Posted by: McQ on Monday, May 14, 2007 The other day, on BlogTalk Radio, Dale and I were talking about the MPAA movie standards which were going to include smoking now as a part of their rating system. We certainly had mixed feelings, but since they're a private association, hey, that's their privilege. During the discussion we mentioned the fact that while sometimes these sorts of things are driven by consumers, many times they also come as a result of subtle and not so subtle pressure from government. Well, hold on to your belt lines, a new attempt is being ginned up in Congress and they think it is their place, again, to tell you what is or isn't proper to watch: Hollywood has been under increasing pressure to take steps to ease the purported effect of entertainment content in several areas, from smoking to child obesity. Next week on Capitol Hill, the Senate Commerce Committee begins its examination of the effect violent content has on children.Again, the broken record repeats: Not. Your. Job. Or said another way, find another boondoggle to waste our money on like, oh I don't know, having the CIA focus on global warming? As the article reminds us: "(P)arents are very clear to us that they — not the industry and certainly not the government — should determine what is appropriate viewing for their kids," Glickman said Thursday. "What they want is information, and that is the action we are now taking."Got that, Congress? |
