would be incapable of responding without all that missing equipment???
That tells me there’s something wrong with that state and it’s governor.
And, with all due respect and condolences to those in Greensburg, but a town 1,500 being destroyed is a "major catastrophe" for the state of Kansas???
It certainly was a major catastrophe for those involved. Just as the tornado’s that hit small communities in Indiana are catastrophe’s for those communities. But they are hardly ever major catastrophes for the state. Unless some critical infrastructure or business were hit, the impact on the state is going to be minimal. |
