The indictment handed up in federal court in Alexandria., Va., Monday is more than an inch thick and list 16 alleged violations of federal law that could keep Jefferson in prison for up to 200 years. Not that he WOULD go to prison...
But he COULD... |

From his bio:
"Jefferson is an active and senior member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee and its subcommittee on Trade. He is also a member of the House Committee on the Budget."
You’ll notice it doesn’t say he’s chairman of the Ways and Means Committee or the House Committee on the Budget. You know why that is? Because last year when the FBI raided hs office Pelosi stripped him of his leadership positions. The Democratic party did their best to oust him in the primary and general elections in Louisiana but the people of New Orleans don’t much trust outsiders telling them who to elect I guess.
Contrast that with Denny Hastert’s shrieking over the raid on Jefferson’s office and his years’ long cover up of Mark Foley’s scandals. And how about Boehner appointing Ken Calvert to the Appropriations’ Committee when John Doolittle had to step down pending his indictment? Turns out the FBI is delving into Calvert’s records too. Jerry Lewis, House Appropriations ranking member is not long for congress either.
If you’re keeping score at home don’t bother. When it comes to corrupt polticians these days, the Republican party has almost cornered the market.

When it comes to corrupt polticians these days, the Republican party has almost cornered the market. Cornered? Not quite sparky. You can find plenty of corruption on both sides of the aisle.Because last year when the FBI raided hs office Pelosi stripped him of his leadership positions. So I take it you agree with McQ that she should now kick his indicted A$$ off the committee entirely. |

As I am writing this Pelosi announced her disappointment but no call for his resignation. Why am I not surprised. |

The Democratic party did it’s best to oust him in the primary and run off elections last year. Contrast that with Repub leadership, Rove included, telling Mark Foley he wasn’t resigning his seat to become a fatcat lobbyist in 2006. They desparately needed him to hold that sear for another cycle.
Ok let’s keep score. Jefferson is a loser with zero power in Pelosi’s congress.
Congress.Org Jefferson’s Power Rank Standings
Power Ranking: 439 Power Score: -2.50 Rank in Chamber: 439 Rank in State: 7 Rank in Party: 237 Rank in Class of 1990: 19 Past Power Rankings 2005 Rankings: 412 2006 Rankings: 436
Make that less than 0. Man he’s last in the party and the entire House chamber! This guy not only has less clout than any Democrat or Republican but with a -2.50 power rating he could probably cause your bill to spontaneously burst into flames by glancing approvingly at it!
Compare that to 4th ranking Repub Jerry Lewis Power Rank Standings
Power Ranking: 118 Power Score: 19.53 Rank in Chamber: 118 Rank in State: 19 Rank in Party: 4 Rank in Class of 1978: 1
Lewis is probably going to retire next year before he’s indicted in connection with the Duke Cunningham - DOD investigation. Like the disgraced traitor Duke - and that’s what people who bilk the national security apparatus of the US ought to be considered - Lewis is going to find out that resigning doesn’t make much difference to honest feds (but who knows how many of those are left in Gonzalez’s DOJ?) when it comes to felony charges.
And yet there sits Lewis as the highest ranking minority member on the Appropriations Committee. 4th most powerful Repub and 118th most powerful member in the House.
Why doesn’t Boehner force him to step down? LOL, have you seen the Republican House caucus? Who is he going to put up? Replacing Jesse James with Billy the Kid isn’t going to curb crime in Dodge City.

Replacing Jesse James with Billy the Kid isn’t going to curb crime in Dodge City. Replacing Jefferson with another Democratic Huckster won’t reduce Crime in Congress either.
We have the best politicians money can buy, too bad they are on sale at such incredibly low prices. |

Wanna play? Let’s compare the number of earmarks since Repubs took congress in 1994 to before then. How about the number of House reps under investigation on both sides? C’mon ya wanna?
Believe me, you 30% deadenders don’t want those facts anymore than you want to discuss all those painted schoolhouses in Iraq these days. |

Mark, three questions... Are you going by gross totals (if so that’s rather unfair - 13 years vs less than one), are you adjusting for inflation, and are you going by total per year, or are you willing to break it down by party (Dem earmarks vs Repub earmarks)?
I’m just wondering... I’m sure this would be a fun game to play... |

Mark G8,
Comparing Jefferson to Foley is a bit unfair...best to compare Duke Cunningham with Jefferson (crimes of money) with Foley and Studds (gay intern sex) |

No Scott I’m saying compare the number of earmarks from the last 13 years under Repubs to the 13 years before that under Dems.
"Best to compare Duke Cunningham with Jefferson." You really want to do that Harum? The Dukestir made about $2.4 million trading his office for junk he forced the government to buy. He received the longest sentence in congressional history. Only 8+ years. Not nearly long enough. Will Jefferson pass him? Who knows.
You can see the details here:
http://tpmmuckraker.com/cunningham.php
Jefferson is alleged to have used his office as basically a foreign sales office for various companies and tried to sucked cash out of both ends of the deal. I can tell ya as long time salesman that’s unethical and stupid. I was hoping to find some cut rate ExAm bank funding or something he sweetened the deal with that I could get really pissed about but didn’t get that far if it’s in there.
What Jefferson allegedly did kinda looks like what Bush Sr. spent 1992 doing instead of winning reelection. There was an article a long time ago in Mother Jones I think it was that showed all the giveaways to oil cos, regulations swept away, long term contracts signed etc. that made me realize the old fart wasn’t just squandering his last year in office fumbling away his job he was actually living up to his campaign promises to the people that really mattered.
Reading about half of Jefferson’s indictment it sounds exactly like what most of these clowns usually do AFTER they retire from public service. It’s all influence peddling, self dealing and other various scams. Google Poppy Bush and Frank Carlucci at the Carlyle Group. It’s the kind of thing they do for a living these days except it’s usually peddling guns and oil field stuff with happy little government subsidies and loans only available to insiders and members of the club instead of cellphone towers like Jefferson. And they usually have the decency, if you wanna call it that, to wait til after they’ve retired.

Gerry Studds, Gerry Studds. Why don’t I remember much about that sex-with-a-17-year-old scandal from 1973? Oh yeah, President Nixon was hogging up all the headlines with his criminal conspiracies in 1973. Do you really want to talk about the scandals of 1973? |

Given Retief’s logic, none of the Republican misdoings from 1995-2000 should count, since a certain President was engaged in illegal acts at the time. |
